950-1 In 1952 Kazan testified before the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) naming sympathizers, in order to continue working at 20th Century Fox. As a consequence, some of his associates, including Arthur Miller, turned against him. After Kazan testified, Miller wrote The crucible, a thinly disguised allegory of the recent Communist witch hunts that strongly condemned informing. On the waterfront is allegedly Kazan's response to Arthur Miller's play, since the film glorifies its hero's decision to testify against his former friends and union comrades. Inspired by a series of Pulitzer-Prize winning newspaper articles by Malcolm Johnson, Budd Shulberg's poetic yet brutally realistic screenplay is brilliantly interpreted by Marlon Brando. ..., cont.
950-2 Cont.: ... Brando plays Terry Malloy, an uneducated, inarticulate, confused ex-boxer and dockworker, who finds a way through his confusion with the help of his girlfriend and a tough, no-nonsense priest, and turns the tables on the head mobster and his men who control the New York City docks.

Molly shoos the crowd from the room, pretending it was a gag for the statue to be missing. Venus tells Eddie not to worry about his job, as she has powers; he tells her she'll freeze out on the balcony. Eddie re-enacts the statue's coming to life, and Molly says anyone can tell he's not a thief. Missing sequences on r2: Eddie flees with Venus down a fire escape, and Gloria throws a tantrum. Eddie tries to hypnotize Venus into falling asleep, but instead becomes sleepy himself.

950-1 "A smash hit on Broadway, One touch of Venus boasted an amazing array of talent: book by Ogden Nash and S.J. Perelman, music by Kurt Weill, lyrics by Nash, staging by Elia Kazan, choreography by Agnes de Mille, and Mary Martin as Venus (Weill had initially wanted Marlene Dietrich for the role). Yet from the play's October 1943 opening to the beginning of production of the film, the material underwent a near complete transformation. Soon after the play opened, Mary Pickford purchased the rights for 150,000 dollars down and a percentage of the film profits. The musical would be shot in Technicolor, and the casting of Venus' 12 handmaidens would require a 'nationwide beauty search.' Pickford wanted de Mille to restage her ballets for the film, and contracted with Weill, who worked with Ann Ronell on additional material, to provide the score. Then the problems began. Originally signed to write and direct, Gregory LaCava sued Pickford in March 1945 for over a million and a half dollars ..., cont.
951-1 Preserved by UCLA Film and Television Archive in cooperation with Republic Pictures. Funding provided by the AFI/NEA Film Preservation Grants Program. Laboratory services by Film Technology Company, Inc. Preserved from 35 mm. nitrate fine grain master positive materials.
950-2 Cont.: ... for breach of contract. The project languished for two years, but was renewed when Pickford and producer Lester Cowan decided to make One touch of Venus the first film for their new company, Artists Alliance. They brought in Harry Kurnitz to write a steamlined, non-musical screenplay, and notions of Technicolor and dance numbers were jettisoned. Pickford's role gradually decreased, and her name does not appear in the credits. By the time the film was ready for production, Martin's pregnancy prevented her from repeating her role. All but five of Weill and Nash's 16 songs were dropped, and to avoid potential censorship problems, ann Ronell cleaned up the lyrics of the remaining songs. Though critics have long decried the wholesale changes made to the play, the film remains a charming bit of whimsical romantic fantasy. Some clever musical moments remain. Director Seiter crosscuts between Ava Gardner (dubbed by Eileen Wilson) and Dick Haymes singing a duet-- ..., cont.
950-3 Cont.: ... but they are with different partners on different sets. A showcase for the beauty and newly discovered comedic talents of Gardner, the film, said Variety 'clinches {her} claim to a top spot in the cinema firmament.' And though the film's songs have been sanitized, her flimsy costumes and unabashed sensuality are quite surprising for the time. Robert Walker ably plays the bumbling department store clerk who brings Venus to life, and Eve Arden serves up one of her patented love-starved wisecrackers"--Program notes by Ed Carter. Shown at the 8th Annual Festival of Preservation on July 11, 1996.
