How to Write a Theatre Review (Based on an eHow article by SkipM624)

Name of Play: “Scots on the Rocks”; a parody of Macbeth (an imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist, or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect)

Characters: Macbeth (Thane of Glamis, a general in the Scottish army); Duncan (King of Scotland); The Witches; Banquo (co-general with Macbeth); Malcolm & Donalbain (Duncan’s sons); Macduff (Thane of Fife); Fleance (Banquo’s son); Lady Macbeth (Macbeth’s wife)

Macbeth

Likes

The joke about the witches e.g. Which Witch, Spell Witch and Weird Witch.

The actors were very serious and stayed in character e.g. didn’t laugh/stayed focused

The sound effects especially at the start and end of the play e.g. lightning, door knocking and sword “clanking”

I liked how Macbeth’s role was played. The actor really showed passion and courage

I liked the music that they used in between the scenes.

I liked how they used the witches as cheerleaders. I thought that was weird and funny.

I liked how the witches spoke their lines.

I liked how they switched the scenes quickly.

I liked Macbeth’s sense of humour and the fact that he was actually good inside.

I liked that all the characters were loud.

I liked the jokes especially when the spirit of the cauldron came out with the puppets.

I liked the curse of the name Macbeth i.e. how people died when they said his name.

I liked Macbeth and the King’s acting.

I liked the soldiers because one of them used to go to our school

I liked that Macbeth was actually a girl not a boy.

I liked that Macbeth was so funny and fearful.

I liked how the music was so loud that I felt like I was actually there in real life.

I liked the scenery/background and props (i.e. decorations, tables, chairs, fireplace etc.)

I liked the death of Macbeth because he killed the king.

Banquo when he was about to die, he told them reasons why he shouldn’t die.

Dislikes

It was hard to hear some actors.

I could not understand some of the words/character’s dialogue.

The music and sound effects were too loud.

The play was a good length but the ending was too quick.

The lighting was not that good. Sometimes the lighting hurt my eyes.

The seating arrangement was weird. It was hard to see sometimes because the person in front of me was tall.

It seems like Macbeth was a slave to his wife. I didn’t understand why he listened to his evil wife.

Some actors did not talk very much.

The play was too long. There was no intermission.

I did not like the character of Lady Macbeth.

I didn’t like the fact that Macbeth killed the king and many other people. He was so cruel.

Macbeth was greedy.

Macbeth acted like an idiot for no reason – he was an army general, he should have been smarter.

The lighting during set changes was not dark enough so you could see them switching the backdrop and furniture.

I think they should have set up the play in a bigger place.
