Today, more than 370 refuges are open to the public for hunting and/or fishing across the country. Here in the Midwest, national wildlife refuges and waterfowl production areas are a huge part of this tradition. We welcome sportswomen and men of all backgrounds and abilities to experience hunting and fishing in amazing places. Here are some proposed additions for public hunting and fishing on National Wildlife Refuge System lands.Green Bay National Wildlife Refuge is proposing to update the refuge’s hunting and fishing programs and is seeking public comment on the changes. The last updates to the Green Bay National Wildlife Refuge hunting and fishing programs took place during the writing of the refuge Comprehensive Conservation Plan in 2012.The proposed changes include: Open to deer hunting on Plum Island and refuge owned parcel of Detroit IslandOpen to fishing from the shoreline on Plum IslandYou are invited to review draft documents related to these changes, including the Draft Hunting or Fishing Plan, Draft Environmental Assessments, and Draft Compatibility Determinations. The documents are available beginning May 1, 2019 for 30 days. There will be an open house meeting Wednesday, May 8, 2019, from 6:00 PM through 8:00 PM on Washington Island, WI at the Rutledge Room 910 Main Rd. Washington Island, WI 54246. This is an opportunity to discuss the proposed changes with refuge staff and to provide your comments on the draft plans. Draft documents are available on the Green Bay National Wildlife Refuge website at the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge Complex Office, W4279 Headquarters Rd. Mayville, WI 53050.
