Unit 1

Introduction to materials, processes and skills in art, design and media

Level: 1

Credit Value: 6

Unit Aim:

This unit will provide you with an introduction to the materials and processes used in art, design and media, and the skills necessary to record and express ideas.

Subject Aim:

It is said that “The Face Is the Window to the Soul”.

In this short project you will experiment with many 2D and 3D materials, processes and technical skills, to create a series of experimental art works based on the human face.

Face & Form

For this exercise there will be no finished artwork to presentation standard, but you will experiment with many 2D and 3D techniques in representing the human face. These will be recorded, visually and in writing, in your sketch book. You may base your work on your own face, and/or someone you know, and/or a generic, anonymous face.

Subjects:

Drawing – Janna Cooper

You will explore a range of experimental drawing techniques using a variety of drawing and painting materials and working from images of different faces, including your own.

You will look at how different artists create images of faces, using these ideas to try out different drawing techniques experimenting with ink, graphite, charcoal, pastel and paint. Once you have completed a series of drawings you will use these images to create collages and mono-prints.

You will also annotate your artwork and describe methods you have used, your ideas behind you work and how you could develop these further in your sketchbook.

3D – Paul Whyte

You will experimental with 2d materials to identify ways of creating form from shape. We will identify the differences between form and shape.

The head will be seen as 3d, and many people may accept the face as being flat (2d). However, the detail of the face is very complex and not flat as you will discover. You will be asked to construct the basic form of the head, using constructivist methods and 2d imagery illustrating head & facial features.

You will have produced a sculptural piece, like the image produced by the sculptor Naum Gabo. Use the images of head and face features to aid you in this task. Use these images in your sculpted piece. Present your final piece with test piece you have made.

Photography / Mixed Media – Catharine Frediani

We will use digital and analogue photography methods and process to explore the theme of the face through portraits and self-portraits. We will compare portraits made from natural light and studio light. We will also look at how the portrait is used as art and how it is used in society. Once we have produced a series of portraits we will create a series of abstract and literal images using traditional and digital methods. We will look at photographers who have developed work based on this theme as inspiration. We will annotate our own work to discuss the methods and processes we used and also to express our ideas and intentions. Our work from this project will be presented and annotated in sketchbooks.

At the end of the project you must submit the following work:

Several collages, using magazine and newspaper cuttings, found images, objects etc.

A series of 2D Drawings, experimenting with as many tools, techniques, and processes as possible.

A series of mono-prints, experimenting with mark making techniques.

A 3D experimental model, using paper/card to created 3d form. These should be photographed for your sketchbook.

Annotation and analysis of work in your sketchbook, recording how you have selected and compared materials, used technical skills, explaining the

meaning of your drawings, images and objects.
