Comprehensive Hospital Abstract Reporting System (CHARS)Hospital Inpatient and Observation Dataset: File InformationDear Data UserFor a data download with Full, half or quarter year data, both SAS and CSV files formats will be on the downloadable zipped file. In each set are Microsoft Excel files with electronic copies of the latest CHARS Hospital Directory and file layouts for each file type. All but the data files are also at: CSV files, which is also known as Comma Separated Values, there are commas to separate the data fields, the title is in the first row and quotes are used around text data. Please refer to the file layout information for more information. For the files in SAS, the data is formatted with the column titles. The data should import into your similar program version with little problem. Of course the titles and formatting of the data may not be in your preferred setup. The data file names are truncated. The file does not need a unzip program as they are self-extracting folders. You will uncompress from your hard drive. Use Windows Explorer, click on the folder and the folder will open. There is a very large difference between the compressed and uncompressed file size.
