FEDERAL CHANGES CREATE POTENTIAL PROBLEMS

CHANGES IN FEDERAL PRACTICE

EVEN GOOD CHANGES CAN CREATE BAD HEADACHES

? The Department of Education implemented the long awaited change to more readily available tax data. (Prior Prior Year)

? As a result of that the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) could be submitted at an earlier date.

? The Quality Assurance Program (QA) was ended

? This created a potentially large increase in the number of FAFSAs selected for verification

? Under QA we verified 1275 in 15-16 ? The Department had selected 5594 in 15-16

OTHER ISSUES

WE HAD SOME OTHER PROBLEMS WITH THE OLD PROCESS

? We request sensitive data from families ? Tax Returns ? Birth Certificates ? Social Security cards ? Etc.

? Many families scan and email these documents to us

? Others use Fax ? Unlike other offices, sometimes

students do read our emails.

? We reviewed several products that could help us streamline our process to take some of the manual effort out.

? We ended up purchasing StudentForms from Campus Logic ? Cloud Based ? Well Established ? All the features that we wanted

FROM THE STUDENT PERSPECTIVE A LOOK AT THE PORTAL

USING THE PORTAL

OLD VS. NEW

? In the past students would receive a notice from us that they were missing documents and then go to MyPurdue and see what they needed. They could click on the link (if they noticed it) and print out any required forms and instructions

? Once they did that they could complete the form, make a wet signature and either snail mail it, fax it, or scan it and attach it to an email.

? Under the new system, they just see a single link that says verification and they are taken to the new portal, which we call the Verification Portal.

? Once there they log in using the single sign on from Purdue and confirming some data from the FAFSA
