Advancing sewing as an art and life skill
SEW SPECIAL...'19 WITH LINDA LEE
Linda Lee was inducted into the ASG Hall of Fame at the national convention in 2019. And, she is coming to Central Illinois in Peoria on October 11th and 12th, 2019. So, mark your calendars! You won't want to miss her workshop and Sew Special presentations.
Linda is well-known in the sewing world. She has the Sewing Workshop in Topeka, Kansas where she sells fabrics and teaches classes. Linda's training and experience in interior design has come in handy as she travels the country teaching the art of combining beautiful fabrics for the fashion conscious home seamstress.
Along with teaching fitting skills and sewing techniques, she designs patterns under the name of The Sewing Workshop. These patterns are for the modern seamstress who is interested in architecturally interesting styles that flatter with flare.
Along with five talented staff members, she operates out of her pattern making studio in Topeka, Kansas. There, you will find a huge inventory of fabrics which are sold online.
Linda produces a monthly series of inspirational tutorials called Sew Confident! In these, she breaks down the latest fashion trends into real life sewing experiences for people who want to sew better than they can buy.
She has nine Craftsy classes and thirteen books under her belt. She has the depth of experience and enthusiasm needed to pass on the fine art of sewing clothing to her students.
Linda's loves include cats, fashion labels Marni and Akris, Roger Federer, Fillmore Street in San Francisco, Oreo Blizzards and vintage hand stitching.
Linda's books include "Sewing Beautiful Pillows," "Scarves to Make," "Sewing Stylish Home Projects," "Sewing Edges and Corners," "Mastering Miters," "Sew Sensational Pillows," "Designer Home Sewing," "Sew Easy," "Sew Easy Bags" and "Sew Easy Scarves."
Her Friday workshop will include tips and techniques for sewing knits--including the ever-popular active wear. We will learn techniques and sew a sample to include in a sample swatch book to take home. Supplies include usual sewing supplies, sewing machine & serger. Can't bring a serger? No worries, we're sure we will be able to share. Also tips using a cover stitch will be discussed. There will be cover stitch machines at the workshop to observe. Bring a sack lunch and snack to share. Coffee and water will be provided.
Saturday's program will include a talk about Story Boards and their use. Linda will have a trunk show showing us garments that are made from her line of patterns and techniques she used to make them. Finally, she will talk about "Fine-tuning Our Sewing Skills." A Continental Breakfast and noon luncheon is included along with door prize drawing.
Please don't miss this event. It's a great way to learn new sewing skills, meet fellow sewing friends and spark your sewing interests. We know you will enjoy Linda. Mark your calendars now!

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Exciting possibilities are everywhere when one thinks outside the box and the comfort zone is left behind. Your dedicated CAB is exploring ways to promote our chapter, sewing and our talented members. Our chapter has been involved in sewing activities that have benefited Central Illinois for decades, yet few have ever heard of our sewing guild. Read on to find out how we are thinking differently. Several of our members sewed this year with ISU students during Fix It Friday events in the Bloomington/Normal area. All of us were quick to notice that our sewing skills benefited these students. In return, we made connections with the theatre costume department which houses fun and interesting finds like a large steam dye pot. Not to mention the creative energy of college students. Step out of your comfort zone and take the time to step onto a college campus. This year our chapter participated in Ignite Peoria, an event featuring 100 interactive booths for children. Our members promoted sewing to kids via a small sewing project. We also sponsored a sewing machine give away. How great is that? Take the challenge and discover a civic event the guild can participate in. Are you familiar with Maker Spaces? I had heard the term but was unfamiliar with the concept. The Fab Lab on the U of I campus is such a place. The lab is filled with technology for people to explore and use, including sewing and embroidery machines. Those of us on the tour started thinking of ways our members could benefit from the equipment available at the Fab Lab. And, as we watched college-aged individuals use sewing and embroidery machines, we realized our sewing skills would benefit them. Think outside the box, visit a makers space, and get your NG involved. The maker space networking resulted in meetings with the Peoria Art Guild and a tour of River City Lab in Peoria. Dialog is underway with the Art Guild to develop a teaching classroom for our use and the use of other fiber artists in the area. This cooperative effort has such potential for our membership. Our task is to push forward to help turn an empty room into a fun, creative space where we can teach others to sew and also take classes to build our skills. How wonderful to have the promotion and name recognition the Art Guild can provide for our chapter. Take the initiative and discover an Art Guild near you and make a call. River City Lab in Peoria is a makers space that holds interesting possibilities for our chapter. The dialog is just beginning as to what our involvement might be, but our chapter has a foot in the door and a place at the table, so to speak. I am thrilled with the prospect of a place our members can go to use equipment that we would not have in our home studios.
Dream big, think specialized industrial sewing machines, laser cutters and large format printers. Could be an end to taping digital patterns together. Be still my heart. Jump in, think outside the box and join your CAB in making our chapter the most exciting and vibrant chapter in all of ASG land.
