Welcome to PESS! I am looking forward to working with each of you this semester. I have high expectations for your success in this class, and will do my part to help you be successful.

Course Description: Physics of Earth and Space Science is a required science course. . The curriculum for PESS is aligned with NGSS and will be taught through hands-on learning activities and laboratory exercises. PESS is a rigorous course designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of chemistry and physics while applying this knowledge to understand the Earth and the universe around them. Through inquiry-based activities students will gain comprehensive knowledge of concepts, such as matter and energy, atomic structure and nuclear decay, forces and motion, and waves. They will apply this knowledge towards understanding phenomena of our universe including the Big Bang theory, life cycle of stars, Earth processes and systems, as well as climate change and its effects on our planet. Extensive independent work, selfdiscipline and commitment to meet rigorous expectations and timelines are required for Honors PESS.

Materials Needed: Pencil or Pen (Blue or Black ink only, please) Notebook Paper Textbook ? HMH Science Dimensions: Earth and Space Science Composition Book (100 pages, college ruled)

Academic and Behavioral Expectations: 1. Be on time and be prepared to work. You should be in your assigned seat and working on your warm-up when the bell rings. 2. Always bring your materials to class. 3. Do your best work and do you own work. 4. Respect yourself, your teacher, and your classmates. 5. Raise your hand to speak.

Late Consequences: 1. Warning (2) 2. After-school Detention (2) 3. More than 4 = referral

Severe Clause: immediate administrative referral FCPS safety contract violation: results in detention/referral and removal from lab

Explanation of grading policy:

Grades will be determined by points and percentages, grades should not be expected to be rounded:

Tests/Quizzes 50%

A: 90 - 100

Labs

20%

B: 80-89.9

Class work

20%

C: 70-79.9

Homework 10%

D: 60-69.9

F: 59.9 and below

All assignments should be done neatly, must be your own work unless the assignment is specified as a group assignment and must be handed in on time.

Assignments turned in one day late will receive a 10% deduction, 2 days will receive a 50% deduction, and 3 or more will not receive credit.

Late work is accepted unless the answers have been reviewed in class. Students who are absent during a test should make arrangements with me to make-up the test within one week

of the test date. Students are expected to maintain an organized interactive notebook in a bound composition book throughout

the semester. Notebook checks may be done at any time during the semester.

Homework will be assigned as appropriate. Students should expect to reinforce material covered in class by keeping up-to-date on reading the corresponding sections in their textbook and completing any assigned homework. PESS is a subject that introduces a new vocabulary. It is strongly encouraged that students make flash cards to help them become familiar with these new terms.

Your final course grade will be based on the following: First term grade 50% Second term grade 50%

FCPS Regulation 500-05: A student who fails the second term of a one (1) credit semester course due to lack of acceptable effort may be failed for the course regardless of total quality points earned. Please make sure you have your contact information in HAC is correct so that you may receive updates regarding your students progress.

Access to student grades: Student grades can be accessed using HAC. If you are unable to access your child's grades, please contact me immediately. Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions or concerns regarding your student's grades. My email and voice mail information can be found on the front page.

Provisions for extra help and make-up policy: In case of school absence, it is the student's responsibility to get make-up work and complete it in a timely fashion. Sometimes (especially with labs), after school make-up work will be necessary. If you are absent due to a school/athletic event, all assignments are due on schedule. Tutoring is available during flex or after school, please see me to arrange a time. If you are absent on a test day, you should make arrangements to make it up within one week.

Clarification of Absences and Make-up work:

Excused Absences: It is the sole responsibility of the student to arrange make-up work for excused absences within two school days of the absence. The teacher will determine an appropriate time frame for the student to complete the make-up work. Failure to complete this work within this time frame will result in zeros as grades for these assignments. Unexcused Absences: As stated in Frederick County Public School's Regulation 500-25, "students have the right to make up class work missed and to have this work reviewed and evaluated by the teacher. Credit will not be given toward a grade for this work. Students have the responsibility to request make-up work within two (2) days of their return to school."

FLEX: The purpose of FLEX is to work on school related activities (homework, study for a test, etc) for 40 minutes. All school rules and expectations apply during FLEX. Students are expected to be on time with materials, to be respectful, to work with all teachers cooperatively, to attend tutoring when requested, and to use the time provided in a productive manner. FLEX is not a free-block; no listening to music, playing cards, sleeping, etc.

Students are strongly encouraged to make effective use of this valuable time. It is imperative that you seek help from the instructor as soon as you encounter difficulty in the course. Students are also invited to form study groups and peer pairs for studying purposes. You may sign up for FLEX on the clipboard in my classroom ? remember that there are priority days, so I may not

be able to pull you the day you want ? don't wait ? sign up as soon as possible in order to be pulled in a timely fashion to receive the help you need.

1:1 Initiative: Students are strongly encouraged to choose Option 1 and to avoid the use of a cell phone or other personal device.

Students may only use a school-issued Chromebook for tests and quizzes. We no longer have extra Chromebooks to check out from the Media Center. Personal devices cannot be used for tests and quizzes and will not be an excuse for not participating at the

scheduled time for a test or quiz. In addition, we have found some personal devices cannot display all the applications and websites that may be

used in the classroom. With the 1:1 initiative, cell phones should not be out and in use unless allowed by the teacher. FCPS Regulation 500-05: A student who fails the second term of a one (1) credit semester course due to lack of

acceptable effort may be failed for the course regardless of total quality points earned. Please make sure you have your contact information in HAC is correct so that you may receive updates regarding your students progress. Students should have their assigned Chromebook with them daily in class, charged and ready for class use.

I look forward to working with each one of you this semester. I believe in having fun and enjoying learning. That does not mean that classwork won't be challenging. I believe in mistakes, they are a beautiful thing and give us the opportunity to grow and learn. Never be afraid of trying, you may not be feel as if you are "good at science". My response to that is.... YET! I want you to try your best, everyone walks a mile one step at a time.

Titan Pride!!!
