MARKET RESEARCH - LOCATION

City Selection

Select a city that you believe would make a good location for your new National Football League expansion team. You must choose a city where there is no current NFL team located. There will only be 1 franchise per city in this class. In the event that two teams select the same city, the team that best researches and explains their choice will get the city and the failing team must choose another city and redo all marketing research.

Marketing Research Components:

a. In a paragraph each, describe the following demographic and economic factors of the city, state:

4. Primary professions/industries

5. Colleges/Universities in the area

6. Forms of transportation in and around the city

7. Crime statistics

b. Describe the weather patterns during the football season (Sept – January).

c. List all professional sports teams in the state. If there is currently a professional football team in the city you selected, why do you think the city can support more than one team? Explain. If a professional football team has ever failed or been located in that city explain why.

d. Provide a 1 page map of the city/area. Include major highways or routes that customers will take to get to your location.

e. Describe the psychographic information about your area such as other attractions in the area, including historical sites, amusement parks, arenas, annual events, etc.

f. Major hotels and restaurants in the area.

g. Major newspapers in the city.

h. Explain why you selected the city and state for your team.

FRANCHISE INTRODUCTION

The name of your franchise is part of the branding of your team. Therefore, the name of your franchise should be:

• Easy to say

• Generates positive feelings and associations

• Translatable into a successful logo or logos

• Consistent with city, state, area, geography, history or organization

• Legally and ethically permissible (do not infringe on any trademarks – must be original!)

Once you have chosen your franchise name, complete the following in a 1-FULL PAGE essay (1” margins, double-spaced, 12pt-Times New Roman font):

1. Introduce your franchise to potential buyers

2. Write an explanation for why you chose the name

3. Determine AND EXPLAIN how your name will appear

Ex: the Atlanta braves typically just write the Braves in a specific font in red with a blue and white outline and include the tomahawk below.

• MUST be made from FELT (easily found at Wal-Mart or craft stores like Hobby Lobby or Michael’s)

• 1 background color, 2 accent colors

• Size must be 10” X 24”

• Visual representation – Design a ticket for admittance to your games. All elements of the design such as lettering, colors and graphics should reflect your team’s image. Choose your design elements carefully, including important information on tickets such as the location of the seat, the price, opponent, time, etc. Neatness and creativity count!

Food Concessions

Determine what types of concessions you will offer in your stadium. Think about your target market when selecting the concessions. You will need the following:

• Create 2 different food & beverage kiosks &/or restaurants within the stadium. NO alcoholic beverages allowed!

For each vendor, create the following:

• Unique name for each concession

• Unique logo for each concession (*Color)

• Explanation of location of each vendor/restaurant/kiosk (within the stadium) and type of food/beverage sold.

• Photos and a floor plan blue print of each vendor.

Spirit Merchandise Shop

Determine what types of merchandise you will offer in your stadium. Think about your target market when selecting the store. You will need the following:

• One (1) product prototype must be physically created

• Create a product page with photos of at least 4 different merchandise items that include one of your logos on the products.

• Create the following:

• Explanation of location of store (within the stadium) and type of merchandise sold.
