Title of Lesson/Unit:

__Polygon Sum Conjecture __________________________________________

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) STEM Concepts Addressed: ____Algebra and Geometry - discovery learning to find a formula to figure the sum of

the interior angles of an n-gon______________________________________________

Length of instruction period: __20________

How many periods needed to implement lesson unit: ____1 or 2______

Grade Level(s) for use:

____8 - 12______________________________________________

Objectives:

1. _The students will draw geometric solids and dimension all of the angles.________

2. _The students will total the included angles in geometric solids.________________

3. _The students will use their knowledge of figuring out patterns to come up with the

equation for the sum of the angles inside the nth geometric solid. __________

Materials:

_SolidWorks, Calculator, pencil and paper__________________________

Procedures:

1. _Have students draw and dimension a triangle, a quadrangle, a polygon, a hexagon, a heptagon, and an octagon.

2. Have the students make a drawing that includes the polygons that they just created.

3. Record the total number of included angles in each polygon.

4. Using the total number of angles in each polygon find a rule that will work with all polygons and state what the total number of degrees will be for an n-gon.

Assessment:

__Students should have completed the drawings and also found the Polygon Sum Conjecture “180(n-2)+degrees.”________________________________________
