SCRIPT-

You are becoming fluent readers and by now, you are determining the types of stories that you like or that put you to sleep! But if I say to you, "Find and read a book of historical fiction", would you know what that is or a title to choose from?

We know there are fiction and nonfiction, prose and poetry. Yet within these broad categories, there are types or genres of each. I want you to be aware of the types or genres in fiction.

I'll list some on the overhead, but I also have a sheet to give you for your reading notebook.

Young Adult fiction or Modern day stories of life as we know and

Contemporary Realistic fiction experience it

Epistolary novel A story written in letter form

Family saga Stories like LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRARIE

Historical fiction Stories based on historical events or facts

Horror Scary, frightful

Humor or parody Stories that make us laugh

Mystery Suspense

Romance Love and relationships

Science fiction A story set in the future or another time

Sports novel Characters involved in sports

War and espionage Stories involving conflicts, spies, battles

Fantasy "stretched out" stories

Sometimes, books could be a combination of two genres or fall in between, but this will help you when looking for a book to read. For example, if you know you don't like fantasy, then you won't read THE INDIAN IN THE CUPBOARD. This list I will be giving you is just a jump-start as you look for books. As you encounter more titles, add them to your list by the genre.
