| |October - November 2017 | |

Fall is in the air, trees are turning colors, chrysanthemums and pumpkins are popping up all around us, and we begin to look at the church calendar and plan Stewardship, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

This year the council requested a Stewardship Campaign, and I know when people hear these words they cringe and say, “Here it comes, the church wants money!” I would like for us to see this not as “The church wants money” but instead as a way we can grow generous hearts and live into the Great Commission: “…to go out into the world, baptizing and teaching in the name of Christ and to love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength and to love our neighbor as ourselves. If there are any measures we need to focus on, it is those.

Michael Erwin, a noted stewardship educator, shares with us:

“So, when we come to stewardship and generosity, we church leaders might be worried and anxious about the church budget. But the ultimate goal in this work is not the budget. God will support and equip the church, and doesn’t need our money to do it. What God needs is our hearts and minds and souls and strength.

But I will admit that our giving is a perfect entrée into more meaningful spirituality. Here’s a cartoon I really love. It’s obviously some poor soul who’s applying to enter the Pearly Gates. And St. Peter responds, “Charitable giving isn’t the ultimate test of one’s humanity, but it gives us some numbers to play with.”

The Annual Pledge Campaign -- money is an indicator of our values.

You know Matthew 6:21, but let’s read it again.

This is from Eugene Peterson’s translation, The Message, and it gets the point home:

The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being.

Our hearts follow our investments. If you go to the track and put $2 down on number 5 in the 7th race, you’ll follow that horse as it races around the track. And if you put $2,000 down on that same horse, you’ll follow it even closer. It’s true, wherever we put our treasure, that’s where our heart will end up being.

That’s why this work of stewardship and generosity is so important.

Your stewardship committee is busy working on our campaign for this year, so please, if you are asked to help…say yes and let us together grow generous hearts.

Walk. Give. Change the world.

“We've always known that CROP Hunger Walkers are generous and compassionate. We have seen that so clearly in recent days, as so many of you have reached out about how your Walks are supporting to those affected by Hurricane Harvey and in the path of Hurricane Irma.” -CWS

Your support of the CROP Hunger Walk forms the foundation of all Church World Service work and affords CWS the flexibility to respond as needed when disasters strike. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for each step you take and each dollar you raise.

Sunday, October 1st is the

Ripley County CROP Walk

at Dabney Baptist Church in Holton.

Registration is at 1pm; the walk begins at 2pm. Walkers and donations are still needed.

Please see Jeanne Lake or Jim Koester to walk or to make a donation.

Neighbors in Need (NIN) is a special mission offering of the UCC that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry(CAIM). Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries(JWM) to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants.

Neighbors in Need grants are awarded to churches and organizations doing justice work in their communities. These grants fund projects whose work ranges from direct service to community organizing and advocacy to address systemic injustice. Funding is provided through donations to the Neighbors in Need offering.

We will receive the Neighbors in Need offering on October 8, 2017 at our churches.

Bible Heroes

Once-A-Month Sunday School

Fourth FUNday-Sunday of each Month

Even with the busy-ness of Sunday mornings,

we still believe that Sunday School is a great chance to help build a faith-foundation for our children.

We hope our Once-A-Month Bible Heroes Sunday School will be part of that faith foundation.

October's Bible Heroes will be held on

Sunday, October 22.

Ages 3 & up!

Doughnuts at 9:15; birthdays and announcements at 9:25, class begins at 9:30.

Most of the Bible Heroes were ordinary people, like us!  “God uses ordinary people to fulfill His EXTRORDINARY Plan!”

Sunday school will again be sponsoring the Fall 500 Food Drive

to benefit our local food pantry.

They will be gathering food staples

November 5th – 26th

Veterans Day is intended to honor and thank all military personnel who served the United States in all wars, particularly living veterans. It is marked by parades and church services.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect. On November 11, 1919, Armistice Day was commemorated for the first time. In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed the day should be "filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory". There were plans for parades, public meetings and a brief suspension of business activities at 11am.

In 1926, the United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I and declared that the anniversary of the armistice should be commemorated with prayer and thanksgiving.

An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) was approved in 1938, which made November 11 in each year a legal holiday, known as Armistice Day, now known as Veterans Day.

We will observe this day in worship on Sunday November 12th.

With the retirement of Rev. Tom Frey, St John UCC Penntown will be hosting our Sunman

Community Thanksgiving Service

on Sunday evening, November 19th at 7pm.

At this time our local churches will worship together, bringing their collected canned goods to be blessed and given to our local food pantry. We will have fellowship in the church hall after the service. We will need refreshments, such as cookies, fruit, coffee and lemonade. Look for the sign-up in November!
