Our son Chuck sent us the following obituary published in The [Myrtle Beach, SC] Sun News from August 10 to August 12, 2012

Crystal Annette Bonnell

October 20, 1943 - August 9, 2012

Myrtle Beach

On August 9, 2012 the world lost a beautiful and inspiring Mother, Wife, Sister, Grandmother and Friend. Crystal Corwin Bonnell (68) was born October 20, 1943 in Morgantown, WV. After a long and valiant fight with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, she is now in heaven with the Lord.

Crystal was a gift from God and an angel to all who knew her. Her love was unforgettable and far reaching - her sweet and loving spirit lifted, protected, nurtured and encouraged everyone she met. Her life is to be celebrated and remembered always. It was her love of food and being the kitchen that she used to nourish the souls of her family, friends and community. She loved music, singing in the choir, going to church, cooking, helping others in need, spending time with her family, sharing stories of her life, shopping and more shopping. Above all she was the true definition of what it means to be a mother and wife.

Throughout her life, Crystal's faith in God was unbreakable. For the past 20 years, she was a member of Ocean View Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir, cooked and served food for the Men's and Women's Ministry events and The Singing Christmas Tree, taught Music Makers to the children, and volunteered in the Church Office. She was sent to serve the world in Jesus' name.

There is not a single person who met Crystal and was not forever changed by her genuineness, honesty, generosity, and strength. Her advice and guidance was pioneering and distinct - she knew how to orchestrate and pull together what she wanted with a level of detail and perfectionism that made everything she touched very special. She will be greatly missed and her spirit and legacy will live on forever.

Crystal is survived by her husband Danny Bonnell: her children, Danny Lee Bonnell and wife Amy, Beth Bonnell, Leigh Bonnell, and Ashleigh Hansberger; three grandchildren, Danny Lee III, Jade and Corwin; three siblings, Charles Corwin and wife Marlene, Cheryl Corwin and Cindy Walters; nephew, Nathan Walters and niece, Rachael Walters and many other family members.

Her life will be celebrated Sunday, August 12 at 2pm at Ocean View Baptist Church, 7300 N. Kings Hwy in Myrtle Beach, SC. Burial will be held at Southern Palms Memorial Gardens 5000 Hwy 17 S. North Myrtle Beach, SC. A wake was held Saturday, August 11 from 5-7pm at McMillan-Small Funeral Home in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Memorials may be made to: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, in memory or in honor of Crystal Bonnell, PO Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202.

[Ed. Note: The engagement announcement for Crystal Annette Corwin and P.F.C Danny Lee Bonnell was carried in the Dec. 6, 1961 issue of The Morgantown (WV) Post on page 5. It stated that Crystal was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Charles A. Corwin and Danny was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Chester Bonnell. In the database I found a Danny Lee Bonnell in Morgantown, WV but he is a much younger cousin of this Danny who wasn’t in the database, though his parents, Chester and Matilda were. Chester is 351867 in the database. Danny has been added and his number is 363003. His lineage is: William1, Nathaniel2, Isaac3, Abraham4, Abraham5, John6, Jonathan7, David8, Orville9, Chester10, Danny11.]

My high school friend Dick Bower from Binghamton, NY and our subscriber Carol Brotzman, brotzmans@ or R.R. 1, Box 1206, Laceyville, PA 18623, both sent me an obituary from the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin from Oct. 21, 2012 to Jul. 20, 2013.

Bunnell, John T.

Binghamton: John T. Bunnell, 77, of Binghamton passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at Valley View Nursing Home in Norwich. He was predeceased by his wife, Carole I. Bunnell; a daughter, Tammy Lamond and a sister. He is survived by his daughters, Robin and Steve Kennedy, Laurie and Kenny Thorn and Lisa McKercher; son-in-law, Steven Lamond; seven grandchildren, Angela and Robert Bailey, Tom and Michelle and Aimee Lamond, Megan Kelley and Matthew and Stacey Kellar; four great-grandchildren, Sophia, Autumn, Robert Christian and Athena and one sister. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association in honor of his daughter, Tammy or the Christian Children Fund of which he was a monthly contributor. A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are by Aegis Cremation & Funeral Services 196 Clinton Street Binghamton.

[Ed. Note: John is 036685 in the database, and was born March 29, 1935. The database shows him married to a Carole I. ______. This data is based on and Carole’s obituary.

This is an interesting situation. In the 1940 census I can find a John Bonnell, 5 years old living in Johnson City, NY. If proximity is a clue then this would be our most likely candidate to be this John Bunnell. When looking at the actual census record, I’ll admit that the name definitely looks like Bo rather than Bu. His parents are Cornelius and Eleanor Bonnell, both born in PA. He has a sister age 7 named Dora. Going to the database I find Cornelius and Eleanor Bunnell, not Bonnell. Cornelius is 351426, born in PA and by 1920 was living in Broome County not far from Binghamton or Johnson City. In the 1930 census this family’s name is spelled Bunnell. So, my belief is that for the 1940 census, the census taker spelled the name the way he thought he heard it and wrote the name as Bo. So the correct number for John T. Bunnell is 360494 and the data from 036685 will be combined with this one. His lineage is: William1, Benjamin2, Benjamin3, Solomon4, Benjamin5, John6, George7, Charles8, George9, Cornelius10, John11.]

He was currently hospitalized for pneumonia. … he was diagnosed with the lung disease 'Sarcoidosis' when he was in his 20s. He always blamed it from working in the factories in Ohio without proper protective equipment. Your cousin, Dane D. Bonnell” The following obituary is from the web pages for .

Obituary for Robert Bonnell

Robert Warren (Bob) Bonnell passed away at Grays Harbor Community Hospital on Friday morning, November 23, 2012. He was 72.

A lifelong hunter, Bob went on his last trip in mid-November and fell ill with pneumonia, from which he never recovered.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Royann, three children, Patty Bonnell Hasko, Bob Bonnell and Dan Bonnell, and a stepdaughter, Kristi Spargo. Dean Fulkerson, his stepson, passed away in 2000. He is also survived by his grandchildren Dane Bonnell, Clayton Paschke, Justin and Lindsy Spargo, and Darion Greenwood and Anthony Senn.

Bob was a larger than life character, often called “Buffalo Bob Bonnell” by those who knew him. A logger, and avid hunter and fisherman, Bob was happiest in nature and spent every chance he could driving logging roads, hunting with family and friends, or just walking outdoors. He was a gambler and an entrepreneur, and founded his own logging company, Bonnell & Sons Logging, in 1974 and a second company, Buffalo Timber, which he operated for over 30 years.

He was a Life Member of the Elks, Safari Club International and the Foundation for No. American Wild Sheep. He was a member of the Eagles and the Footprinters Association, and belonged to the NRA his entire adult life. He often donated logs for Loggers’ Playday, and he gave to darned near every charitable event you can imagine. When it snowed or was icy, he was known to fire up his Suburban or Hummer and cruise the roads looking for unfortunate folks who “might need a tow.” He never forgot a frozen winter day he spent in Iowa with his car in a ditch, and wanted to spare other folks that particular misery.

He and wife Royann have split their time between Aberdeen and Scottsdale, Arizona for the past several years, but he would never truly leave Grays Harbor. He loved it here, and will be buried at Fern Hill cemetery, on the very patch of land that he himself logged in the early 80s.

Visitation will be in the Chapel at Harrison Family Mortuary, located at 311 W. Market St. in Aberdeen on Friday, Nov. 30, from 11 till 8pm. Interment will be held on Saturday,December 1st at 1:30 at Fern Hill Cemetery.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Aberdeen Elks Club on Sunday, December 2 at 1:30.

[Ed. Note: Robert is 351801 in the database. His lineage is: William1, Nathaniel2, Nathaniel3, Nathaniel4, John5, Sylvanus6, James7, Albert8, Rollin9, Robert10.]

15   ANTIOCH

January 20, 1913--The skeleton of a man in summer clothing was discovered in a dense woods near Hackberry Thursday night by a crowd of opossum hunters headed by Johnson Yarbrough. The young hunters were frightened by the ghastly sight and did not make an investigation until Friday.

An examination next day showed that all the flesh was decayed except part of one foot which was protected by a shoe, and that possibly two years had elapsed since death. From the dried fragment of flesh in the shoe, it was ascertained the man was white. The sum of $1.61 was found in the pockets, a small collapsible drinking cup, a memorandum book without entries, compliments of McEwen Bank of McEwen, Tennessee, in it two ticket coupons from tickets bought at Clarksville and Cumberland City. Nearby gold-rimmed spectacles were found. The teeth indicated a person of middle age. No signs of violence or robbery and who he was and how the remains came there are mysteries. Found on a hillside in a dense woods about two miles from Hackberry and half a mile from Antioch Church.

Squire Matthew Sanders was notified and after holding an inquest, had the bones and clothing put in a box and buried.

During the first week in August, Ed Bagwell, who was cultivating a field of tobacco within twenty yards of the spot where the skeleton was found, saw many buzzards flying over the spot.

January 23, 1913--The skeleton found near Antioch Church last Thursday night, is thought to be a Mr. James C. Bunnell.

On July 29 Mr. Bunnell of Clarksville disappeared. On that day a carnival company was setting up its shows on the Public Square. Mr. Bunnell came uptown and as late as noon was seen at the corner of Franklin and Second Street at the Northern Bank. Since then, he has never been seen nor heard from.

The skeleton found was about the size of Mr. Bunnell. Mr. Bunnell had a brother, Dolph Bunnell living at McEwen. He also had a nephew connected at that time with the Bank of McEwen. In the pockets of the coat was found a memorandum book marked 'compliments of Bank of McEwen, McEwen, Tennessee'.

When Mr. Bunnell left home on the morning of July 29, he wore a pair of low tan shoes. The shoes found on the skeleton were also of that pattern. He also used eye glasses and at all times carried a pair with him. A pair of gold-rimmed glasses were found near the skeleton.

Relatives have been notified of the find and Mr. Blake Bunnell of Erin and Lee Orrell of Clarksville will go to Hackberry tomorrow and endeavor to identify the remains.

Mr. Bunnell wore a black hat when he disappeared, but the hat found was brown; it may have faded.

January 20, 1913--Two and a half years ago Morris Minor of District 19 disappeared during the summer. After he had been gone for several days, relatives became alarmed and formed a search. He walked away from home and was seen by railroad section men and others coming toward Clarksville but at Hematite all trace of him was lost. He was never seen nor heard from again.

It is only a few miles from Hematite to where the skeleton was found. Minor was a middle-age man, nearsighted and wore glasses all the time. The skeleton matches a man of his stature. He frequently traveled on the L & N Railroad between Cumberland City and Clarksville and would likely have the ticket coupons in his pockets.

January 23, 1913--Mr. Albert Minor, a brother, was accompanied from Hackberry by Mr. H.T. Hodges to the spot where the remains of a human skeleton were buried. When the teeth and skull were shown him, Mr. Minor almost instantly declared that it was not that of his brother.

The human skeleton was found by possum hunters near Hematite last Thursday night.

[Ed. Note: I contacted the Montgomery Co. Sheriff’s Department to see if there was any further identification of the body or if James Bunnell was ever found. They replied that their records didn’t go back that far. I also searched the TN Vital records that were available on-line without success. And I checked the county coroner’s office and state Department of Health, also without success. I cannot find any mention of James in following years’ census data. So my feeling is that when he disappeared, he never reappeared. And it is highly likely that it was he whose skeleton was found in the woods. If there was an autopsy done on the skeleton, I have not been able to find any results.

I agree with Michelle’s analysis. This was most likely James, CB007215. We have no lineage for him beyond his father, John C. Bunnell, born in VA in 1803. According to a biography of James’ brother, Theodore A. Bunnell (See Vol 22, No. 3, pg. 55), their father was born in Norfolk, VA. ]

Research Findings

Another e-bay purchase sent me digging through on-line research facilities. The picture on the left was identified on the back as “Agnes Bonell” and appears to have been taken in the early 1900s, possibly the late 1800s. Going through the database it appears that she is Agnes Arwilda Bonnell, CB002198. I could find no other Agnes Bonell (in all spelling variations) in Haverhill, MA during that period.

She is a descendant of the South Carolina Bonnells who settled there in 1690. The original settler, Daniel Bonnell, was a French Huguenot.

The 1910 census provides considerable information about Agnes. She was born about 1901 in Massachusetts, the daughter of Samuel J. and Annie J. Bonnell. [Massachusetts vital records, reflected in the data base, provides conflicting information as to the mother’s formal name: Alice Sullivan, Johanna Sullivan, Hannah J. Sullivan.] Agnes’ mother was born in Ireland in 1879 and her father Samuel was born in Canada.

The database shows her marrying Victor J. Forest, son of Gilbert & Rose (Gagnon) Forest on 18 Feb 1919 in Haverhill, MA. Victor was born 25 Feb 1894 in Oconto, WI. In the 1920 census she is living at 36 Primrose St., Haverhill, MA with husband Victor and daughter Margaret A., age 9 Months. His WW I Draft Registration Card (1917) stated that he was blind in one eye.

The Social Security Death index shows an Agnes Forrest, b. 16 Feb 1900 who died in Jan 1968 in Pittsfield, MA. But I have no way to confirm that this is Agnes (Bonnell) Forest. Other than that item, I can locate no information on any of the family: Agnes, Victor or Margaret. No census data available through two on-line sources lists them after the1920 census.

[page 165]

And the Acts of Last Session coming late to this District fell into the hands of a few individuals; who either from design or inattention never communicated to the publick, that such an Act was in being, Till the time of complying with it, was past, Therefore your Petitioners knew nothing of the Act till after the time was expired. And as advantages will now be taken by designing men; not only against your Petitioners, but against many of the good and industrious Citizens of this District. And Schemes entered into by persons, who support themselves, by fradulent and knavish practices, not only to the great damage of your Petitioners, but to the immense loss of many of the good people of this District. Therefore we petition for longer time to comply with the Act. And look up to you as the Guardians and Supporters of our lives liberty and property. Firmly relying on the justice and Equity of your honourable house so often experienced and which we are ever bound to acknowledge and your Petitioners will ever pray. September the 9th day 1791. –

Peter Helgesen, phelgesen@nc., sent me

In the database, Claude’s reference for the name is the Baptism records from the First Congregational Church, Plymouth, Litchfield Co., CT, showing him as baptized 14 Dec 1805.

When I went to The Bunnell/Bonnell Family in America, by William Austin (2nd edition), I find that on pg. 289 he records the name as James and references the same id number as Junius.  His reference is William Bunnell and His Descendents, by Ruth Cost Duncan, which also cites the Baptism Records. But talking with William Austin, he said that  he believed that Ruth, when transcribing the data, misread “James” as “Junius.” So he considered them one in the same, and James as the correct name. He shows the father Titus, and family, as selling property in CT in 1823 and being in NC by the 1830 census. He goes on to say that Titus and family moved to Hancock co. IL in 1845. Of course, by that time James/Junius would be about 40 years old so it is questionable whether he would have gone with them.

On 20 Jul 1830 J. Canfield Bunnell married Eliza Dunlap in Greene County, Alabama.

In 1837 Junius C. Bonnell purchased land in Greene county, Alabama, based on US General land Office Records. In fact he made two purchases there that year, one comprising nearly 80 acres and one of 40 acres.

lists Junius C. Bonnell buried in Mesopotamia Cemetery, Eutaw, Greene County, Alabama, having died 21 Sep 1842. It also lists his birth as 17 Oct 1805 which is in line with the baptism date

In there are 17 family trees that have been submitted showing Junius Bunnell or Bonnell. I don’t have much faith in those as very few provide any sources or references. And many times the submitters simply copied the info from one previously listed. So there is no policing of the accuracy.  Having said all that here is the info from one such tree. Two others spelling the name Bonnell are identical.

I contacted an owner of one of the trees.

Junius Canfield Bunnell

Birth: 17 Oct 1805

Death: 21 Sep 1842 - Greene, Alabama, United States

Marriage: 20 Jul 1830 - Greene, Alabama, United States

Spouse: Elizabeth K Eliza Dunlap

This one does provide a faint photo of the tombstone for Junius but the only sources listed are other family trees.

So I am now trying to locate a copy of the referenced baptism certificate from Plymouth, CT.

From digging around in and the database, I found that Myra Jean (Bunnell) Logsdon was born 31 Jul 1929 and died 10 Feb 2003. Her last residence was Bowling Green, Warren co., KY. She was married to Roy E. Logsdon, Jr. They had at least one daughter, Myra Diane Logsdon born 7 Apr 1950 in Hart co., KY and died 28 Jul 1948, Hart co., KY. Sources include the Social Security Death Index, Kentucky Death Index, 1911-2000 and Kentucky Death Records, 1852-1953.

Myra J. Bunnell is part of the Kentucky group. Her lineage goes back to Peter Bunnell and Susanna Erwin: Peter1, Samuel2, William3, Lawrence4, Myra5.

In the vol. 26, no. 2 (May 2012) Newsletter during a discussion of several George Bunnells, on page 31 there was an interesting entry from the US 1940 census for George William Bunnell, 342070. I’ve done a bit more research which resulted in more Bunnells and other data being found. Here is what started me on the hunt:

1940 U.S. Census, New Castle, Lawrence County, PA,

210 ½ Montgomery St.; George (ae. 58) & Cotta (ae. 50) Bunnell

Joseph Bunnell, Sr (ae.30), son of George,

210 Montgomery St; Paul and Rose DiDario, (both ae. 30)

Joseph Bunnell, Jr, Stepson of Paul DiDario (age is unreadable)

I should add that Paul and Rose also had a daughter, Joan, age 11, and read Joseph Jr’s age as 1. But I could not, still do not, understand how there could be a stepson of Paul DiDario living next door to the father.

The 1930 census shows Paul DiDario with his wife Rose and daughter Joan living with Paul’s brother-in-law, Andrew Ross. So it appears unlikely that Joseph Sr. was married to Rose, unless it was a short period of time in 1939, after which Rose remarried Paul.

From this point I started scouring websites for information on George, Joseph and Joseph Jr. And though my initial curiosity was never satisfied, I did find considerable information about Joseph Bonnell, Sr and Jr. In some cases, it’s difficult to be sure which one is being mentioned in the following newspaper articles.

New Castle News, 28 October 1929, pg. 2: Joseph Bunnell, George Bunnell Sr., and George Bunnell Jr were pallbearers at the funeral of William J. Riley.

New Castle News, 22 Jan 1930, pg. 24: At Susquehanna-George and Joseph Bunnell of Lafayette street left Sunday for Susquehanna, Pa. to work.

New Castle News, 9 October 1937, pg. 11: Joseph Bunnell of North Lafayette St is discharged from the Jameson Memorial Hospital.

New Castle News, 19 Nov 1943, Pg. 10: Joseph Bunnell, Jr, of South Lafayette Street, who underwent an operation for the removal on tonsils in the Jameson Memorial Hospital, has returned to his home.

New Castle News, 6 June 1961, page 6: Joseph Bunnell of 325 E. Washington St is admitted to the Jameson Memorial Hospital.

New Castle News, 4 May 1964, page 3: Joseph Bunnell of the Lawrence County Home is released from the Jameson Memorial Hospital.

New Castle News, 20 Aug 1964, page 12: Joseph Bunnell of 106 S. Crawford Ave passed his driver’s test.

New Castle News, 13 Sep 1965, pg. 16: Joseph J. Bunnell dies at hospital – Joseph J. Bunnell, 55, of 2801 Ellwood Rd. died in St. Francis Hospital at 8:45? a.m. yesterday after an illness.

He was born in Mahoningtown April 27, 1910, to George W. and Nora Gertrude Riley Bunnell. He married Mary Cummings in 1936?.

Mr. Bunnell was previously employed at Universal Rundle Corp. He was a member of St. Margaret Church.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Joseph James Jr. and Robert L. of New Castle; and a daughter Olive Mae of New Castle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Madeline Bradford in 1944; and a brother, George W. in 1963.

Friends will be received in the John A. Meehan Jr. Funeral Home, Highland at Lincoln Ave., from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Requim High Mass will be sung at 9 a.m. tomorrow at St. Mary Church by Rev Anthony B. Wehrle, pastor of St. Joseph the Worker Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.

The last entry alone provided a host of information we previously did not have:

Middle name of Joseph Sr and Jr (James)

birth place and exact date

mother’s middle and maiden name

wife’s name

second son and daughter’s existence

death dates of his sister and brother.

date of his death and burial location.

Joseph Sr is 352086 in the database. His lineage is: William1, Nathaniel2, Joseph3, David4, Nathaniel5, William6, Aaron7Henry8.

Please make the following changes on the Bunnell family website.

Vernon Louis Bonnell – He died as a baby.  I don’t know when he was born or died.

My mother, Madeline Hussey Bonnell – died on August 17, 2010.

Vernon is 352672 the database and Madeline is the spouse of Jay Abner Bonnell, Sr., no. 350829 and the brother of Vernon. Their parents are Henry Elias and Amy M. (Chambers) Bonnell. Henry’s line is: William1, Nathaniel2, Nathaniel3, James4, Abraham5, Samuel6, Aaron7, John8

Alice Janssen, gajanssen@ or 2428 Valley Park Dr., Cedar Falls, IA 50613-5210, sent several pages of material to update the database. I thought it would be a good idea to share them here also. I’ll share some this issue and more in later issues. Unfortunately, the Kinney children will only be mentioned in the notes section as the database is not set up to follow the female descendants. I don’t think I could handle a database that big. All changes are in bold and underlined.

Corrections

I was surprised that no one contacted me about the error on page 42 of the last issue. In the Direct Lines entry for Mary Cranford I left out an entire generation. Immediately following William Bunnell ~ AnnWilmot, the entry should be Nathaniel Bonnell ~ Susanna Whitehead. Then the next generation is Nathaniel Bonnell ~ Mary Searing.

DNA & Genealogy

Three things going on in the DNA realm.

First, Steve Bonnell wrote that we may have a Bonnell in Ireland who is going to participate in the DNA testing. This could help to settle whether or not one of our Bonnell lines emigrated from Ireland.

Secondly, Steven Bonnell received on short notice and forwarded to all e-mail recipients an offer from the Association of Professional Genealogist for us to sit in on a couple of their genealogical webinars.

The first one, “An Intro to DNA for Genealogists,” was held on Tuesday, 27 July. The second one was held on Thusday, 29 October.

The Tuesday night one, “An Intro to DNA for Genealogists,” was especially interesting. At the end there was time for questions and I asked about our method for computing the probable DNA values for our oldest ancestor. Essentially we used the dominant values for each of our participants, an approach first suggested by John Gregory Bunnell. It turns out that method is called “Triangulation” and is in fact used by the speaker at the Webinar.

The Thursday night one, titled “Yikes, My DNA Results are Back! Now What???” was also jam packed full of information.

The second item deals with the cost of testing. Again this year Family Tree DNA is offering discounted pricing as their Christmas season “gift.” Actually these prices are good. If you don’t use internet and want to participate, contact Charlie Bunnell and I’ll see if FTDNA has a non-internet method of participating.

Just remember to join through our family name by going to .

Post Script

Recently I read the opening pages of One Bassett Family in America, by Buell Burdett Bassette, 1926, self published. On page vi under the heading of Wise Words there is a quotation that really made me stop and think. I had never run through the mathematical exercise before to figure out how many ancestors I have covering the period since the start of settlement in the new world. This pretty well answers the question and it was written 100 years ago.

"Going backward, you have in the first generation two ancestors, a father and a mother; then four, then eight, etc. Upon reaching the time of the Pilgrim Fathers the number is 254. In the tenth generation the ancestors number 1000; in the twentieth they are more than a million. And this is going back only to the thirteenth century. One need [sic] to go but little farther to find an ancestry co.-extensive with the entire population of the globe. Verily we are 'members of one another' and the doctrine of the Brotherhood of Man becomes a mathematical certainty." - N. Y. American of Nov. 4, 1909.
