HISTORY:

Mechanism of injury * Sounds

• Where does it hurt? * Previous Injuries

• Does it lock or give out while walking

Observation - Compare bilaterally

• Discoloration *Deformity

• Swelling/Ballotment sign-effusion(when fluid escapes and collects in surrounding areas)

• Gait

Palpation

Feeling for: tenderness, deformity, temperature, muscle spasms, crepitus, and numbness

Bony -

Patella Head of fibula

Lat/med condyles of femur Patella Tendon to attachment

Lat/med Tibial plateau (joint line) Tibial Tuberosity

Soft Tissue-

Quads - Vastus Lateralis, Medialis, and Rectus Femoris

Hamstrings - Biceps Femoris, Semitendinosus, Semimembranosus

Medial Collateral Ligament and lateral Collateral Ligament

Meniscus

Special Tests

ROM (passive/active) plus strength tests

Knee extension-5-0 Knee Flexion 0-135 External rotation 20-30

Hip extension Hip Flexion Internal rotation 10-20

Perform each test below on two people and record +, -, Normal, Laxity
