Juniors/Seniors interested in attending Tri Star next year are encouraged to attend their Open House on January 11. Maps are available in the guidance office.

Prom/Homecoming Dress Exchanges: Several area groups are hosting a prom dress exchange for anyone wishing to sell a prom dress (or accessories), or to purchase a used dress. CASH ONLY!!

Underclassmen: Registration for the 2016-17 school year will be starting in early February. It’s never too early to start thinking about your classes for next year!

Students planning to take English Composition (senior class), Advanced Biology & Genetics (formerly AP Bio), Anatomy/Physiology, or Computer Apps next year should register to take the ACT this spring (or summer). A test score is required to become eligible for the college credit that FRHS offers for these courses.

Financial Aid

Junior and Senior Parents-- FRHS will host a Financial Aid Night on Monday January 25, 2016 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the Community Room. This presentation will be very helpful in explaining the financial aid process for college.

Seniors need to get an FSA ID (formerly FAFSA PIN) at fsaID

• This is one of the things you will need in order to apply for federal financial aid for college—so keep it in a safe place.

• You will need 2 IDs total: 1 student ID and 1 parent ID (parents use the same ID for all children)

Attention parents of college-bound seniors: If possible, try to file your 2015 tax forms before February 15, 2016. This is the FAFSA deadline for many Ohio colleges. (If you are unable to file by this date, don’t worry—you can estimate your AGI, etc. on the FAFSA and revise those numbers later.)

FAFSA: All seniors planning to attend college this fall should file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid):

1. Go online and obtain your FSA ID (see above)

2. Fill out the 2016-17 FAFSA on the Web Worksheet any time after January 1st (you will need tax info.). You can print a hard copy by going to and typing “fafsa on the web worksheet” in the search box.

3. File your FAFSA online at: prior to February 15. There is a NEW enhanced feature called “IRS Data Match” that will save you a lot of time after your taxes have been filed—it pre-populates many of the field on the FAFSA.

4. Paper FAFSA’s (for students without internet access) can be obtained by calling 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243).

5. If you have extenuating circumstances that will affect your family income in the next year (job loss, death of a parent, possible homelessness, etc.), discuss it with a financial aid counselor at your college! They can work to re-assess your financial aid award.

Summer Opportunities

The Joyce Ivy Foundation Summer Scholars program is available to female high-achieving students who will be entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade in Fall 2016. The mission of the foundation is to encourage young females to attend Ivy League colleges (Harvard, Princeton, etc.) Information on how to apply can be found at and are due March 1.

Planning a senior trip? You may want to avoid Saturday, June 18, 2016. That is the date of the FR Alumni Association’s annual banquet. All seniors are invited to attend, and if you are lucky enough to win an Alumni Scholarship, your attendance at the banquet is required.

Buckeye Boys/Girls State Applications are now available! 

These week-long summer camps are sponsored by our American Legion Post, and there is NO COST for students chosen to attend. Delegates learn more about City, County and State Government in one week than they will learn in an entire semester of high school. Boys/Girls State gives candidates proven leadership skills and looks good on college/scholarship applications( Mrs. Kaiser has applications and informational brochures for any interested students.

• Boys State will be June 12-19, 2016 at Bowling Green State University (applications due February 1)

• Girls State will be held June 12-18, 2016 at the University of Mount Union (applications due January 15)

Did you know…

WSU-Lake Campus offers “Skills Track Training” in their Business and Industry Center?

There is a need in our area for skilled manufacturing positions, and WSU-LC now offers a 2-year degree (Associate of Technical Study) in Advanced Manufacturing.  This is a lucrative opportunity for interested students and adults!

Vocational:

1. See the scholarship near the end of this newsletter. Scholarships are available for several certifications at vocational schools.

2. There is a need for skilled labor positions (construction, pipe fitting, sheet metal, electricians, ironworkers, HVAC, heavy equipment operators/engineers, cement and masonry, etc.). See Mrs. Kaiser for more information on Apprenticeship Programs and how to earn a Journeyman’s Card.

3. Manufacturing Careers are in high demand in our area. An increasing number of high-tech jobs are unfilled because the demand is so great. Electricians, Welders, Engineers, etc. are needed. Twenty-five percent of the workforce in West Central Ohio is in manufacturing. The median wage for skilled trades/manufacturing is $50,000 per year.

4. Apollo Career Center (Lima) offers many adult-education classes and certification programs in skilled trades. Call Doug Durliat at 419.995.8353 if you would like more information.

College:

1. Seniors planning to attend college or a trade school should have already applied!

• Watch your deadlines!

• ASK if there is a separate financial aid / scholarship application (you should try to get as many scholarships and grants as possible)

• Let Mrs. Kaiser know when you have completed/submitted your application so she can mail your transcript to the university.

2. Most FRHS students have HS credits that will transfer to college!

• Students enrolled in English Composition (& Literature), Adv. Biology & Genetics, and Computer Apps need to request a transcript from Rhodes State (after they graduate) to take with them to college. All of these classes should transfer, but you need to advocate for yourself!

• Articulated Credit: We currently have articulation agreements with some area colleges (WSU Lake, UNOH, for example) for FRHS courses in Accounting, PLTW, Ag, Tri-Star, etc. You need to ASK your college advisor if you can articulate any of your HS credits to college! This can SAVE you TIME and MONEY.

• FRHS students can take an AP Exam (sign up is in March) to try to earn college credits. If you are taking an AP course, I strongly encourage you to study hard, and take the test!! Be sure to ask your college admission counselor about earning these credits as well.

3. FRHS students who are applying to college should indicate that they are a new student (incoming freshman) regardless of PSEO/CC+ credits earned. You are NOT considered a transfer student.

4. Many colleges hold a President’s Day Open House in February. Check the postings outside the Guidance Office, visit the university’s website, or call for details. Here are just a few…

5. John Jay Center for Learning (affiliated with Ivy Tech State College and Indiana Wesleyan) in Portland, IN offers beginning-level college courses at a very reasonable cost Call 260-729-5525.

6. Ohio public college main campuses no longer offer developmental classes for students who don’t test into entry level courses. Those students will need to take their developmental classes at a regional campus or community colleges.

7. Prospective College Athletes who plan to play Division I or II sports must register with the appropriate clearinghouse. Both eligibility centers require that test scores (i.e. ACT) be sent directly from the testing agency. See Mrs. Kaiser if you need to register with either of these athletic clearinghouses because I need to mail your transcript to them! Cost is approximately $75.

8. Seniors interested in applying to Miami University:

• The fall 2016 Early Decision application deadline is November 15; Students should note that Early Decision is binding. Applicants must contractually agree to withdraw all applications to other colleges and attend Miami if accepted.

• The Early Action deadline for fall 2016 admission is December 1. Priority consideration for admission, merit scholarships, and selection for the University Academic Scholars Program, the University Honors Program, and other competitive admission programs will be given to students completing all application requirements by December 1, 2015.

• The Regular Decision deadline is February 1, 2016.

• Miami University Access Initiative: Miami University will provide FREE tuition and fees for all new first-year students from Ohio entering the Oxford campus that has family incomes of less than $35,000. The program will continue to provide tuition and fees for eligible students for up to four years.

9. Several Colleges offer FREE (or reduced) tuition for students who meet low income qualifications (like the Miami U Access Initiative). YOU need to ASK the college (or check their financial aid site) if they have such a program. Don’t be afraid to apply to your dream school!

Military:

Interested in joining the military after graduation?

• Joining the military can help fund your college education

• You need to take the ASVAB test to be considered for enlistment.

• Military recruiters visit FRHS (and homes) throughout the year. For additional information about a career in the military, visit .

Attention students in grades 9-11: If you are interested in applying for admission to a US Military Academy, start planning NOW. Academy Nomination Applications (US Air Force, Military, Naval and Merchant Marine Academies) are due in September or October of your senior year. It is a very prestigious honor to attend a military academy, and admission is highly competitive.

• Junior year is when the Academy application process truly begins. Students will start by filling out the Pre-Candidate Questionnaire, which becomes available online March 1 every year.

• Between March 1 of their junior year and December 31 of their senior year, students must also request nominations from a designated nomination category.

• See Mrs. Kaiser ASAP if you are interested in a US Military Academy.

Career Exploration/Job Shadowing:

1. Looking for a college or a career that’s right for you? There are several links on the HS Guidance Homepage that will be helpful:

a. OhioMeansJobs has a wealth of information about current job openings as well as occupation searches, wages, Ohio colleges, interest inventories, and much more! Website:

ii. Navigate using the Guided Tour

iii. #5-- College and Career Readiness Assessment & Training Center has college test preparation. (You don’t need to register, but if you do, it will save your results.)

iv. If you build a resume on the K-12 side, it is private. Save and post on the adult side () later.

2. Rhodes State students who would like to be considered for 2016 Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assisting, Physical Therapy Assisting, Radiographic Imaging (and other allied health majors) clinical entry should begin the selective admissions process this fall.  The deadline will be in February.  Information can be found at rhodesstate.edu/pta rhodesstate.edu/ota and rhodesstate.edu/rad    Students can certainly be admitted next fall, complete their general education and basic related courses and apply for 2017 clinical entry. 

3. Students interested in job shadowing at Mercer Health should contact the Education Coordinator at 419-678-5119 to request a job-shadowing packet. Be specific about the area(s) you are interested in (you can list more than one). Students are required to get a Tb test prior to shadowing.

4. The Mercer County Sherriff’s Office sponsors an “explorers program” for students interested in careers in law enforcement. Call Captain Mark Heinll at 419-586-7724 for more information.

4. Imagine America Scholarship for 2016 graduates: FRHS can select up to three students to receive this $1000 scholarship—FRHS will award this to the first 3 eligible students who apply each year. Only recent high school graduates who are qualified applicants and who meet the following recommended guidelines should apply: Likelihood of successful completion of postsecondary education, high school grade point average of 2.5 or greater, financial need, and demonstrated voluntary community service during the senior year Students must plan to attend a “career college” (such as Lincoln Tech or Kaplan) to be eligible. 5. Specialized Carriers & Rigging Foundation is offering $1000-$5000 grants to individuals looking to take a continuing education course (such as welding or diesel mechanics) or attend vocational/technical college. Apply online at . Grants are awarded throughout the year.

6. Sussle Scholarship ($500): Sussle is an encyclopedia of the things YOU care about. This is not your usual scholarship. There is no application or essay, and it's actually fun. By participating, you will be posting your knowledge for the benefit of others, and in return, the best contributor will win the scholarship. Eligibility: HS seniors and college students. See to enter. Deadlines: end of each month.

7. Zumper, a free apartment rental search site it sponsoring a $1,000 college scholarship. As a background on Zumper, here are their listings for Columbus: . They are looking for outstanding students who have helped their classmates or community in a tremendous way. Maybe you started a club that raised $10,000 for charity, or championed recycling and sustainable practices across campus. 8. 4-H Scholarships: Ohio 4-H offers a variety of scholarships to its members—most of these being for current year graduates and a few for members already attending college. 9. AXA Achievement and Community Scholarships: AXA is offering sizable scholarships (up to $25,000 each). Winners are known as AXA Achievers. They are students who set and reach ambitious goals; demonstrate drive, determination and ability to succeed in college and who have respect for self, family and community. . To learn more about the scholarship go to axa-. Apply early as only the first 10,000 applicants will be considered. Application deadlines are December 15 and February 1?, respectively

10. Rhodes State offers a variety of scholarships:

a. College Credit Plus (CC+)- $1000 for students who successfully complete a course at Rhodes their senior year. There are several FRHS students eligible for this award. Due January 15/May 1.

b. Tech Prep- $1000 for students in a Tech Prep program at Tri-Star. Due May 1.

c. Rhodes to Success- $1000 Academic Scholarship. 3.5 cum GPA and 24 ACT required. Due May 1.

d. Associates of Arts or Sciences; $1000 –Start your bachelor’s degree coursework at Rhodes and save money! Deadline is August 12, 2016.

11. Mercer County Elks is offering several scholarships. Visit for more information.

a. Elks National Foundation Legacy Awards: eligible applicants are: any child, grandchild, step-child, step-grandchild or legal ward of a living Elk who joined on or before April 1, 2013, or a charter member of a Lodge that was instituted on or after April 1, 2013. The Elk must be a paid member- up through March 31, 2016. Great-Grandchildren are not eligible. Scholarship awards are $4000. Applicants must take the ACT or SAT by December 31. The ENF Legacy Award Application is only available online at enf/scholars/legacy/rules.cfm and is due by noon on January 29.

b. Emergency Educational Grants are available to children of deceased or totally disabled Elks. Contact Jane Heiby at 419-925-4232 for more information.

12. John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest: Write an essay on an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1956. This is open to students in grades 9-12. More details can be found at . under the Education tab. Deadline is January 6.

13. GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship: for college-bound students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship. Recipients will each receive $40,000 in college scholarship funds. Additional information can be found at . Application deadline is January 7.

14. Students applying for scholarships at Bowling Green: top scholarships deadline is December 7 and all other Freshman scholarships are due January 15.

15. BGSU is offering scholarships ($4000-$5200 per year) to incoming freshman who are considering teaching secondary (or middle childhood) science or math (ACTION program). Applications can be found at bgsu.edu/action. Many other colleges have a similar program. All ACTION scholarship applications are due January 15.

16. Midwest Electric has a number of scholarships available. Applicant must be a son or daughter of a Midwest Electric customer. Scholarship forms are available in the guidance office or at under My Community.

• The General Scholarship (up to $36,000 or more) A minimum GPA of 3.5 is required. Personal interviews will be held in February 4.

• The Touchstone Energy Scholarship (up to 3000) will be awarded to a senior that reflects the Touchstone Energy core values of accountability, integrity, innovation and commitment to community, as well as their drive and dedication to achieving a college education despite any personal obstacles/special challenges they’ve faced. Minimum GPA of 2.75 is required. Personal interviews will be held in February 4.

After applying for either scholarship, students MUST provide Mrs. Wenning with a copy of the letter they receive stating their interview date and time to be excused from school. Completed applications must reach Midwest Electric by January 15.

17. Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarships ($1000-$5000) are available for senior interested in history, politics, or military service. Visit for more information. Deadline is January 15.

18. Engineers Foundation of Ohio is offering scholarships to seniors and current college students who desire careers in engineering. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA and ACT math=29, English =25. Brochures are available at: and applications can be found at . Due date is January 15.

19. OSU Alumni Scholars Program (Grade 12): Applicants must be ranked in the top 10% of graduating class, demonstrate involvement in community and school activities, and show a sound interest and positive attitude towards college work to be able to receive a one-time $600 scholarship (two scholarships will be awarded). Letters of recommendation can be attached to the application and are very important. Application and transcript must be returned by January 22.

20. Ohio JCI Senate is awarding academic and need-based scholarships, open to any major. Apply by January 30.

21. Northwest Region Ohio School board Association is offering $500 book grants to graduating seniors planning to major in education. Must have a 3.0 GPA to apply. Deadline is January 30.

22. Ball State University is taking application for its Miller Scholars program. The program is for incoming freshman interested in studying business. A recent FR grad received this award!! More information can be found at (search: Miller Scholars). Deadline to apply is January 31.

23. Playing with Purpose scholarships are available to current high school students in grades 10-12 with a “C” average or higher. You must be a current varsity athlete in at least 1 sport and be a committed Christian. Apply at by February 1.

24. Ohio Valley Associated Builders and Contractors Emerging Leaders Group is offering $1000 scholarships to students in grades 10-12 who plan to attend a post-high school program in a construction related field. Applications are due February 1.

25. Clarence & Ruth Rabe Memorial Scholarship ($500-Sponsored by the FR Chamber of Commerce): This is the first local scholarship for the class of 2016. Applications will be distributed in World History class and are also available online. Deadline is February 1.

26. eSchoolView is offering up to $5000 in scholarships for seniors majoring in graphic design, web design and/or web page development. Go on their Web site to find out more details: Applications due February 6.

27. Celina Insurance Group is offering a $1000 scholarship to a graduating senior who will be pursuing a 2 or 4 year degree in the insurance industry (Accounting, Actuarial Science, Business, Communications, Computer Science, Finance, Pre-Law, Risk Management, etc.) Applications due February 10.

28. Charles L. Warren Memorial Heritage Scholarship: No more than three applicants from one school will be considered for this scholarship. Students must have a 3.0 GPA or better and must also plan to attend and Ohio college or university. To be eligible students must demonstrate financial need (i.e. free or reduced or lunch or fee waivers).  Applications can be found at and are due February 12.

29. National Co-Op Scholarships are available to students entering a WACE partner college (University of Toledo and Cincinnati are examples) in the 2016-17 academic year. A recent FR graduate did receive one of these scholarships(. You must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 to apply. Visit or see Mrs. K for more information. Deadline is February 15.

30. Stolly Insurance Group’s SUCCEED Scholarships ($750 each): Seniors who plan to enroll in secondary education within the next year are eligible. Scholarships awarded for essay submissions received. Apply at  (click on Community) by February 19.

31. MED Foundation of Mercer Health Scholarship (grade 12): Mercer Health is offering scholarships to graduating seniors pursuing a career in the medical profession. The goal of the MED Foundation is to award one scholarship to each school in Mercer County. Applicants must have an ACT score of 25 or higher and other restrictions apply. Application is available online at  . and are due February 26.

32. Buick Achievers Scholarships are available to students who will be enrolling for full-time study at a 4-year college that plan to major in: science, technology, engineering, math, business administration, finance, marketing or design and are interested in a career in the automotive or related industries (see website for complete list). They will be awarding 50 renewable scholarships valued up to $25,000 per year! More information can be found at . Deadline is February 27.

33. Cooper Farms will award scholarships at each of its Ft. Recovery, St. Henry, Van Wert, and Oakwood facilities. This scholarship is open to all seniors, and will be awarded to students who have excelled in the classroom and have shown outstanding leadership attributes.  Special consideration will be afforded to those pursuing careers in agriculture as well as students of Cooper Farms team members. Applications must be submitted by February 29.

34. Technical Majors: Midmark Corporation is offering one Technical Scholarship to a graduating high school senior from Darke, Miami, Mercer, Auglaize and Shelby county school. 37. National Co-Op Scholarships are available to students entering a WACE partner college (University of Toledo and Cincinnati are examples) in the 2016-17 academic year. 38. William D. Squires Scholarships: The William D. Squires Scholarship is primarily need-based and is only for students from Ohio. 39. The Ohio Association of Career Colleges and Schools (in conjunction with the Ohio Legislature) is awarding over 200 scholarships to 2016 graduating seniors. 43. The Mercer County Civic Foundation has a small pool of student loan funds available to undergraduate students. These low-interest $900 college loans are renewable, and the 4% interest rate does not begin to accrue until 6 months after graduation from college, and are interest-free if repaid within that time. 44. Abbott & Fenner Business Consultants Scholarship: To apply for this $1,000 scholarship you will need to write an essay on the topic found on the website. The A&F Scholarships are available to all high school juniors and seniors as well as all students currently registered in any accredited post secondary institution who are between the ages of 16 and 30.
