DESIGN PLAN

Use this space to make notes Here are 10 ways to add Coastal Farmhouse Style

Wall Color Architectural Details Flooring Large Furniture Pieces Fabrics Lighting Accent Furnishings Accessories Plants Natural Elements

WALL COLOR

Paint is the easiest and cheapest way to transform your space. Consider choosing your colors after deciding on bigger ticket items. Paints can be color matched. Choose paint colors that also include white and neutrals. Coastal Farmhouse colors are muddy and muted.

CHOOSING A PERFECT COASTAL PALETTE

ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS

Flaunt your home's good bones like beams, fireplaces, mantels, columns, ceiling height, moldings, or add where possible. Put the "farmhouse" in coastal with reclaimed, recycled and makeover finds that can be installed as architectural details. For example: weathered wooden shutters, thick beams, arch details, corbels. Consider exterior details such as a large covered porch, trellis, portico, lanai, shutters.

FLOORING

Flooring is considered a background color so choose a color that will go along with the other layers you'll be adding. Solid and patterned tile, engineered laminate, or natural wood and vinyl hold up well in a coastal home, near the beach or miles away. Area rugs, especially natural materials like sisal and jute or faded vintage styles are beautiful and practical choices.

LARGE FURNISHINGS

Coastal furniture should look like it will stand up to salty air and sandy feet even if you live hundreds of miles from the sea. Think about texture here and durability of the fabric as well as the color. A four poster bed, dining room set or sectional couches are investment pieces. Choose something you'll love for years. Changing out bedding, chair cushions, and pillows are much cheaper to change with seasons and tastes.

FABRICS

Fabrics used in coastal interior design should be comfortable, durable and anchor-your-feet-here friendly. Essential coastal patterns and organic fabrics will be your best bud as you customize the look and feel of your home. Indoor/Outdoor fabrics are perfect options for slipcovers and pillows. Adding printed motifs, large checks or stripe patterns gives Coastal Farmhouse its personality.

ACCENT & MISC PIECES

Coffee tables, consoles, side tables, and bookcases, shelves, chests and accent chairs add functionality to any space. Coastal Farmhouse style begs for a distressed pieces that you've reclaimed, salvaged or DIYed. A pastel colored side table or chunky natural wood coffee table are a perfect place to rest a beverage. A good mix of wood table tops and iron legs mix these styles perfectly.

LIGHTING

There are three types of lighting. General is for overall illumination that replaces natural light: canned lighting, a capiz shell chandelier or swing arm sconce will do. Task is for performing things like reading and cooking: pendant lights over a kitchen counter, bathroom vanity light, or table lamp. Accent creates visual interest and drama. Spotlight artwork, sculpture, plants or a prized coastal collection.

ACCESSORIES

This layer is all about accessorizing your home with items that hold meaning to you. If there's every a time to throw caution to the wind and express yourself, this is the place to show off and have fun. Some fun ideas: Sea shell or driftwood mirror (both easy DIY projects), oversized signage, vases, mounted sea fans, figurines, clocks. Think in terms of adding texture, color and interest.

PLANTS

Many plant varieties such as Jade, Spider and Peace Lily are low drama and practically maintenance free. Small trees, like Ficus, Parlor Palm and Yucca, also do well indoors. Faux plants make good alternatives. Choose containers embellished in wicker or roping, colorful ceramic pots, galvanized metal or distressed wooden pots to complement the Coastal Farmhouse style.

NATURAL ELEMENTS

Gather shells, sea glass, driftwood, roping and other collected beach treasures. Display on open shelves, table tops, side tables, console tables and mantels. Large shells or driftwood make unique sculptural statements. There are tons of easy DIY ideas to create vignettes, wreaths, garlands and one-of-a-kind pieces of art.
