Training in Paediatric Cardiology

1. Diagnosis and management of children and neonates with congenital heart disease. Management of children requiring peri-operative intensive care. Participation in cardiology consultation for inpatients. Outpatient clinics and Outreach clinics.

2. Fetal Cardiology:

1978. Performing fetal echocardiography, participation in the antenatal screening program, parental counseling at Prenatal Centrum, Bonn University Hospital, at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah and currently at Dorenbecker Hospital at Oregon Health and Science University.

1979. Fellowship in Fetal Cardiac Imaging using the latest 3D echocardiography and tissue Doppler at the Dorenbecker Hospital, at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland/Oregon (OHSU).

1980. Teaching premedical and medical students at OHSU the basic skills of cardiac imaging as well as fetal echocardiography.

1981. Perinatal cardiology fellowship at University of South Florida. Training included fetal and obstetric imaging, trnasvaginal ultrasound, parameters of fetal cardiac function, 3Dimensional echocardiographic imaging, fetal tissue Doppler imaging, parental counseling, assessment of patients for fetal intervention, post intervention follow up, post natal management. Presentations of research projects at learnt societies and writing grants .Teaching obstetric residents and pediatric cardiology fellows

3. Research activities:

MD thesis on "Long term results (10 years) of balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty in 100 Saudi neonates and children". Primary author of 14 clinical papers in pediatric and fetal cardiology including choice of projects, design of research protocol, data collection, statistical analysis of data on various computer programs., submission and editing according to the editor's advice. Primary author of "Perinatal Cardiology Handbook" in process at USA.

4. Practical Procedures:

Cardiac catheterization , under supervision of the consultant responsible of which many were performed unassisted including diagnostic cardiac catheterization , balloon dilatation, umbrella and coil occlusion of PDA, atrial septostomy, transvenous pacemakers, radiofrequency ablation and electrophysiological studies.

5. Echcardiographic examination:

Use of 2 dimensional and 3Dimensional, M-mode, flow and tissue Doppler, and transoesophageal echocardiography. Use of 3 D echocardiography in foetuses, neonates and children to diagnose complex congenital heart disease. Spectral tissue Doppler as well as strain rate imaging in fetuses.

6. Invasive Monitoring :

Including arterial and central venous lines.

7. Pediatric retrieval.

Transport of postoperative cardiac children from catheterisation laboratory or cardiac centres to our institution at St Augustin Kinderklinik, Germany. Taking care of cardiac patients during airborne emergency transportation.
