Goal of Scholarship Program
To raise scholarship monies for children from low
income families in Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince
William Counties, who demonstrate academic
excellence and would otherwise not have an
opportunity to go to college
Scholarship monies to be determined after fund-raising activities.

Washington Dulles International Airport Rotary Club
History and Background
The club was formed during the period of July 1979 through February 1980. On the night of February 23 1980 the club charter was signed at Rotary International in Chicago. This coincided with the 75th Anniversary of the founding of Rotary. The club celebrated its 32nd anniversary on the 23rd of February 2012.
Since its inception, the club and its members have been involved in both local and international charitable activities. The members participate in international activities through the Rotary Foundation. Locally the club has supported needy organizations through our Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser, Christmas Bell Ringing for the Salivation Army, and the support of local charities on a case-by-case basis.

International Service
• Polio Plus program has virtually eradicated polio from the globe. Over 2 billion people have bee immunized.
• Ambassadorial Scholarships Program is the largest privately funded source of international scholarships with approximately 1,300 scholarships awarded annually.
• Group Studies Exchange: 568 Teams traveled to different countries in 1999-2000 with 8,000 total teams since 1965.

Object of Rotary
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
2. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life;
4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Student Requirements and Selection Criteria

Requirements:
1. Candidate must be a graduating senior in 2013.
2. Candidate must reside in and attend a Loudoun County Public Schools high school.
3. Candidate must be attending an in-state college or university for consideration for this scholarship.
4. Candidate must be a legal resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
5. Candidate must supply three letters of recommendation by a teacher in his/her related field.
6. Candidate must provide copy of transcript from his/her high school verifying grade point average. Grade point average must be 3.0 or higher.
7. Consideration will be given to a candidate who is first in his/her family to attend college but this is not mandatory.
8. Candidate must provide financial statement verifying financial need.
9. Candidates must disclose where they have applied for other scholarship and if they have received scholarships from other sources.
10. Candidates will be evaluated in the following order.
a. Need
b. Community Service
c. Grade Point average
11. Deadline for this scholarship is April 3, 2013. All information is to be turned into the Career Center of the School Counseling office.
Selection Criteria:
1. Demonstrated financial need. This is the Rotary’s most important criteria.
2. Demonstrated strong background in community service & helping others.
3. Demonstrated 3.0 Grade Point average or better.
4. Merits of the college program or curriculum sought.
5. Demonstrated ability and a sincere interest in the pursuing college degree.
6. Recommendations of teachers and guidance counselors.
Additional Information:
1. The Rotary plans to give two (2) - four (4) scholarships with the amount to be determined after fundraising events are finalized.
2. Applicants should show interest in community service and possible interest in Rotary.
3. Finalist will be asked to attend an interview for the selection committee to make their final recommendations.
4. Winners are expected to attend Rotary meetings to inform membership on their progress.
5. Winners will be expected to assist with scholarship fund-raiser.
6. It is the hope of the Dulles International Airport Rotary to entice students to learn about Rotary and Service Above Self. We know that getting financing for four years is always a challenge…especially in these times.
