Cartoon Character Eulogy

Student Name: ___________________________________________________________________________________

You have been selected by the family of a recently deceased cartoon character to deliver the eulogy at that character’s funeral service. A eulogy is a speech given at any of a number of places in the burial process. Its intention is simply to remember the deceased in a positive fashion. Family, friends or clergy gives such speeches. Eulogies are formal speeches that combine snapshot memories of the person’s life, commentary about the legacy or impact that person has made, and the lasting impression that person’s presence has made on all of us. Eulogies are usually uplifting and often humorous pieces that lighten the mood of an otherwise somber moment. They can often be created and delivered in a theme or style that befits the one being memorialized. Consider the following:

▪ Select a cartoon character that you have a particular like and knowledge of. The character in question must be fictional.

▪ Brainstorm a series of memories/images that character has presented to you in your encounter with him/her. These snapshots will indicate your knowledge of this character’s “life”. Choose the most vivid or “telling” memories.

▪ Open with a general thank you to the family and a welcome to those present. Your speech is being delivered to those in the audience who already have knowledge of the person; so defining him or her is not necessary.

▪ Highlight the essence of the “memory” of that person – what overall, lasting legacy or impact as that character left on you and the audience

▪ Don’t be afraid to keep the commentary “light” or humorous since eulogies often serve as comic relief. But also don’t turn it into a stand-up comedy routine.

Some basic questions that can lead to the creation of the eulogy can be:

1. Why is the world impacted by the demise of your character?

2.  Give some favorite stories of why your character was special and will be missed?  I.E. " I remember when Charlie Brown was...."

3.  Give some favorite quotes or phrases your character is famous for saying?

4.  Name some accomplishments and achievements of your character?

5.  Who does this character leave behind in the wake of his demise?

6.  What were your character's final wishes or concerns?

7.  What would your character's tombstone read?

8.  How did your character die?

9.  What are some highlights of your character's life?

10.  If your character hadn't died would he or she be doing right now?

For your speech, you will need to prepare all of the following:

• A 3-4 minute eulogy of your cartoon character

• On a separate piece of paper, plan your speech in whatever format you want to. You just have to have evidence that you planned it ahead of time.

• A picture of your character

• A 30 to 60 second video of your character

• Dressed for a funeral (black)
