Good Shepherd Ministries Volunteers!Here are some very helpful ways you can help the clinic meet patients’ dental needs, without dental or medical license, knowledge, or experience:Interact with patients:Converse with waiting patientsOrganize a prayer teamPray with patientsPray for patients—see prayer box, ask staff and medical/dental volunteers to contribute patient prayer requests (without naming names of course: HIPAA)Bring water bottles or other comfort items to offer to patients… restroom comfort items too?Make next day follow-up calls to extraction patients: use a script for Spanish languageJoin the prayer circle Monday and Wednesday mornings at 8:27 in the clinic front roomSit in waiting area and wait. What can be done to make the room better/more professional/more comfortable? Then do that. Organize a fundraiser:Using the Good Shepherd Amazon Shopping List, host a party and invite friends to purchase items from the list. These are all items we use in the clinic.Invite a staff member to speak at your worship service or event. We love to share our mission!Host a birthday fundraiser. You can do this on Facebook or just invite family and friends to donate to Good Shepherd instead of buying presents.Promote Good Shepherd:Social media post of yourself and friends volunteering at Good Shepherd (no patient names/faces/identifying information)Take photos of staff and other volunteersServe as ambassador for Good Shepherd Ministries, inviting friends and family to the clinic and giving them toursSupport Medical/Dental volunteersCreate a “mentor a student” program (church members mentor a student volunteer: invite to church, lunch, meet them at Good Shepherd to do a project together, etc…?)Write thank you notes to medical/dental volunteersPray for medical/dental volunteers (including soliciting prayer requests from volunteers)Write notes of encouragement to students during finals and other testingOrganize an appreciation eventBring snacks or dinner to kitchen during evening clinic or other events. Or make them here (kitchen is fantastic). Or be a host for snacks in kitchen for patients too. Host a Clinic Session: One person (or team with a leader) to serve as evening clinic host for weekly evening clinics (perhaps once/month per host team). Suggestions for clinic hosting: Open doors and greet all patients and volunteersProvide refreshment (anything from offering a cup of water to waiting patients to cooking and serving an entire healthy meal utilizing our kitchen facilities or bringing/ordering in for all patients, families, and volunteers)Provide activities/books/coloring books/encouraging magazines for waiting patients and their familiesCheck in and pray with and/or for patients, volunteers, and staff: How are you tonight? How may I pray for you tonight? Letting patients and volunteers know about prayer box for written requests and chapel for quiet time.Check restrooms to make sure they are stocked throughout the evening.Provide music in the waiting area and dental clinic (recorded for dental clinic, live or recorded for waiting area)Open doors and watch or walk patients and volunteers outAdopt An Event: Get a group together and adopt a Good Shepherd Event. That can include one or more of the following tasks: Volunteer for the event committee to help us planProvide volunteers necessary during the eventCollect and provide raffle items. Great prizes help us raise more money at events!Invite your friends to participate! We hold events to raise money AND awareness. You can help us by making your network aware of Good Shepherd.Volunteer to write thank-you notes to donors, sponsors, and attendees after the municationWrite personal thank you notes to donors. Personal notes are a great way to let our donors know how important their gift is to Good Shepherd!Share Good Shepherd posts on social media. You can widen the network of people who know about us which is essential to our mission!Write thank you notes to staff and volunteers.SpiritualPray daily for Good Shepherd. Pray for staff, volunteers, patients, donors, and the work of our clinic.Let your church mission team know about Good Shepherd. Invite staff to speak in your church. Did you know that the fourth Sunday after Easter is Good Shepherd Sunday? Good Shepherd Ministries Dental Volunteers, We Love You!Here are some very helpful ways you can help the clinic meet patients’ dental needs: Dental Assistant Permit required:Sterilize and bag instruments as neededRun instruments through autoclaveMake treatment traysClean and re-barrier rooms as neededNo Dental Assistant Permit required:Consider being the one half day per week person for PAP (pharmacy) (~one year commitment one half day/week)Interact with patients:Bring patients to dental chairCheck patient’s blood pressureConverse with waiting patientsOrganize a prayer teamPray with patientsPray for patientsTranslateInteract with dentists and dental students:Shadow exams and treatmentAct as runners for dentists and dental assistantsPatient and self education: learn these, then present to patients: Etiology, process, prevention, and treatment of cariesEtiology, process, prevention, and treatment of periodontal diseasePost-extraction instructionsLearn one Spanish phrase and use it as often as you can. Do this each day you are here, adding one phrase each day. Review THE BOOK of clinic protocols and instructions (blue three ring binder)Organize/restock the clinic:Restock room suppliesRestock drawers in roomsRestock cabinets in between rooms (paper towels, cups, gloves, soap dispensers)Fill water bottles in rooms as neededPut clean instruments awayPeriodically check Statim sterilizer water bottles (they need to be emptied throughout the day)Light cleaning/tidying/reorganizing to make things cleaner/prettier/more streamlinedMake hygiene take home bags: toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, flossers, coupon.Make post-op bags: 2 gauze packs and one post-op instructions in ziploc, separate Spanish and EnglishUpdate calendar dates in pano roomClean out and organize the drawers under the workstationTidy the lab; deep clean the labMake things look pretty (licenses, old pictures, etc)Inventory everything (work with Emma to break this down)Sit in each dental chair and look around.
