United States Naval Academy

Connor McLauchlanPeriod XProf. KatzPhysics in FictionPhysics in fiction is one of the best capstone courses here at the Naval Academy. In this class you finally put together all the pieces of science that you have striven to learn for the past three years. The class is one of the most practical applications of science in a fun and exciting way. We read books, watched movies, and discussed the science behind them.In this I class I learned much more than I had thought possible. I entered into it with the expectation that we would briefly touch a topic then move on to cover as many books possible. We didn’t, the class was set at our own pace and when we wanted to discuss a topic like dark matter we took weeks out of the class to make sure we all had a better understanding. I really appreciated the depth of knowledge Professor Katz has on the course topics and her willingness to slow down and explain everything. The open atmosphere and environment you will find in this class in unbeatable.I believe that this class is a great way to generate interest in the sciences and their applications. Everyone today grew up watching Star Wars or Sci Fi classics and we all can agree that these movies sparked our interest into space and the sciences. This class takes that interest and explains the science behind those famous movies in a way that is captivating and thrilling.I think the course is structured well and I would not be opposed to multiple meetings a week. This was one of the few classes I enjoyed attending and I felt like I made a contribution to the learning atmosphere. I learned new material each week and discovered topics in science I had never even heard of before let alone understood. I recommend this course to anyone who has a basic knowledge of science and a desire to learn more about the mysterious world around them. It was an absolute pleasure. ................
