3. Give 1-3 examples for each characteristic from the film.

4. If the characteristic was not in evidence, explain what why or how that was not a characteristic of the story.

5. For each film, write an essay explaining whether or not that film is a good example or a non-example of that genre.

6. Final draft should be neat and complete. The characteristics and examples should be clear and easy to read/understand (like the forms). The essays should either be typed or printed neatly and correctly. There should be a total of 6 pages – One characteristics/example sheet from each of the three films and one essay for each of the films.

Characters, Themes, Plots, Art, Historical/Cultural/Political CONTEXT – CURRENT ERA – POST POST MOD

FILM TITLE:

• Global and/multicultural – diversity in all aspects is supported and embraced – “unique” is good

o

o

o

• Reliance on suspension of disbelief; paradox; juxtaposition and other surreal elements – magical realism

o

o

o

• SHOCK VALUE – use vulgarity, gore, violation of social norms for the sake of audience interest - cliffhangers

o

o

o

• Series oriented; long-term characters and characterization – background knowledge a plus but not nec

o

o

o

• Moral Ambiguity Motif: “cautionary tales” – characters “bad” but likeable; who decides “right v wrong” in absence of religious belief or faith?

o

o

o

• Cult of personality – people who are famous for being famous (rather than becoming famous for talent or ability) – i.e. reality tv stars, youtube, twitter, etc… - Asks audience to question what IS REAL?

o

o

o

• Gallows or DARK humor; New or “Gonzo” journalism aka Literary Journalism; Surrealism/Fantasy; post apocalyptic/dystopian – other ways to question or confront TRUTH – DOES IT STILL EXIST?

o

o

o

• Old made new; re-hash or revision updating of historical genre aspects; nothing is unique – characteristics from all previous literary periods co-exist to make something “new”

o

o

o

• Reliance on technology/digital effects – to share the information; promote; create; emphasize, etc…
