LESSON PLAN
Topic: Factoring
Name: Nicole Branstrom
Class: Algebra II
Grade Level: 11
Major Concepts:
Students should be able to look at bi- and trinomials and factor them using a variety of methods. They should then be able to solve for x.
Performance Objective / Content Standards:
4.0 Students factor polynomials representing the difference of squares, perfect square trinomials, and the sum and difference of two cubes.
Materials and Equipment:
computers, paper, pencils, erasers, graphing calculators
Independent practice / Assignments:
Problems will be assigned from the textbook. The students can do the odd-numbered problems (with answers in the back of the book) for extra practice, and the even numbered problems (without answers) for homework to be corrected.
Outline of Lesson:
1. The students will solve a number of linear algebraic problems for x. These problems will be copied from the board into their notebooks for reference and practice.
2. Today’s lesson shows how to solve for x when you have equations with x to a power greater than one.
3. Look at pg. 100 for the unit on Factoring. We will run through all of the examples on the board.
4. I will navigate the two sites below to show the students different methods of factoring and to explain to them how online tutorials can be utilized for additional practice.
5. Essentially, we solve for x to a power greater than one by translating it into something we know. We need to make it into an equation where x is raised to the first power by FACTORING and solve for x as usual.
Homework:
1. Check out the website below for tips on factoring and extra practice.
2. Reread the unit on factoring.
3. Problems 1-20, even, on page 110.
