The Hero’s Journey:

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Record the events in the film that match the Hero’s Journey. You might not find an example for each stage. The first stage is done to help you!

Stage 1 – The Departure

1. The Call to Adventure – Elizabeth Swan is kidnapped by Barbossa and Port Royal is ambushed by the pirates of the Black Pearl. Will wants to save her.

2. Refusal of the Call – The Commodore and her father refuse to let Will help plan the rescue. He’s “just a blacksmith”.

3. Supernatural Aid – Will frees Jack Sparrow from jail to assist him in finding the Black Pearl. His compass points to what he most desires = magical!

4. The Crossing of the First Threshold (doorway) – Will & Jack walking away from Port Royal on the bottom of the sea under the boat / When Will and Jack steal the British Navy’s ship.

5. The Belly of the Whale – Will & Jack Stealing the INTERCEPTOR and sailing away from Port Royal.

Stage 2 – The Initiation

1. The Road of Trials – WILL 1. Finding a pirate crew in Tortuga 2. Surviving the storm at sea 3. Rescuing Elizabeth from the Isla Del Muerta 4. Surviving battle with Black Pearl (explosion)

2. The Meeting with the Goddess – Rescuing Elizabeth and treating her wounds. Will almost kisses her but then she reveals that the Aztec gold was on him when he was rescued.

3. Temptation – Jack would rather drink the rum than be rescued by the burning rum fire.

4. Atonement with the Father – Discovers his father, Bootstrap Bill, was a pirate but had honour because he believed that they broke the pirate’s code by abandoning Jack & stealing the Black Pearl. Thought they deserved to be cursed.

*Will dies (sacrifices his life to save Elizabeth).

5. Apotheosis (rest) – When Jack & Elizabeth are left on the island of rum.

6. The Ultimate Boon/treasure Will saves Elizabeth’s life. Jack gets the Black Pearl back. Elizabeth’s goal to be with Will.

Stage 3 – The Return

1. Refusal of the Return – Will sacrifices himself to save Elizabeth. Hanging Jack as a pirate is his refusal. Elizabeth’s promise to marry the commodore is her refusal.

2. The Magic Flight – Jack shoots Barbossa at the exact moment that Will breaks the curse. Barbossa is mortally wounded.

3. Rescue from Without – Will rescues Jack by throwing his sword under the gallows. The pirates also save Jack. Elizabeth rescues Will and Jack from hanging. Will rescues Elizabeth from marrying the Commodore.

4. The Crossing of the Return Threshold – Jack dives into the sea & is picked up by Pearl so returns to his ‘home’. Will & Elizabeth are back in Port Royal.

5. Master of Two Worlds - Will admits and accepts that he is a pirate by standing up for Jack. Elizabeth accepts him and her love for him.

6. Freedom to Live – Elizabeth leaves her old life and accepts Will, a pirate & a blacksmith, as her life partner. Her father & the commodore accepts their relationship too.
