REQUIRED POETRY PRESENTATION

LA4 POETRY PRESENTATION

Your purpose is to teach the poem to the class and demonstrate your knowledge of poetry by analyzing both structure and meaning. The assignment has three parts.

PART I

1. You will be assigned a poem by your teacher. Your poem may be rhymed, blank, or free verse.

If it is not in the textbook, you will be given a copy of the poem. Make extra copies!

HONORS: You should have already signed up for your poem related to the themes of TKAM by a poet from the 1950’s-present. See note on the 2nd page concerning this requirement.

2. Analyze the poem for the following:

STRUCTURE/FORM

* Summarize main techniques used (build thesis from this)

• Verse form (sonnet, ballad, lyric, etc.)

• Stanza form (4 quatrains, 3 quatrains and a couplet, etc.)

• Rhyme scheme (abab, etc. IF YOUR POEM DOES NOT RHYME, COMPLETE THE FIRST 10 LINES TO PROVE THERE IS NO REGULAR RHYME SCHEME)

• Metrical foot (HONORS: scan for patterns/type)

POETIC DEVICES which lead to meaning/understanding of stanzas and how the poetic devices help the reader understand the poem. Your poem may not have ALL these devices, but you should determine this in your analysis.

• Figurative language (simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, etc.)

• Sound devices (onomatopoeia, alliteration, consonance, assonance, types of rhyme, etc.)

• Types of imagery ( tactile, thermal, auditory, visual, olfactory, gustatory, kinetic, and kinesthetic) Although the poem may not have all of these, look for as many as possible

• Theme/message (You will determine the overall theme and discuss meaning of each stanza as it relates to the theme and how the poetic devices help the reader understand the poem.)

3. Neatly print or type out this information as well as a copy of the poem as an outline to use when you make slides. You will work on the analysis in class the week of 5-20. You will also need to work from HOME. The outline is due WEDNESDAY (5-22).

PART II

Create a Google Slideshow. We will be using the chrome books in class after lessons on 5/22, 5/23, 5/28 to complete the slide show and are going to the Media Center on 5/29 to PRINT a handout copy and make note cards. If you do work at home, it is your responsibility to make sure it works on our computer in the classroom. You should be using Google Slides. The slides will help you teach the poem to the class and demonstrate your knowledge of poetry. Use clip art and color that is easy to see and that enhances the meaning of the poem. Keep special effects, such as sound and movement, to a minimum so they do not detract from meaning. All graphics should be visible and colors chosen carefully so that they are clear.

Slides should include (in this order):

• A title slide that includes the poet’s name

• A thesis slide that indicates the speaker and the main techniques used to get the message/ mood across.

• A separate slide for each part of the analysis. These slides will contain the points of analysis listed above. It is best to break up information by doing STRUCTURE (verse & stanza form, rhyme scheme, metrical foot, if applicable) slides first, then addressing POETIC DEVICES within each stanza (sound devices, imagery, and figurative language). A separate slide for EACH stanza is required to do this. If stanzas are long, you may break them up into chunks, and label slide # continued.

• Theme/meaning/slide should follow all of the above slides as you come to a final conclusion about your poem.

• Finish with a final slide that contains your full name and hour.

TIPS: Choose a lay-out that allows room for stanza, labeling, and graphics to fit your poem.

DO NOT crowd slides with too much information! Choose fonts/colors that can easily be seen by the audience. I suggest doing all the written work FIRST, then adding graphics and backgrounds that enhance, not distort, your presentation.

****All Google slide presentations must be sent to Google Classroom. You will get a class code by hour in class. Students will NOT be able to access their own email for presentations, so do not have it in your personal email account. All projects are due on Wenesday, May 29 by the end of your class hour to be on time. Late projects will receive reduced credit. You must supply the teacher with a printed copy of the presentation by this date. Please use the hand-out format with 4-6 slides per page. Create your speech cards from your handout (print an extra copy). Projects submitted after Thurs will be reduced by one-third of earned grade. Presentations begin on Thursday, May 30th.

.

PARTIII

Present your poem to the class. All students will be ready to begin on May 30th. If you are not ready to present on that day, then it will be LATE, and marked down a full grade.

1. You will first need to recite the poem to the class in its entirety. Please recite with feeling, and

loudly enough for everyone to hear. This is graded under DYNAMICS and CLARITY on the

rubric. Poem recitation, while not memorized in its entirety, must demonstrate familiarity and

practice. Accurate pronunciation, flow, and inflection are a must! Practice, practice, practice!

2. As in all papers and speeches, a thesis statement and restatement are necessary. In this

assignment, the thesis will introduce the analysis of the elements of poetry as they are used to

present the theme of the poem. At the end, a restatement is given as you make some final

statements about the overall meaning of your poem.

3. You should look at your audience as you explain each slide. DO NOT read off the slides!

You should have your own outline from which to make note cards, and are expected to use them

to keep your place. Look at the audience as you explain. This is graded as EYE CONTACT on

the rubric.

4. The presentation needs to be three to six minutes. Going over or under time equals lost points in

the TIME section of the rubric. Practice makes perfect! RUBRICS will be on the blog at a later

date.

HONORS: Make sure your discussion includes connections to the novel as well as real world social issues of the era in terms of themes/motifs. This should be part of your thesis, body, and overall connection at the end.
