4. REMARKS:

a. Closed status denotes that this office has provided final disposition instructions for the item(s). 5

b. Open status denotes that only partial disposition instructions have been provided, and that further instructions will be provided in a subsequent message by this office.

c. Information on the outbreak of E. coli Infections linked to romaine lettuce referenced in Advisory 2018-072 and 2018-073 can be found on the following websites: FDA: and CDC .

5. ALFOODACT messages may involve situations of serious adverse health consequences or death. Therefore, it is important for each message recipient to carefully read each ALFOODACT message in detail and take appropriate action expeditiously. Message recipients should take the appropriate and necessary follow-up actions for subsequent deliveries of the recalled item(s) to ensure compliance with the initial recall.

6. Reference 1.a. requires ALFOODACT message communicators to "Maintain records of ALFOODACT messages in accordance with DoD, DHA, DLA, and Service policies on records retention, and provide a copy of messages to supported activities upon request."

Procedures for being added and removed from the ALFOODACT distribution list are as follows: To be added or removed (whichever applies), please send a request to the VSIMS mailbox at usarmy.jbsa.medcom.mbx.medcom-vsims@mail.mil placing "ADD TO LIST or REMOVE FROM LIST" in the subject line. VSIMS must be provided with valid email addresses within the activity to ensure timely notification of receipt. Message recipients that may not have received a message can access DLA Troop Support's Food Safety Office web page for the latest message at .

7. Activities that discover a condition in a food or nonprescription drug that may require a recall should report it to DLA Troop Support Philadelphia, PA//DLA-FTW// IAW Enclosure 3.a.-c. of reference 1.a. While an activity may place an item on "Medical Hold" for a hazardous condition, the issuance of an ALFOODACT Recall Notice is restricted to the DLA Troop Support Consumer Safety Officer.

8. Disposition instructions are currently being placed below the body of each message and can be interpreted as follows:

a. Messages which state, "PLEASE PLACE THE PRODUCT ON MEDICAL HOLD AND CONTACT YOUR SUPPLIER FOR DISPOSITION INSTRUCTIONS," will indicate that no further disposition instructions will be provided by this office, and the action will be considered closed.

b. Only messages, which state, "the item is to be placed in a "Medical Hold" status and appropriate disposition instructions will be issued at a later date," will be considered open, and further instructions will be provided by this center. 9.
