House of Surrogates

Sunday, 27 July 2014

This week's Sunday Best film profiles a controversial clinic in rural India where local women act as surrogates for childless Western

couples...for a fee.

House Of Surrogates, screening as part of the Sunday Best season of feature length documentaries, is an intimate film in an extraordinary

setting. The filmmakers gained unprecedented access to the clinic run by Dr Nayna Patel.

The last chance for many who dream of being parents, Dr Patel's centre is home for up to 80 surrogate mothers, who spend their entire

pregnancies living away from home.

After the babies are born, it can take up to eight weeks for the necessary paperwork to arrive before the Western couples can take them home.

Many employ the surrogate to wet-nurse the baby during this time. While critics accuse Dr Patel of exploiting the poor, she claims to be

empowering women by offering them life-changing sums of money.

Pot Cops: Buried in Weed

Tuesday, 29 July 2014

Deep in the vast forests of Northern California, marijuana harvest season kicks into high gear.

The determined Drug Enforcement Unit is working day and night to keep the upper hand in the drug war against the dangerous and unpredictable

growers - whether they are Mexican cartels or 'average Joe' farmers.

This week the 'pot cops' are involved in a bizarre, slow-speed chase that culminates in a strike against one of Humboldt's most notorious

pot-growing families.

It's a sophisticated grow with arms involved.

My Tattoo Addiction

Wednesday, 30 July 2014 Final

My Tattoo Addiction seeks to discover what people's tattoos say about their lives and reveals some of the compelling stories that lie beneath

the surface of body art.

There are an estimated 20 million tattoos in Britain and full arm, leg, chest, back and even head tattoos are now more popular than ever, but

having a large tattoo is both a huge statement and a financial commitment. Behind every tattoo lies a story - whether it's the erasing of an

ex-partner's name, the covering of an unfortunate phrase, remembering a loved one or overcoming illness. The series also hears about the

tattoos that people have lived to regret.

Whether it's a conscious decision or a thoughtless impulse, every tattoo is a statement of someone's hopes, ambitions or state of mind.

In the final episode, we meet people whose body art represents their way of moving on. Fifty-two-year-old Cathy's obsession with the Twilight

novels helped her come to terms with a difficult past - she has images from the books and movies tattooed all over her body. She has spent a

small fortune on them - but she loves them. Now in her 40s, Lindsey is getting her first tattoo to celebrate the most important person in her

life - her husband Damien, who died unexpectedly. She feels that getting a tattoo will help her move on with her life.

Andy is also looking at getting a commemorative tattoo - a picture of his wife - on his bum. While Dave hopes his new tattoo will cover the

scars of a failed relationship.
