Ciano, ClarenceWallac, Sherlyn G.“Fashion and Glamour,Ladies and gentlemen”Introduction:“Fashion and Glamour”, what comes into your mind when you hear this words? Others may think of make-ups, various styles of clothing, accessories, sexy and skinny models or actors and actresses who are walking along the runways with the flashes of cameras from everywhere or the commercials of your favorite actors and actresses. Every day, we encounter different people with different cultures and beliefs, in school, offices, church, malls, and other places. Does their taste of fashion are the same? Or different? The clothing style and fashion sense of the Filipinos in the modern-day era has been influenced by their native ancestors, the Spaniards, the Americans, and even the Japanese, as evidenced by the chronology of events that occurred in?Philippine history.?At present, Filipinos conform their way of dressing, in addition to the above factors, as a result of the influence of what is shown by the?media?on television, cinema, and fashion shows, among others.Aside from "colonial influences" and "media influence", the Filipino style of clothing had been dictated by the climate in the Philippines. With a tropical climate (dry and rainy seasons), early Filipinos - as well as the still extant tribal groups in the Philippines - wear colorful woven clothes, often with "intricate beadwork" and other ornaments. Other native clothing, during Pre-Spanish Philippines were the canga(a collarless shirt - which later became adorned with laces, trimmings, etc.)?and the?bahag(loincloth?or?G-string).Present-day Filipinos, due to climatic reasons, prefer to wear T-shirts combined with?maong?(jeans) trousers for men and skirts for women. The "jeans and T-shirts" combination was introduced to the Filipinos by the Americans. A common attire while at home areordinary?puruntongs?(singular:?puruntong, a type of pair of shorts or Capri pants) combined with sleeveless shirts or T-shirts. During the rainy season and cold evenings in December and January, some Filipinos wear hooded jackets.Today’s generation is called the “computer age” including the fact that the fashion industry is a product of the modern age. Prior to the mid-19th century, most clothing was?custom-made. It was handmade for individuals, either as home production or on order from dressmakers and tailors. By the beginning of the 20th century—with the rise of new technologies such as the?sewing machine, the rise of global capitalism and the development of the factory system of production, and the proliferation of retail outlets such as department stores—clothing had increasingly come to be?mass-produced?in standard sizes and sold at fixed prices. Lots of styles of clothing and accessories are loved by the people including those who are in the industry of artists and media. In the old days, men and women are contented wearing jeans and shirts. Their clothing is more conservative and less revealing comparing it to today’s age that various styles of clothing and accessories are being made and introduced. This just prove that people’s lifestyle are made faster and easier because of technologies. Traditional way of making and designing of clothes have changed same as the way of wearing this clothes.People then started to wear clothing and accessories in various desired styles. Sometimes, people are recognized by the way they dress. A person’s way of clothing may reflect demonstrate his or her attitude, culture, mood, level of confidence, interests, age, authority, values and sexual identity. Us people sometimes judge a person by its physical appearance including its style of clothing and the wearing of accessories. Here in the highlands, most people dress conservatively because of the cold weather especially when Christmas season is approaching. Although some may wear shorts and sandos (sleeveless shirt), that person may be immune to the weather.Discussion:But to furthermore know if people are conscious about fashion and glamour, me and my partner decided to do a survey and ask them specific questions that would help us know if they prefer being simple, do they dress as what we call “baduy”, or are following the trending styles for today’s generation, their likes and don’ts, how their lifestyle is affected by fashion and others.Shown below is the result of our survey, forty participants, including 24 women and 16 men answered the questioners. The male and female’s answers are counted separately.Survey QuestionMaleFemaleTotal1. Aside from the fact that a lot of foreigners are coming to visit and stay in our country and through media and internet we see a lot of foreign styles in fashion still, they are not influenced. This means that they prefer to have their own style of clothing and stay gorgeous and simple as the way they are and not to imitate their idol’s (local or international) style or way of dressing. From the second question, majority of them answered that it is important to be conscious on the style of their clothing and that they are aware on how they look by their dressing style. Most of the survey questions are answered by young adults so it is expected that they would say ‘yes’ as an answer, some of the girls are ‘kikays’(Filipino slang word for sassy, a female who loves make-up, fashion, accessories or girly stuffs and the likes) and young adults are really in the curiosity stage. According to Terry Heick, there are for stages of curiosity, these are:1. Process (‘tell me what to do’)This is the first level of curiosity and engagement, included here is their own survey of the activity to highlight areas they may like or dislike, or be prepared or unprepared to complete.2. Content (‘this is interesting, I’d like to learn more’)The Content Stage of curiosity and engagement. Students no longer have the compelling?big ideas of content obscured by instructions, activity design, or confusing–or well-intentioned but unnecessary in the face of budding curiosity–teacher directions.3. Transfer (‘move out of my way-but no too far’)Students begin to seamlessly connect knowledge, assimilating what they’re learning into what they already know. This can lead to transfer, where they—unprompted and without any cueing—transfer what they know from heavily-scaffold and supported situations, to new and unfamiliar situations.4. Self (‘this has changed me’)This is the most powerful level of curiosity not simply because of knowledge assimilations and transfer, but how it can change the student’s reasons for learning, and their own role in the learning process. A learner at this level will benefit from support, tools, models, and collaboration more than they might with direct instruction, rigid rubricsDuring weekends, most people do not go their offices or enter on their jobs, they just stay with their family and friends to have a bonding. Thy go to church together, have a picnic on the park or strolling around. So from the options, flats and sneakers are preferred to wear to for weekend activities. The weather in the place may also be considered as one of the reasons. On weekends, people stays at home to stay warm and most of them wear t-shirt without jackets inside their houses. Most jewelries are made of iron and it may only add to the coldness if people will wear it during cold weathers. Jewelries sometimes are also heavy and people wear it only for occasions (e.g. weddings, proms, pageants, parties, etc.). Majority of the answers from the survey have chosen bags as their accessories since most of them are students and still have classes during the weekends.Although mostly answered ‘no’ when asked if they watch movies or shows about fashion and glamour, majority of them are still aware that their physical appearance, including the way they dress reflect their personality.‘Ukay-ukay’, as we call it here in the Philippines was said to derive its name from the Filipino word, halukay, meaning to dig or to look for something. Some call it “UK” for short. Ilocano speakers are used to call it ‘wagwagan’. As early as the Spanish occupation, these shops were called segunda mano (second hand) and I guess until now, everyone can still relate to its meaning. As Filipinos, are fun of the ukay-ukay or ‘wag-wag’ especially here in Baguio. Many ukay-ukay buyers can attest on how much money they have saved from these stores. Aside from that, there are wider selections of clothes available here. Some hardcore ‘fashionistas’ also resort to ukay-ukay to find vintage and classic shoes and bags which are usually sold in high value in specialty shops. Though you might find some items here that have slight damages considering the fact that all were second hand used, but most of them are still in good shape and condition. Thus, we take the risk of our health.Although some prefer branded clothing maybe because they can afford to buy but also, they are not sacrificing their health just to get cheaper expenses when buying or shopping their clothes and accessories. They also use the internet to buy online to save time and effort. Compared to boys, girls spends more time to shop for their clothing and accessories. Below are some suggested online shopping spots for adults: Amazon (Check here for major brands) (apparel at discounted prices)Aeropostale (clothes, sleepwear for guys and girls)American eagle (clothes for guys and girls)Old Navy (great price on casual clothes)Go Jane (hip clothes and accessories)Pacific Sun wear (sport and outdoor clothing)Abercrombie (clothes fir guys and girls)Arden B (great dress selection)dELiA’s (sleepwear, dresses and more for girls)Urban Outfitters (get the cosmopolitan, undone look her)Dress is considered an aspect of?non-verbal communication?and has social significance for the audience. Dress also includes the things that people wear such as jewelry, ties, handbags, hats and glasses. Clothing conveys nonverbal clues about a person's personality, background and financial status. Consider how clothing style might send a negative message. A sloppy appearance, messy hair and wrinkled clothes sends the message, "I don't care," while appropriate attire demonstrates the importance of the occasion. Appropriate dress changes based on the occasion and has changed over history. Dress codes have built-in rules about the message sent by what a person wears and how they wear it. By showing positive aspects of yourself through dress, attire and grooming, you can?inspire?confidence in your abilities. As a?general?rule, attire should be chosen according to the type of audience, the event and the?purpose. Audience should be considered before choosing attire. Dress should be comfortable without looking over dressed. It’s something we do every day — wear clothes! Fashion can seem very elusive and only for the privileged.
