GETTING TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR

CLELIA KIRSENLOHR, AKA CLEO

In April, Cleo turned 94 years old. It was a long journey from Livorno, Italy

to Adams, but for the love of her husband she moved to Coloma, Wisconsin.

She grew up with her two sisters and two brothers in Sicily, until the family

slowly moved to Livorno when she was a young teen. The family did not have

a lot of money and times were tough under Mussolini. Food was scarce, but

as World War II ramped up things got worse. Cleo remembers many people

getting killed, including her father when a bomb hit their home after he refused

to go to an underground safe spot.

She is conflicted when she talks about the war, because she feels the war

was the worst part of her life, but it also set her up for a lot of joy. Many of the

young Italian women had jobs in factories and warehouses and this is how Cleo met her husband,

George. He was an American soldier stationed in Italy and one of the many jobs he had was to pick up

the young ladies and drive them to work. This is when Cleo caught his eye and we can imagine the

rest! They were married and Nicola, named after Cleo¡¯s father, was born in Italy.

About six months after their son was born, Cleo moved to the United States. She remembers

spending 10 days in New York and being in awe of the Statue of Liberty. George was from the

Coloma area and he and Cleo moved to the family farm in 1948. They had two more children, Diane

and George. They moved into Adams and bought their home when George took a new job.

She admits that her greatest accomplishment has been raising her children and maintaining a close

relationship with them. She is now a great-great grandmother and likes to be called ¡®NONA¡¯.

Her husband, George, passed away in 1970 and she never thought

about moving back to Italy. She has returned to Italy to visit her family over

the years and loves when they mail her Italian newspapers. While in Italy

she rode a bike, but had to quickly learn how to drive a car after her

husband passed. She enjoyed working at the Charleston Cafe and Red

Owl. With support and encouragement from family and friends she became

a US Citizen and voted for the first time in March of 1996.

She credits her longevity to the ¡°Good Lord!¡±. Her sister recently

passed away at 102 years old in Rome, and her brother, Nino Scicolone, in

France is 96. Her cousin, Sofia Villani Scicolone, AKA Sophia Loren, is still

acting at 86 years old! She eats well and tries to remain active and social,

but must have coffee with milk first thing in the morning to get her going.

Cleo is a regular at the Community Center and enjoys getting out and

visiting with people. COVID has been really difficult on her because she

has been isolated in her home and she can¡¯t wait to get out again. She loves when Diane comes and

helps her with her long hair and brings her great-great granddaughter to visit.

Cleo feels better when she can dress up in her best outfits. Knowing Cleo, her hair and make up

always need to be in place and she is rarely seen otherwise. She also never forgets to freshen up her

red lipstick after lunch! One of her favorite things is high heels and hats and she would dress up for

church every week. She wears St. Christopher around her neck, but has recently added a life alert

necklace to it. She would like to put it on a prettier necklace, but feels it is important to wear it at all

times in case she needs help. Cleo is looking forward to the Community Center opening and then

I bet she will be encouraging others to wear one.
