The First Nations People of Canada were the inhabitants of modern day Canada before the Europeans arrived. Both the French and First Nations People had numerous inventions; however, due to the time of these inventions, they are suited for different types of lifestyles. During the time of when First Nations people had not had any contact with the Europeans, they lived a simple lifestyle. They hunted animals, picked berries, fished, and very few major armed conflicts occurred between the different tribes. They were essentially hunters and gatherers. Their inventions included weapons like bows and arrows suited for hunting their food, tipis for shelter, and canoes and kayaks for transport on water. These inventions were perfectly suited for the lifestyle that was lived from as early as 1000 BC. The French inventions however, were more suited for modern day life. Military inventions such as sonar, which was invented by a French physicist to detect submarines was very helpful in the world wars that followed after. The French also invented the first digital calculator as well as canned food. The inventions from both the First Nations and French were useful only to themselves, but not for each other. The First Nations didn’t need digital calculators and they certainly did not need sonar that would be able to detect enemy submarines. Canned food also wasn’t necessary because they were able to hang and dry the meats and fish they caught themselves and there was an abundance of food. The First Nations inventions such as bows and arrows, tipis, and canoes and kayaks wouldn’t be as useful to the French. Bows and arrows wouldn’t have worked as well as the guns that the French had, houses were a more comfortable and clean option than tipis, and during the time of the French inventions, they had boats that would be much faster than canoes or kayaks. These First Nations inventions were very advanced for their time, they just weren’t meant to be used in the average lifestyle of a person during the 1800s-1900s. Both the First Nations and French inventions were impressive and advanced; however, the inventions from both groups were invented to cater to themselves, not each other. Therefore, because of the time and age of these inventions, they are not suitable for each other. Inventions from France - Listing of Famous French Inventors. (n.d.).
