Violent Video Games.docx

Kelly de LeonMrs. AllisonPeriod 3January 6, 2014Two WorldsWould you be able to tell what is real and what is not? There are differences between the real world and the virtual world, so we need to learn their boundaries. People dispute that the world of video games is influencing our actions in life, and they claim playing can lead to real violence. However, video games aren’t truly to blame for the madness. The gaming world is an escape from reality. This escape is something that we should be able to have and if not it would go against our freedoms to express ourselves. “Nothing is ever just one thing. It’s always a combination of things.”(Kim Hone, Avid Weekly) Stories lie behind everyone's actions and people are only pointing their fingers at videos games because they want the blame to be on games. There is no hard evidence behind the accusations showing that it is truly the cause for inappropriate behavior. Violent video games should not solely be blamed on the actions that society makes, because it is not the reason behind all the cruelty in this world. Some people say that video games are an escape from reality, the real world. No one has the authority to take games away because that would violate our rights that we have as people. We are allowed to pursue life, liberty, and happiness. Games are meant for entertainment and fun, not for creating an evildoer. Video games allow people to vent out their emotions in virtual world instead of the real world. For instance, you are angry then you can “kill” virtual avatars that are just codes and numbers instead of killing someone in real life with flesh and blood. It can help you express your emotions more rather than keeping it bottled up inside until you explode. Everyone has their limits as of how much pain they can take. Reality can be overwhelming for some so having an escape can decrease stress, depression, and is proven to act like a pain relief that keeps you happy even at an old age. Gaming would not hurt anyone because games are meant for fun and enjoyment not to create a mass murderer. This also brings up our next topic of us blaming things on others when we afraid of facing the real truth. For instance, parents want to blame video games for the violent behaviors of their child or children. It is a parents’ responsibility to discipline their child, that includes choosing the games that they play. Parents need to teach their children right from wrong and the real world versus fantasy. The guardians of young gamers do not seem to take enough time to teach their children these, and when it is too late they do not want to face the truth that they were partially at fault. The act of being more violent is also the result of your surroundings. To illustrate, imagine someone being raised within a community of murderers and gangs, compared to someone being brought up in peaceful community such as near a church. Which one would you believe to be more violent and hostile? When you look more into the case of The Sandy Hook Shooting, in which they blame Adam Lanza’s addiction to “Call of Duty", you can find other factors that could have contributed to his reason of action. Adam had a mental issue and was bullied at that same school in the past which could have been why he went on that rampage. Other murderers who actively played videos also had some sort of mental issue. Our choices in life are usually based on some sort of reasoning, our life is a cause and effect. In some cases, such as having mental issues,we tend to make mistakes and do not think and just act. Even if they did not show any signs of an issue what real evidence is there? There truly are not any hard fact to prove violent behaviors are linked to video games. . All these claims and accusations are just there with no real reasoning behind their words. People only say this when there is only a small percentage of gamers that turn to violent ways, and it is blowing the whole thing out of proportion. Many studies that try proving video games to real life violence suffer many design flaws and do not have any reliable evaluations to their tests that they ran. On the other hand, studies show that games can benefit one's reaction speed and can benefit their health. Reports have shown that in the United States that when violent video game popularity increased there was a decrease in juvenile crimes. With this, one can conclude that there is truly no connection between world violence and the games we play. Without any hard evidence blaming violent video games for the murders of some video game addicts is not right. Until real evidence pops up we have rights that protect our freedoms of playing games like these. Yet there is an arguing side that debates against all odds.Violent video games are stated to cause and influence gamers to become more violent in the real world. Some serial killers have actually been addicted to some of these violent video games, and have said that they use these games to learn from them and apply them to real life killings. Despite this, the real reason they are going on killing sprees is not the fact that they play video game, and to truly be able to apply virtual skills to the real world would take a lot more research. Video games are not the only source. Studies show that the percentage of those who show interest in violent video games is less than those who show interest in things such as violent movies and violent books. When research does display that games cause more aggression it is only short-term, meaning the child would not just leave their house to go commit murder. Cases about parents that have children playing these kind of games have stated their kids started to act more hostile to them, although parents should be taking charge to discipline their kids making it partially their fault. If violent video games were to be taken away from us so be it. Violence would not stop just because they are taking them away making it meaningless, pointless.Violence is something we do on our own accord. We are able to choose our path in life but we tend to be influenced by others. Nevertheless, that does not mean that video games should be blamed. Sure maybe video games can influence one to act more hostile but that is not the point. It is not these games fault it is society. To be criticizing games you would also have to blame other factors that could cause us to become more hostile like television, media, and practically all of the human race. Games like these are for us to create our own little world to escape the madness of this world. We need to stop blaming other things for our own faults and if we want to create a better society we would have to change our own habits. Stop blaming games and just face the facts that violent video games are not the cause of the cruelty in this world. Is there even a possible way to save our worlds and rid it of all its violence?
