TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES:

2007- UWSOM College Faculty mentor: mentor 5-6 second-year students each year, following the same group from their 1st through 4th years. In the second year, I teach this group of students professionalism, interviewing, and how to give oral case presentations and do write-ups. We meet once a week at the patients’ bedsides. During their 3rd and 4th years I assist the students with any problems during their 3rd year rotations and in making career decisions. I am their long-term mentor. I also assist in teaching the ICM II course to the 36-40 students in the Snake River College.

2007- Give the lectures on pediatric respiratory topics to the third year students during their pediatric inpatient rotations. This is an ongoing series and I speak twice a quarter.

2002- Actively involved with teaching UW medical students and pediatric residents on the inpatient pulmonary team and also on their pulmonary rotations.

2002- Actively involved with pediatric pulmonary fellowship training. I have assisted Dr. Gibson in making up the fellows training schedule and revising the curriculum. I specifically teach the fellows pulmonary physiology, care of neuromuscular patients, ventilator management and weaning strategies, and asthma. I also take first year fellows to Madigan Army Medical Center to teach them bronchoscopy skills on the bronchoscopy simulator, which is available at the Madigan Simulation Center, Tacoma WA.

2002- Annually give talks to the residents on the inpatient management of asthma.

1999-2002 As Chief, Department of Pediatrics at Madigan Army Medical Center I worked closely with the Pediatric Residency Program Director in shaping the pediatric resident program/curriculum.

1992-2002 Actively involved with curriculum development of the pediatric pulmonary rotation at Madigan Army Medical Center. Supervisor of pulmonary education for pediatric and family practice residents.

1992-2002 Actively involved with teaching ARNP students, medical students from UW and the Uniformed Health Services Medical School on the inpatient wards, outpatient general pediatric clinic, and during pediatric pulmonary rotations at Madigan Army Medical Center.

1996-2003 Actively involved with teaching flexible bronchoscopy skills to ENT and surgical residents through the Annual Bronchoscopy ENT course.

1993-1999 Coordinator of the daily pediatric resident lecture series. I developed the curriculum, lined up speakers, made up the schedule and gave approximately 5 talks a year myself. This was a CME approved educational series.

MENTORING:

2008- I am working with Dr. Striegl, pulmonary fellow, on a research project evaluating the use of the mechanical cough assist device in young children with tracheostomy tubes in place, using a sophisticated lung model.

2008- Mentor to 24 medical students (6 in each year) as UWSOM College Faculty

2006-2009 I assisted Dr. Hsia, pulmonary fellow, with his presentation of a patient with hepatopulmonary syndrome at a national conference. I supervised him on a research project studying the effects on ventilation from flexible bronchoscopy. This work was presented by him at the 2007 International meeting of the American Thoracic Society and published in Chest in January 2009.

2005- Supervised an undergraduate student, Weiya Zahng, now a medical student at UW, in a summer project on management of empyema at Seattle Children’s Hospital and another on determining differences in patients admitted for asthma to the ICU vs. ward. The empyema data was presented at the 2006 Annual Meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, Salt Lake City, and the asthma admission data was presented as a poster at the 2006 International Meeting of the American Thoracic Society, San Diego.

2003- As the primary academic clinician in the Pulmonary Division I am responsible for mentoring pulmonary fellows with respect to their clinical performance on the inpatient and outpatient services.
