Imperial Esso in Gander

The story of Shell Oil has already been told on this website. As well,

another article explains the difference between Shell and Esso in

terms of clients and basic history in Gander. (See the main page

table of contents).

A large part of this presentation is based on two articles from

Imperial/Esso news magazines. Please note that there may be some

repetition in these articles even though they are ten years a part, the

first from early 1949 and the second from early 1959. One very

interesting aspect of these magazines is the difference in the front

covers. The 1949 cover is typically figurative, while the 1959 one is

extremely stylized, with an abstract painting that recalls the large

mural inside the ¡°new¡± terminal.
