Dinner/dance moving to Frederick

After a few really good experiences with the Mount Airy American Legion, the Linganore High School Alumni Association is moving the annual dinner/dance to the Francis Scott Key American Legion in the western section of Frederick. The date, changing also, will be Saturday, November 12.

A change in management at the Mount Airy Legion meant that the cost of renting the facility would have gone up considerably, and the alumni association would have needed to hike prices for the dinner/dance accordingly. Moving to a more accommodating location seems to be a better option to the Alumni Board of Directors, which unanimously approved the move.

The F.S.K. American Legion will host and cater our 23rd annual Dinner/Dance.

We will honor the Class of 1966, as its members celebrate their fiftieth reunion. Everyone attending seems to enjoy the experience that includes dinner, a brief program, and dancing,

Also celebrating special reunions that evening will be the classes of 1971, 1976, and 1981.

All alumni are invited to attend, but each year we highlight the five-year reunion classes, and give them time to speak during the program.

The evening begins with mingling around punch and snacks, starting at 5:30 p.m. The cash bar opens then, too.

A Charles Studio photographer will attend, ready to take couples photos, group photos, and class photos, beginning at 6 p.m. For $12, the studio will send you a beautiful 8” x 10” copy of the couple, group, or class photos taken during the social hour. If you are in one of the reunion classes, please be sure to arrive by 6:15, when the class photos are staged. These photographs are memorable “keepsakes” from the dinner/dance that you will enjoy years from now.

Also on the agenda will be a silent auction, organized by a not-so-silent auctioneer, Curtis Lawson ’78. If you have something to donate to the auction, please contact linganorehsalumni@ or Marty Burdette at 301-662-0775. The auction will be open from 5:30 until 9:30.

Dinner is served at 6:45 p.m., with a menu still being determined. The F.S.K. American Legion will provide the dinners this year.

Our favorite DJ, Darlene Weller McFarland ’70 will provide music for dancing from 9 until 11:30 p.m. Darlene always selects a variety of music to keep everyone active and happy,

The cost to attend the dinner/dance remains $30 per person. Dance Only admission is available for just $10.

Plan now to join us for a special night with your LHS friends! There is a reservation form in this newsletter.

This is also the perfect time to contribute to the alumni scholarship fund (totally optional).

Please send your reservation, with payment, to reach Kaye Horr by Oct. 24.

Seniors enjoy special breakfast

For the past 24 years, the LHS Alumni Association has hosted the annual Senior Breakfast event. The class of 2016 was very thankful for the efforts of our association. One special comment came from a class member who said that was so sweet of us to come serve them breakfast.

A special feature of this particular breakfast was our opportunity to spend the morning with Frances Wimmer (LHS Class of 1964), currently the LHS cafeteria manager. Fran plans to retire at the end of this school year. Congratulations, Fran, on your many years of service, feeding Frederick County schoolchildren.

Those helping to serve the breakfast included: Skip Isaacs ’66, Curtis Lawson ’77, Pam Grossnickle Tressler ’74, Bob ’80 and Jill Ensor (parents of a 2016 graduate), and Karen White ‘70. Welcome to the LHS Alumni Association, Class of 2016.

Alumni Family Picnic carries on

The sixth annual LHS Alumni family picnic will be held Sunday, August 14, 2016, starting at 11:30 a.m. Once again it will be held at Old National Pike Park, Pavilion 2. The park is located on Md. 144 between New Market and Mount Airy, east of Jesse Smith Road.

The park closes at dusk. We encourage you to hang out but after 4 p.m. our “official” activities may end. Everyone is welcome to stay until the park closes.

All alumni are invited to join in a picnic lunch, corn hole, and horseshoes. A volleyball court, playground, and shaded or paved walking trails are also available.

The picnic is intended to be a fun, family day. It is free for all. We provide the place, along with the corn hole boards and horseshoes. You provide food and drinks for your family or group. Trout’s Lighthouse Seafood and Deli (fried chicken), McDonald’s,

Burger King, Pasquali’s (pizza and subs), Domino’s

Pizza, South Street Subs, Food Lion, and Dunkin’

Donuts are all close by at Md. 75 and 144. Charcoal grills are available also. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and a bag of chips are totally acceptable fare too.

We hope to see you there on the 14th.

Alumni award three college scholarships

The Linganore High School Alumni Association awarded three $1,200 scholarships this summer, two to members of the same family, all Linganore graduates.

Matthew DeMember will be a freshman at Grove City College in Pennsylvania, where he plans to earn an MBA in business and play football. At Linganore, he was captain of the swimming team for two years, and also was on the track and field team. President of his class and a member of the Student Government Association, he was also in the concert choir and had the male lead in the play “Curtains.” He was active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Young Life. At Damascus Road church, he co-led a group of youngsters and has participated in mission trips.

At Linganore she was involved in chapel choir and the marching band. Class vice president and active in the Student Government Association, he was editor-in-chief of the school newspaper when it began a digital edition, played in the Symphony Band, and led the marching band for three years as drum major. He helped organize Red Cross blood drives at the high school, and coordinated Every 15 Minutes, a program informing teens of the dangers of driving while drinking. His younger brother is a current Linganore student.

They were selected from 25 applicants.

The Alumni Association currently has more than $53,000 invested with the Community Foundation of Frederick County and awards scholarships from annual investment earnings. Over the past 18 years, we have made 28 awards totaling more than $29,100.

Tractors in parking lot

The tradition of Drive Your Tractor to School Day continued this year. This has been a yearly occurrence since the early 1980s, at least. Every year it continues, it shows our connection to the farming community that surrounds us and that many of us were a part of growing up.

We’re not sure when they started using the last day for seniors as the day for the yearly event but these days that is when it occurs. This year they even had a contest with prizes for best historic, best modern, best overall, and most unique tractor, open to seniors and staff.

Thank you, Dustin Barnes ’18, for the tractor photos being shown on this page.

Best year ever for golf fundraiser

On May 13 the Linganore High School Alumni Association joined again with the Libertytown-Unionville Lions Club to hold the tenth Liberty Open Golf Classic, the last two being held at West Winds Golf Club near New London. Golfers teed off in the rain, and the rain got heavier as the morning progressed, but the sun was shining for lunch and the Shoot Out competition. Kevin Pickett won the $250 Shoot Out prize. Top score for the day was 64, turned in by the team of Kelly Kern ‘83, Karen Voellinger ‘80, and Klaudine Radford ‘84, and Bonnie O’Hearn ‘86, three sisters and a friend, all LHS grads. The ladies were enthusiastic and celebrated their victory in spite the rain.

Fifty-eight golfers enjoyed the event that started with doughnuts and coffee and ended with lunch provided by West Winds. The Johnsville 4-H Club baked cookies for the players. We thank the Damascus FFA, advisor Lori Powell ’87, and the Linganore FFA, advisors Tom Hawthorne ’68 and Pat Beachey ’80, for providing beautiful spring flower baskets for door prizes this year

We continue to partner with the Libertytown-Unionville Lions Club in sponsoring the Liberty Open Golf Classic. Marty Burdette and Anita Kent chaired the golf committee again this year, in what has become our most successful annual fundraising event. With many alumni contributing hard work and support, we again increased our proceeds. The golf tournament left a profit of about $7,750 that the two organizations will split, the money going to their respective scholarship funds.

Forty-five sponsors for the Golf Classic made this our most successful event to date. We recognize our Eagle sponsors: ($250 or more): Coppermine Applicators, Bob Pare ’87; Grindstone Construction, Nick Pollatos ’00; In Memory of Tim Baldwin; SKS Equipment & Diesel, Steve Kent ’74; Tiptons, Inc., Clarence and Phyllis ’65; Willow Grove Farm, John ’79 and Kathy ’78 Lyons; and Woodbine Equipment & Supply, Curtis Lawson ’78.

Alumni Birdie Sponsors ($150) included Dotterer Farms, Paul ’74 and Karen ’76 Dotterer; Gorsuch LLC, Dwight ’66, Susan ’69, Doug ’75, and Steve ’77; Kaye ’64 and Steve Horr; Skip ’66 and Donna Isaacs; Mike ’66 and Donna ’66 Grossnickle; Musselman Excavating, Inc., Jeff ’81; and New London Precision Instruments, Inc., Skip, Rosalie ’64 and Matt ’93 Brightwell.

Alumni Par Sponsors ($50 to $100) were Barbara ’69 and Jim ’68 Ferguson; Joyce Grossnickle ’78; Dennis ’64 and Roxie Mullinix; Paint, Patch & Repair, Inc., Pam Rollins ’77.

Alumni Cart Sponsors this year were Sue Ensor ’74; Carole ’63 and Paul Flynn; Tulip Pond Farms, Dave and Carole ’81 Doody; and Gary ’69 and Karen ’70 White.

We are grateful and appreciate all of these businesses and individuals for their support of the Linganore High Alumni Association. This event is the major fundraiser for our scholarship fund, managed by the Community Foundation of Frederick County.

Plan to join us next year for this important event.

Colorful T-shirts now being offered for sale

The Alumni Association has created attractive black, long-sleeved T-shirts with the Lancer logo, available for $15. They come in small, medium, large, and extra large sizes.

We also offer blankets with the LHS logo, in either red or black, for $45, and a series of small wooden replicas of the school in the various stages of Linganore’s history.

For all alumni merchandise, contact Sue Ensor at 410-967-0770 or sueensor@

Libertytown Carnival August 15 through 20

The Alumni Association has had a presence at the fire company carnival in Libertytown for at least 15 years. We started with a football throw many years ago and raised lots of money for our scholarship fund. As it became more difficult to find volunteers to man the booth, we evolved to setting up a stand where we can talk to fellow alumni and show off our wares (shirts, blankets, and other offerings). We need volunteers to sit and chat with other alumni during the evenings that week. Contact Marty (301-662-0775) or Sue Ensor (410-967-0770) to sign up. Come see us and tell us how we can improve our association. There will be registration forms for the Dinner/Dance there, too.

Leadership Change at Linganore

Dave Kehne, who became Linganore’s principal when classes were still being held at Oakdale High, is being transferred to Urbana High as that school’s principal. The new principal at LHS will be Nancy Doll, who is transferring from Brunswick High, where she was principal.  Previously, she had been at Windsor Knolls.

The announcement was made by Frederick County Public Schools on May 26.

Six high schools changed principals, and nine assistant principals were moved, Linganore is getting two of the assistant principals being transferred: Christopher Bittner (from Middletown) and Michelle Gilmore (from Gov. Thomas Johnson).
