2016 Youth Symposium Documents

Introduction

As a group we started our meetings by taking turns around the table to discuss what Moo Duk Kwan identity meant for each Youth Leader.

A common response was that mentioning how important the Moo Do values were to them.

While at first as a group we were unsure how to proceed with the project from the many ideas and suggestions provided by the group, we soon realized that by being here at the youth leaders symposium we could honor our past seniors and instructors with Heng Dong Chul Hak Kang Hwa, or Strengthening Philosophy Through Action.

Upon further contemplation noted that our Moo Do jaseh is our living example of putting our philosophy into action and that we are constantly honoring the past in our actions and interactions.

With this in mind our question for ourselves became: how can we honor our seniors and their legacy by honoring ourselves at the same time.

From our week of training and meeting together to build an international connection between the youth leaders we present the following as a show of our time together.

- A physical demonstration of the whole group to show how we have progressed this week. (to be presented as part of the KDJSS demonstrations)

- Our Mission statement (Part 1 of this document)

- Some proposals for the future of the Youth Leadership program (Part 2 of this document)

- A proposal for a video “Moo Duk Kwan Around The World” (Part 3 of this document)

Pt. I - Youth Leaders Mission

-To preserve the Moo Duk Kwan as created by its founder, Hwang Kee.

-To seek to strengthen and promote the global identity of Moo Duk Kwan through social media and in our daily lives.

-To encourage and strengthen the international relationships among the youth to support the development of the MDK.

- To promote the longevity of the Moo Duk Kwan by supporting and empowering the leaders of tomorrow.

Pt. II - Proposals on the appointment of a YL and his tasks:

- Selected by their national federation (Designee), appointed by World Moo Duk Kwan.

- Set a length of time for their appointment as Youth Leader: 2 years ; can be renewed. (voted, unanimously passed)

- What age: 18-35 years old (YL discussion : No disagreement, apart from stating if no one matched requirement an older representative would be acceptable).

-Rank: at least 10 years of practice (Ee dan) and above. YL should be if possible an instructor or assistant instructor ( Jo Kyo, Kyo Sa, Sa Bom).

At the National Level

After being appointed by both their federation (Designee) and WMDK, the YL will have to set 2 main actions (projects) to achieve during their service; one at must be focused on the of the youth of their country. The youth leader will have to make a brief assessment of their progress to their national federation. This will assessment will be completed after 12 months and again at the completion of their 2 year appointment. WMDK will be informed by the national federation on the youth leaders progress.

The youth leader can choose to appoint a youth leader assistant to help with the project, but they will still complete the bulk of the work themselves.

At the international level:

- Work with international youth leaders on projects, for example the video project being undertaken by 2016 group.

- One YL symposium per year (or every 2 years), if possible at the same time than the WMDK symposium to create inter-actions with elders. Every 2 years in Korea.

-If possible, the YL symposium should include a promotion event for Soo Bahk Do.

Pt. III Youth Leadership Symposium 2016 – Project Proposal.

“Moo Duk Kwan Around The World”

We the youth leaders are proposing to create a video of the youth leaders performing either a hyung or gi cho in their own countries and to combine them.

The idea came from the discussions around the strong identity of Moo Duk Kwan and how the youth leaders can promote it, within their cities, nationally & internationally both inside and out of the Moo Duk Kwan.

We discussed about the prevalence of social media and new technologies such as Youtube / Facebook and the outreach a “viral” video can have, and from there the suggestion of a video created by the Youth Leaders came up.

The proposed video is:

“Moo Duk Kwan Around The World”

Youth leaders either by themselves or with other youth members performing Du Moon hyung or some ki cho motions.

The video will be filmed at an iconic location to represent the country.

To keep a consistent standard the videos should be filmed in the highest quality on either an iPhone/Samsung phone or on Go Pro or other high quality device.

Action Items:

Material

Locating suitable youth to take part in the video, Everyone is responsible for this task

Completing the video for each country – The Youth Leader representative for each country will take responsibility to have the filmed and sent before required completion date.

Editing the final video, Jaime Ambriz (Mexico) has volunteered to take on this task

Timeline:

In discussions it was mentioned that it would be good to have the video completed and posted by the 9th of November to coincide with the founders birthday & the birthday of Moo Duk Kwan.

To be able to complete the video in this time from the following deadlines need to be met.

Complete filming and send material to Ambriz KSN - 29th of October

Edit, allow for review by other Youth Leaders and re-edit if necessary - 3rd November

Completion date 9th November.

Discussion regarding the video continued and it was proposed that we repeat this process to complete a new video every 3-6 months of varying content but all with the goal of promoting the strong identity of the Moo Duk Kwan.

Pt. IV Conclusion & Next steps.

For a group of 19 people from 11 countries speaking 7 different languages, this week has been challenging and at the same time very rewarding for all involved.

While overcoming the language and culture barriers we have created a bond of camradrie that we hope will continue on for many years to come.

This bond was formed from a shared passion for training and continuing the art we have all practiced for many years, and it upholding its values.

To aid us to continue the connection between us we have set ourselves the following tasks to work on over the coming months.

Video Project :

We have assigned coordinators to oversee the completion of our video project to ensure that we can meet the deadline we have proposed to ourselves of the 9th of November.

All youth leaders are aware of their required actions and next steps to see that this project is as sucessful as we all know it can be.

Mission statement :

Youth Leaders will strive to uphold the mission statement set out in this document and where necessary update and revise the statement so that it best reflects the actions and philosophies of the Youth Leadership Program.

Continue to build and strengthen Oneness:

We feel it is important that we treat this Youth Symposium as only the beginning and that we continue to build on the relationships and oneness that has developed over the course of the past week.

To Kwan Jang Nim, the 2016 youth leaders would like to express our gratitude for both the opportunity to take part in this historic event for the Moo Duk Kwan, but also for the guidance and leadership you have provided to us in the past, over the course of this week, and in the future.
