Instructions for Downloading Student Data Files for IS340
Download a .ZIP file
(Excel 2007/Grauer)
1. Insert a jump drive into a USB port
2. Start Internet Explorer (or other Web browser)
3. Type the following address (URL):
4. Press the Enter key
5. Click the Student Resources link under MICROSOFT OFFICE 2007.
NOTE: if at any point in this process a Debug message appears, always click NO.
6. On the Student Data Files page, under the Comprehensive, 1/e heading, click the Excel Comprehensive link.
7. Click the Extract All Files link under the Folder Tasks heading.
8. Click the Next button in the Extraction Wizard window.
9. In the Extraction Wizard window, navigate to (locate and select) the drive containing your Jump drive (or a folder on the hard drive). It may be identified by a drive letter and/or as a Public Disk or as USB Memory. You must create a folder on the jump drive to contain the Student Data files. Navigate to this folder.
NOTE: the Root folder on a drive may contain only a limited number of files, so SAVE THESE FILES INTO A FOLDER (such as Excel or IS340Files). Do NOT save them to the Root folder of a drive.
10. Click the Next button.
11. When file transfer has completed, click the Finish button.
12. Close any open windows and exit Internet Explorer.
13. After the files have been extracted, a new folder, exp_excel_comp_sdf, will appear under the folder you chose on your jump drive. It will contain 10 sub-folders, one for each chapter of the text, and the class files are located in these folders.
NOTE: You must save all of your work to your Jump drive. If you use 1.44MB floppy disk you may not have enough space to save all the files, and save all your homework files during the course.
NOTE: Absolutely no classroom time will be spent on file management with 1.44MB (or other size) floppy disks. If you choose to use 1.44 MB floppy disks (or other sizes) rather than a Jump Drive, the assumption is made that you are competent to do so. Questions about file transfer methodologies may be addressed to the instructor during office hours, NOT during classroom time.
NOTE: Remember to BACKUP your data files. Disks& Drives seem to fail at the worst possible moments, so you should always have at least one backup of your data files with you during the days you will be working in the computer room. A failed disk and no backups will result in your being asked to leave the classroom for the day, and you will receive an unexcused absence for that class period.
ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR FILES !!!!!!!
Some homework problems may be dependant on previous coursework and failing to backup your files may result in many hours doing prior homework over again.
