|Reading Mission: |Children to read or support them to read this short letter: |

|30 minutes | |

| |To Sarah, |

| | |

| |You’ll never believe what happened today! I was playing at the bottom of my garden, near the stream, |

| |and accidentally dropped one of my toy ponies into the water. The stream is very shallow, which meant |

| |it didn’t get very far, so I climbed down to get it. As I crouched down, I heard a rustling in the bush|

| |above me, and when I looked up I saw the most wonderful, amazing creature! Her hair was foxglove |

| |purple, and her eyes cornflower blue. She was only as tall as a large daisy, but her voice was a sweet |

| |as the scent of a rose in spring. |

| | |

| |In her tiny, chirping voice, she told me she was a flower fairy. I introduced myself too, and suddenly |

| |my head was full of questions! Uncertainly, I asked if she had a name, but she only smiled at me. As we|

| |talked by the bush, she hopped from leaf to leaf like a petal dancing in the wind. She explained that |

| |her job was to collect nectar from the flowers, so all of the other flower fairies could enjoy a |

| |wonderful feast at dinner. |

| | |

| |At the moment she mentioned dinner, my stomach started to gurgle. She giggled, but before I could ask |

| |another question my mum called from the kitchen that our food was ready. Hurriedly, I asked if I could |

| |see the fairy again tomorrow, and she bobbed her head in a nod before disappearing into the bush. |

| | |

| |On my way back to the house, I couldn’t wait to finish eating so I could write this letter to you! How |

| |are you doing? Do you have anything amazing to share? |

| | |

| |Love, |

| |Gemma |

| | |

| |After they can answer these questions, these can be verbal answers or they could be written down or |

| |typed. Children could even draw their responses. Suggested answers are in italics. |

| |Who is the letter from, and who is the letter to? |

| |The letter is from Gemma, to Sarah. |

| |How old do you think the writer is? |

| |Quite young, because she is playing with toys in the garden/mum is making her dinner. |

| |Why has the writer chosen “foxglove” and “cornflower” to describe the fairy? |

| |Because they are flowers and she is a flower fairy. |

| |How do you think the writer felt when they found the fairy? Use evidence from the text. |

| |The writer felt excited/thrilled/happy/curious because they were full of questions/wanted to know |

| |more/wanted to talk to the fairy/forgot all about their toy. (Or other reasonable answer). |

| |What kind of word is “accidentally”? (Hint: it is describing how she dropped the pony.) |

| |Accidentally is an adverb. |

| |Can you find three fronted adverbials in the text? |

| |As I crouched down/In her tiny, chirping voice/Uncertainly/As we talked by the bush/At the moment she |

| |mentioned dinner/Hurriedly/On my way back to the house. |

|Writing Mission: |Your mission today is to create a monster you might find at the bottom of your garden or in a nearby |

|30 minutes |park. The aim is to design and label your creature today, and write a letter tomorrow describing it to |

| |a friend. |

| | |

| |Think about: |

| |Size – this creature must be small enough to live in/around gardens |

| |How it stays hidden from most people – but not special people like you! |

| |How it looks, what noises it makes (it might not speak), how it smells |

| |What it might eat – remember it is small, so it might be grass, leaves, insects or fish |

| | |

| |If your child finds this tricky, you might use a phone or tablet to look up real life creatures and |

| |pick parts of them to build their creature with. |

| | |

| |Once you have drawn your creature, label it. Use a ruler (if you have one) to draw any label lines. |

| |Every label should be an expanded noun phrase (e.g. “long, scaly tail” or “ears which can hear the |

| |grass grow”). These should be used in the letter tomorrow. There are adjective word mats provided in |

| |the General Resources section. |

|Maths Mission: |A zorg monster has 7 legs. If there are 8 zorg monsters in a zonk park, how many legs would there be in|

|30 minutes |total? |

| |56 |

| |Each zorg leg has a foot with 9 toes. How many toes does one zorg have? |

| |63 |

| |If there are 2 zorgs in a zonk park, how many toes would there be? |

| |126 |

| |If there were 20 zorgs in a zonk park, how many toes would there be? |

| |1260 |

| |If there were 25 zorgs in a park, how many toes would there be? (Hint: 5 is a quarter of 20.) |

| |1260 / 4 = 315. 1260 + 315 = 1575 |

| |How many zorgs are in a zonk park that has 252 toes? |

| |4 |

| |A zorg has 100 toes, fingers, eyes and ears put together. How many different combinations of fingers, |

| |eyes, ears and toes could a zorg have? |

| |Any reasonable calculations that include 63 toes and adds up to 100. |

|Topic Mission: |By the end of this mission, children will have made their own worry monster. Worry monsters are |

|Day 1 |friendly monsters that nibble up worries and make them go away! |

| | |

| |Part 1 of this mission is to design and label a plan of their worry monster. Design criteria: the |

| |monster must be able to be placed in my bedroom, it must be able to take or listen to my worries (a |

| |hole or slot perhaps). |

| | |

| |Get children to consider these questions: |

| |What materials will I need to make it? |

| |What colours will I need and why have I chosen these colours? |

| |What shape could my monster be and why? |

| |How big or small will my monster be? |

| |How can I make my worry monster appealing to me? Will it be my favourite colour, funny looking or |

| |covered in my favourite things? |

| | |

| |Get children to draw or sketch out their worry monster on a piece of paper and label the parts of their|

| |worry monster considering the questions above. Some pictures below are just ideas! |

These Missions have been designed to be accessible, using little resources and most importantly fun for your children to complete. Please use what you can, any resources you do not have could be substituted for something else and suggestions have been made for this where possible.
