Quiz Bowl Trash Tossups 1

1) The name’s the same: One has been a congressman from Long Island, New York since 1992, while the other has worked for a magazine since 1989. The first is a graduate of St. Francis University and Notre Dame Law School, while the other got his degree from Ohio University. One has written the books “Deliver Us From Evil” and “Terrible Beauty,” while the other has used his Monday Night Football experience to write “Football: A History of the Game” and “Inside the Helmet: A Player’s Eye View of Pro-Football.” FTP, name these people, the first of whom is the Chairman of the Homeland Security Commission, and the other who pens the Sports Illustrated column “Monday Morning Quarterback.”

Answer: Peter King

2) She’s worried that her father will be angry, but well, she’s just growing up so fast. He was always there for guidance, but now in her greatest time of need he is really pissed off. You see, her boyfriend (the one he warned her about) says she’s going to marry him and raise a family. But still, her friends are telling her to have an abortion, but she’s adamant about keeping her baby. She’s in an awful mess, and she doesn’t mean maybe. FTP, all this occurs in what Madonna song involving a young girl who’s in “trouble deep and losing sleep”, rerecorded a few years ago by Kelly Osborne?

Answer: Papa Don’t Preach

3) At the age of 15, he briefly worked as a lion tamer, and he danced along side Judy Garland at Liza Mineli’s birthday party. Although he only attended one year of “traditional” college, he has managed to make a decent career for himself. On October 8, 2004 he finally received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He has never turned down a movie role, claiming that whether the movie was good or bad it was at least an experience. Not only is he in the prestigious “5 Timers” club for Saturday Night Live, but he is one of only two actors to have a standing invitation to host every year if his schedule permits. For his Oscar wining performance, he ate a diet of only rice and bananas, and he is the only Oscar winner to portray a Bond villain. FTP, name this actor who works a jig or dance into every one of his movies, and starred in the MTV Music Video Award winning “Weapon of Choice” by Fatboy Slim.

Answer: Christopher Walken

4) Born September 8, 1959 he played high school football at Eisenhower High School in Rialto, California. While his teammate Ronnie Lott went on to USC and later the pro-football Hall of Fame, this man chose to go to Cal State-Fullerton, where he was a member of the Delta-Chi fraternity. While never reaching the same level as Lott, he did become famous in his own right. In 1995, he played racquetball with Donald Trump and Tupac Shakur in a charity event. He has appeared in over 200 television commercials, as well as direct the upcoming movie Distortion. However, he will be most remembered as a gameshow host. You could tell what season the show was in by his pants: khaki shorts for season one, jeans for two and three. FTP who is this man, who gave out Pendants of Life to the children worthy enough to enter Olmec’s Temple, on the cult gameshow “Legends of the Hidden Temple?”

Answer: Kirk Fogg

5) Released on Super Nintendo in 1994, it made Nintendo Power’s top 10 worst games list. The premise is pretty farfetched: your teammates have been kidnapped by an evil scientist, Dr. Max Cranium. You must find them before they’re turned into zombies. Enemies are killed by throwing 5 different kinds of basketballs at them, including iceballs, fireballs and super-bouncy balls. Corporate tie-ins include Wheaties and Gatorade powerups incase you’re low on health. FTP, name this game, which pits you as the greatest basketball player ever, in an attempt to rescue his Chicago Bulls teammates throughout the streets of Chicago.

Answer: Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City

6) This 1995 Disney “blockbuster” was written and directed by Holly Goldberg Sloan. It’s pretty much a ripoff of “Angels in the Outfield” and “The Mighty Ducks,” although it was nowhere near as successful or entertaining as those franchises. The movie takes place in the town of Elma, Texas. A group of children lose faith in themselves, but help is on the way. Their new teacher is from England, and as we know all English people can play soccer. So behind their new teacher/coach, the soccer team predictably goes from worst to first, and knocks off their archrivals in the championship. Some of the movie’s more memorable scenes, include the goalie imaging the other team as Zombies, Knights, and Mummies, before being knocked backwards into the goal. Like most Disney movies, it features an animal for comic relief and the fat kid from “The Sandlot.” What is this movie, which shares its name with the Dartmouth University athletic teams?

Answer: The Big Green

7) He is number 96 on Comedy Central’s greatest standup comics of all time. He made a run at Krusty the Klown and was “buried” along with the Sea Captain, and the Special Olympics. Born Joseph Gottleib in the Bronx in 1918, he has appeared in movies with both Maurice Chevalier in 1960, as well as Chuck Norris in 1986. He and his friends were banned from Marilyn Monroe’s funeral, and Pope John XXIII (23rd) once gave him a citation for his work with the Italian community. Besides Johnny Carson, he has hosted the Tonight Show 177 times, more than anyone else in history. In 1967 he got his own short lived talk show, with Regis Philbin playing his sidekick. He wasn’t nearly as well known, talented, or successful as the other members in his group, but he wrote their material and played the “straight man” as well as anyone could have asked. Name this man, who with the death of Frank Sinatra in 1998 became the only living member of “The Rat Pack.”

Answer: Joey Bishop

8) In his second season in the NHL, his team won their third and most recent Stanley Cup. He won the league’s MVP twice, and led the league in scoring 4 times. He’s the only player to win the Hart, Art Ross and Lady Bing trophies in one season, and actually accomplished that feat twice. He is thought to have revolutionized the game of hockey, by curving the blade of his stick. This innovation made him superb on faceoffs, as well as cause him to develop a new shot…the slapshot. He retired in 1980 with the second most amount of points ever scored, although he now ranks 12th on that list. Who is this player, nicknamed “Stan the Man”, who played his entire career with the Chicago Blachawks, and has a donut shop named after him frequented by Wayne and Garth?

Answer: Stan Mikita

9) Apparently, he got his name from a Burt Reynolds movie. He found his brother Woodknot in the World Trade Center, and his girlfriend Holly hosted the news. Though his city was only 8 feet tall, it included places like Fodor’s Fashions, Abby’s Attic, Brad’s Garage, Dave’s Diner, and Stickbucks Coffee. In one segment, he was blindfolded, dipped in a substance, and had to guess what it was he was stuck in. If he answered a trivia question wrong, a dunce cap was put on his head. He was spun around to choose what show was coming next. He loved The Secret World of Alex Mack, but “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” scared the shit out of him. As if he wasn’t badass enough Lemon Demon wrote a song about him. He always told his address in a jingle, advising you to “Write to me, PO Box 963, New York City, New York State, 10108.” FTP, who was this wooden host of “Nick in the Afternoon” who was made from a Popsicle stick with some googly eyes?

Answer: Stick Stickly

10) Some consider him a minor patriot, but others consider him to be on the same level as William Dawes or even Samuel Otis. He used a fife to sound the sweet notes of freedom, and a hatchet to hack away at the chains of oppression. Some think he tamed the buffalo, but he himself admits it was already tame…he just shot it. In a trip coming west in 1838, he is said to have killed a bear with his own hands. In actuality, it was the bear that killed him. His tongue was bitten off in a groghouse fight by a Turk, and it had to be replaced. Under a false name, he tried to rob George Washington. Who is this man, formerly known as Hans Sprungfeld, who thought “A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man,” and also founded the town of Springfield on The Simpsons.

Answer: Jebodiah Springfield

11) Jack didn’t go up the hill with Jill. He met her at the bus stop and she gave him the clap. The old lady who lived in the shoe? She was selling pot out of her backyard. Little Bo Peep killed her sheep and sold their skins to buy drugs. Cinderella had sex with the seven dwarves, and then got into a catfight with Snow White. Then things get complicated. The Three Little Pigs get high and want to take their revenge on the wolf. Instead, they see Humpty Dumpty smoking a joint on his wall and shoot him with an Uzi. Mr. Rodgers gets pissed off and goes with the wolf to kill the pigs and steal their ho, who is coincidentally, Cinderella. All this occurs in what Ice Cube song, off his 1990 album AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted?

Answer: A Gangsta’s Fairytale

12) In England, it’s known as a “chad.” In Chile, it’s a sapo, meaning toad. It’s also been called Clem, Overby, and Mr. Foo. It is supposedly located on the torch of the Statue of Liberty, the Marco Polo Bridge in China, in Polynesian huts, on the George Washington Bridge, at the peak of Mount Everest, on the underside of the Arc de Triomphe, scribbled in dust on the moon, around sewers in Paris, and as a tribute to it’s origin, on the WWII monument in Washington, D.C. An American Shipyard inspector is believed to be the man behind the drawing, marking ships he inspected with the infamous slogan. Troops seeing the slogan took it overseas with them to Europe, and came up with a nifty little drawing to go along with it. FTP, what is this drawing/motto, featuring a little man with a big nose peering over a ledge?

Answer: Accept either Kilroy or Kilroy was here

13) If you want to purchase one, just take Route 2 to the emporium and warehouse in Weekapaug. You can use them to attract customers, keep grandma company, protect your crops, or if you’re an African-American you can use it to hail a cab. It can also testify in church, raise the roof, or confuse your neighbors. FTP, what is this enormous blow-up cylinder, advertised by the fast talking slickster in the Family Guy Movie?

First, he can’t get change for a telephone, and goes crazy when he sees how much prices have inflated. While sitting to rest, he is confronted by 2 gang members. They demand his briefcase for intruding on their territory. He fights them off, and when they later try to kill him in a drive by, William shoots them and takes their gym bag of guns. He tries to get breakfast at Whammyburger, but he was a few minutes late. This causes him to pull out an uzi demanding food, and he becomes enraged again when his food is different than what was pictured. FTP, name this 1993 Joel Schumacher movie, featuring Michael Douglas as William “D-FENS” Forrester, and Robert Duvall as the cop trying to hunt him down.

Answer: Falling Down

15) This book is number 26 on the American Library Association’s list of “Most Challenged Books: 1990-2000.” Originally created by Harry Allard and James Marshall, those against the book claim the family is portrayed in a derogatory manner, and may even encourage children to be disobedient. Titles in their series include dying, taking off, stepping out, and having a ball. In 1996, Jon Landis directed a movie detailing the family’s pursuit of their garbage (which they believe was stolen) and the conspiracy they uncover in the process. What is the name of this extremely unintelligent family, crudely drawn in the book version, and headed by Tom Arnold in the movies?

Answer: The Stupids

16) Urban Dictionary defines it as “The dance floor in da middle of da club where the shawties shake their booties.” Apparently it can also mean “Da place where tha hustlers get crunk” or “A dance that shawties do to get the boys crunk” Rap Dictionary defines it simply as “to dance.” The Ying Yang Twins mention it 29 times in their song about the subject, off their album “Thug Walkin’” and advise you to whistle while doing it. FTP, what is this dance style that describes what happens when a woman “twists” and “works it”, and is often preceded by “get on the floor”?

Answer: Twurk or Twurkulator

The one in the Golden Age was powerless against wood, while the Silver Age one was given his powers by a dying alien. While he also had a limit to his power, he was the first superhero in the DC universe to use his power selfishly, in an attempt to woo his girlfriend Carol. The Silver Age’s hero’s home of Coast City was destroyed in the 1990’s, when Superman wannabe Hank Henshaw destroyed it to build Engine City. Eventually, the Silver Age hero went crazy and became Parallax, so Kyle Rainer was given the job by the Guardians of the Corps. FTP, who is this superhero or superheroes, whose main weakness is commonly the color yellow, and get their power from a ring that needs to be recharged every 24 hours?

Answer: Green Lantern

Sullivan award, given to the nation’s best amateur athlete, and he won a gold medal at the Olympics the following year. In 1989, he went right to the Angel’s rotation without having ever thrown a minor league game. His best season was in 1991, when he won 18 games while posting a 2.89 ERA, earning him a third place finish in the Cy Young award race. He later attempted comebacks with the Chicago White Sox in 1998, and later the Milwaukee Brewers, where defying all expectations, he once hit a triple. However, his most famous career moment came in 1993 when as a member of the New York Yankees he threw a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians. FTP, who is this now retired pitcher, who was born with only one arm?

After they were murdered, he escaped to the business district of level 88 where he befriended a pair of bounty hunters. He planned to buy his own ship with the money but couldn't resist trying to cut the price by stealing some parts. Unfortunately those parts were intended for the Millennium Falcon and he was caught by an angry Chewbacca. Han then took his prized Rancor-skin jacket as payment. Who, FTP, is this green, minor Star Wars bounty hunter, who nerds argue over whether he or Han shot first?

In fact, it’s everything he could need to win the spelling bee: Two cassettes, flash cards, an owner’s manual, a drum set, and the titular item. If the item is dead, you can dial a 1-800 number to get a new one. Things start out well, with Eric spelling such difficult words such as “Chalk” and “There.” On the day of the spelling bee however, things don’t go as well. Eric gets the word “chair” as his first word, and looks over to the titular object for help. However, the titular object is masturbating, causing Eric to become enraged. He ends up spelling “chair” as “C-H-A-R-E,” and is obviously disqualified. Eric then chases the titular object around the stage.
