AP Psychology Timeline of Life Project

As a part of your test, as well as a way for you to apply most of the concepts of the unit, you will create a timeline of life. This will be due by the end of the week. This assignment is designed to serve 2 purposes, the first is to get you to think about development and see how the different stages we are going through at any given time affect other aspects of our development, the second is for you to create a tool that will help you review for the AP Exam.

Specifics: You will create a timeline based on an average lifespan of 75 years.

For each line, you will need information for each stage explaining what exactly is going on. You may put this information in the timeline itself, or create an “appendix” for each timeline where you explain what you have labeled on the time line. If you color-code the timeline, it will make it easier for you to follow along. If you really want to go the extra mile, drawing little illustrations for the different stages/points on the line will solidify your understanding.

Feel free to personalize the project. I have had students do it on one long piece of paper, do it on a computer, make a presi/powerpoint, etc. The main thing I want you to do is to have all the lines running concurrently, NOT separate lines. This is designed for you to clearly see at a glance the different stages of life you are in at different moments in your life.

Start with an “Age line across the top of the paper. This will be the “scale” that all your other time lines will follow. (Tip: the age line will need to start at negative 9 months to account for fetal development) I recommend making the first 20 years of your life take up about the same amount of space on the timeline as the next 55. I will explain and show you in class.

Physical development: Conception to death (Line 1)

Include stages of uterine development, infantile development, puberty, adolescence, decline of senses, Alzheimer’s, etc. Be sure to include any physical events you feel impact us.

Freud’s Psychosexual stages (Line 2)

Erickson’s Psychosocial stages (Line 3)

Piaget’s stages of development (Line 4)

Kholberg’s stages of development (your ages for the stages may vary from others) (Line 5)

Note:

Kubler-Ross’ stages of grief as an addition to the end of the timeline. (Appendix 1)

Ainsworth’s attachment styles to the timeline. (Appendix 2)

Harlowe-Attachment issues as well. (Appendix 3)

Major Theories of Language development- Include Skinner, Chomsky, and Whorf (Appendix 4)

If you have any questions, see the examples from the front table. Some of them have all the information on the timeline, others simply have the stage name on the timeline and all other information in a set of appendices that follow. Either way is acceptable as long as you have all the needed information.
