University of Virginia Retirement and Savings Plans

The University of Virginia (UVA) is committed to helping you invest in your financial future. As a result, we are making changes to the University of Virginia Retirement and Savings Plans including the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), Medical Center Retirement Plan (MCRP), 403(b) Plan and Cash Match Plan. These changes apply to all participants, including those who are retired, terminated, or a beneficiary.

To help guide you toward the investment approach that best suits your style, we've created a simpler, three-tiered investment structure across all of the university's retirement plans. The implementation of this new investment structure will eliminate many existing mutual fund options and restrict five variable annuities to new contributions or purchases for investments in Tier 1 and Tier 2. However, many of the eliminated mutual fund options will be available through the self-directed brokerage in Tier 3. Variable annuities are not available through self-directed brokerage. If you take no action, the assets in those investment options will be moved into replacement funds, effective February 1, 2017, or else into a Tier 1 target-date fund. Please note: These changes do not affect the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) or the Commonwealth of Virginia 457 Deferred Compensation Plan.

TIAA annuities to be restricted

Effective February 1, 2017, five CREF variable annuities will be "restricted" and will no longer accept new contributions, transfers, or rollovers. Since these investments are variable annuities and are individually owned contracts, they can only be restricted and cannot be eliminated.

This means your existing assets will remain in these investments, and you may keep your assets in the restricted investments (unless you elect to transfer out). These investment options will no longer be monitored by the university as they will not be part of the approved lineup. However, if you currently contribute to any of the restricted investment options, any future contributions will be directed into the replacement options as shown below.

If you take no action, the assets in these funds will be moved to funds that have similar investment objectives and risks, as determined by the University of Virginia, effective February 1, 2017, or else into a Tier 1 target-date fund.
