Lord of the Flies:

Lord of the Flies:

The Character Dossier

You are a special agent hired by the FBI to investigate the strange happenings on an island in the South Pacific that were recently uncovered. You have been assigned to study the personality and background of one of the major participants in the unusual events. Because none of the boys is being very cooperative, it is your job to uncover your character’s inner workings and role within the plot of the story. The following items should be included in your dossier:

Components:

1. A description of the character’s personal appearance, along with an artist’s sketch or photograph (created by you, not the Internet).

2. A page (250-300 words) summarizing all personal biographical information available on the individual prior to the events of the novel. Base your information on the novel, but you also must add additional material that could be clearly supported or inferred from the descriptions and information given in the text. Make your character into a real child!

3. A well-developed analysis of the character’s change in behavior throughout his stay on the island. This analysis should be presented visually (using a graph) and in writing. Use the following format for your graph. On the Y-axis, use a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 being the most civilized and 10 being the most savage. For the X- axis, use the chapters of the book (1-12). Identify and plot 8 events that show the character’s progression from civility to savagery, and potentially, back again to civility. Your written analysis will clearly identify (with paraphrasing, quotations and citations) and explain the importance of each of the selected events to the character’s progression.

4. A final statement (100-150 words) summarizing your reactions to this character. Is he guilty of any crimes? Do you recommend any action be taken toward the character? Why or why not?

Requirements:

The dossier must be professionally presented, including a title page listing your names and the character’s name. The dossier should be typed, and double-spaced.

Every direct reference to the novel (paraphrase and direct quotation) must include a properly formatted in-text citation.

Your project is due on Friday, October 16th.
