Facilities Management Pre-Apprenticeship Training Overview

The purpose of class is to attract and train individuals to assume future positions as Facilities Management Professionals, in partnership with International Facilities Management Association (IFMA) member organizations. The training will incorporate the International Facilities Management Training Curricula as preparation for student participation in an IFMA Apprenticeship program.

Prior to entering the training, prospective participants will be interviewed by IFMA Training Committee members and participating business to assess career suitability, interest, and aptitude and to connect him or her to an internship site.

Candidates invited to undergo this suitability assessment are generally mid-career professionals with a background in personnel, resource, or project management, or who possess hard skills in either the trades or IT. All candidates have expressed a keen interest in expanding and repurposing the scope of their knowledge and experience into a systems management position.

The Pre-Apprentice Training is divided into two learning components, a classroom portion and the on-the-job internship.

The initial classroom portion (35 hours over one week) is designed to give the participants the knowledge and certifications to be safe on the job site, as well as provide an overview of the industry and some basic understanding of the personal qualities and specific skills needed to be successful on the job. The classroom portion of the training will take place at the Anne Arundel County Career Center at 613 Global Way in Linthicum Heights, Maryland.

Topics to be covered in the classroom portion of the pre-apprentice training include:

OSHA 10 (to include associated certification)

First Aid (to include associated certification)

CPR (to include associated certification)

Fundamentals of FM (certificate)

FM Regulations

Customer Service Skills

Security Concerns

Project Management

Americans with Disabilities Act

Blue Prints and Schematics

The classroom portion of the training will be followed by 3 weeks of on-the-job learning in a Facilities Management environment within an IFMA member organization.

An ideal on-the-job learning environment for a participant is one that that is committed to attracting and training new professionals within the industry. Ideally the organization is also seeking new FM professionals and may be willing to consider the trainee as a future member of the company's FM staff. The environment will both challenge the client to learn new skills, and maximize his or her abilities in a way that is mutually beneficial to both the company and the intern. Job shadowing, and small project planning/execution, are just 2 examples of effective internship teaching methodologies that can be considered as a portion of the training program.

Upon completion of the classroom and pre-apprentice internship, successful participants may then be brought back into the classroom to provide feedback on their specific internship experience, complete training reports, and undertake additional FM learning components, before entering employment and apprenticeship training.

It is hoped that in addition to gaining valuable experience during the internship, the participant will gain insight into his or her own career options, ambitions, as well as industry contacts, job references, and current job opportunities.

The interns will earn a stipend which will be presented to them at the end of each week of the internship. The stipend will be equivalent to an hourly pay rate of $10.00-$12.00 per hour. The sponsoring business may opt to reimburse AAWDC for up to 50% of the total. If the company wishes to reimburse AAWDC, an invoice will be sent to the company at the end of the program cycle. A Master Agreement created in advance of the internship will detail liability and any other concerns on behalf of the business entity. A training plan will be developed with the business to identify training outcomes.

We sincerely appreciate your willingness to consider participation in the program.
