EDCI 519: Fall 2006

President’s Day Mid-term Project

Project Purpose

The purpose of this PowerPoint presentation is to offer teachers and English language learners (ELLs) the opportunity to integrate technology to facilitate learning in an interactive content-based classroom (Haley & Austin, 2004). When I created this PowerPoint presentation I decided to use it with a social studies unit about President’s Day. This PowerPoint presentation will allow teachers to help students improve their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills to help them acquire the English language. When teachers integrate technology into the curriculum it enhances learning the academic content for English language learners. I believe this PowerPoint presentation will promote literacy through integrating technology along with reading and listening, which will encourage students to read. This powerpoint presentation will allow students to negotiate meaning and build critical thinking skills.

This powerpoint presentation will allow teachers to teach across the curriculum, activate student’s prior knowledge through multicultural, global perspectives, and serve as a guide to help teachers and students learn new knowledge (Collier, 1995). I believe the simplicity of this powerpoint presentation will help teachers and students become proficient in computer skills, foster creativity, meet the national, local, and state standards, as well as meet the needs of culturally, linguistically, and cognitively diverse students. I believe the story format, question and answer format, and colorful clip art will engage all students with a variety of learning styles and multiple intelligences and keep them on task. It will allow teachers to guide students through the process of using technology to learn, communicate, and apply to their everyday lives. Overall, this PowerPoint presentation has given me the opportunity to ensure that the activities that I plan should be interactive and content-based and include language objectives to meet the needs of all students (Haley & Austin, 2004).

Target Learners:

The target learners will include students in the first grade that represent culturally, linguistically, and cognitively diverse backgrounds.

Content Area:

The content area is social studies.

Benjamin Franklin, and George Washington Carver.

• SOL 1.3: The students will study the lives of people associated with President’s

Day and Columbus Day.

How teachers can use the PowerPoint Presentation:

I recommend that teachers go through this PowerPoint presentation with the whole class in the computer lab. I recommend introducing the PowerPoint presentation after you have introduced the President’s Day unit so that students can activate their prior knowledge. Also explain to the students the kinds of activities they will be doing with these PowerPoint slides. Finally, I have included animations with this PowerPoint presentation, but you can change it to meet the students’ needs.

The PowerPoint presentation will have to be loaded onto the computers in the computer lab. Teachers should allow students to turn on the computer. Show students how to click on the file folder to retrieve the PowerPoint presentation entitled President’s Day. When all students have retrieved the PowerPoint successfully then you can view the slides together as a class.

To Proceed:

1. Slides 1 to 8 provide background information about George Washington and

Abraham Lincoln. Students can click with the mouse to move or just wait until after the animation.

2. Slide 9 will allow students to visit a virtual museum. Tell students to click on the hyperlink on the slide. Explain to the students that a hyperlink will allow them to navigate somewhere else. They are going to use the internet to visit a virtual museum. After visiting the museum, students need to click on the small red x located at the very top of the computer screen to return to the slides. You will need to help students with this part.

3. Slide 12 will allow students to print a coloring page by clicking on the hyperlink

on this slide. Students will click on Abraham Lincoln’s picture. Then the students will need to click on the names of George Washington (#1) and Abraham Lincoln (#16) to pull up the coloring pages. Click Print and Color. You can return to the slides again by flowing the procedure in #2 above.

4. Slide 15 hyperlinks to Slide 7 to allow students to review what they have learned about George Washington.

5. Slide 16 hyperlinks to Slide 8 to allow students to review what they have learned

about Abraham Lincoln.

6. Slide 17 hyperlinks to Slide 3 to allow students to review what they have learned

about President’s Day.

7. Slide 19 hyperlinks to the internet for students to listen to a story about Abraham

Lincoln.

8. Slides 10, 11, 13, 14, 18, and 20 have additional activities for you to use with the President’s Day PowerPoint.

9. Students can hit escape to leave the PowerPoint Presentation at any time.

10. When you are finished prepare to shutdown the computers for the next class by pressing start and clicking shutdown.

Overall, this project allowed me to experiment with using technology in a way that I have not used it before. Hopefully, this PowerPoint will help teachers engage students in meaningful, content-based, and interactive activities that help them become more proficient in the English language.
