Financial Aid Graduate Student Checklist

Once you have been accepted as a regular, degree seeking graduate student:

Be sure to activate your CMICH global ID as all communications will be directed to your CMU email. If you need assistance in activating your Global ID please call the help Desk at 989774-3662 for assistance.

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at

Make sure your social security number is on file via If requested by CMU, submit copies of federal tax returns and other requested forms and

documents to CMU's Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

Your Award

An award statement that outlines your aid eligibility will be emailed to you. First time borrowers must complete a Master Promissory Note and Entrance Counseling

Additional information about Graduate PLUS loans can be found here: (PLUS)_Loans.aspx Notify the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid of other financial assistance you will be receiving such as scholarships, employer reimbursements, military aid, and Graduate Assistantships. All additional aid can be added online through the Financial Aid Status Page under "Add Other Sources of Aid".

Eligibility

You must be enrolled at least half time (5 graduate credit hours) to be eligible for federal student loans.

Graduate students are limited to an annual maximum of $20,500 unsubsidized federal student loans and a cumulative maximum (including ungraduate loans) of $138,500. If you have reached either of these maximums you will need to apply for a graduate PLUS loan or a private student loan.

Stay enrolled! Withdrawing from classes could result in the loss of your aid and may affect future eligibility.

Complete your courses. You must make Satisfactory Academic Progress toward your degree to maintain eligibility for financial aid. Learn more about eligibility requirements under "Enrollment and Academic Requirements".
