Required Text & Materials:

1. College Physics, OpenStax. Note that this is a free Open Education Resource.

2. Scientific Calculator (Not a graphing calculator)

Course Objectives: You are expected to gain a thorough understanding of the material. This means that a memorization approach to physics will not work, you will be expected to use your knowledge and skills to solve new problems. You will also become versed in discussing and solving physics problems in groups. In addition, I hope you come away from the class with an appreciation of physics and the inclination to question the world around you.

Course Content: Chapters 11-15+18-23 in College Physics (Not in that order).

Course Grade: Your final grade will be based on the total number of points you receive for the following:

Item Points

Laboratory 200

Exams/Quizzes 400*

Final Exam 400

* We will have three exams worth 100 points each. In addition, there will be daily homework quizzes that will be scaled to 100 points for the quarter. There are NO make-ups. I reserve the right to have group midterms. There may be opportunities for extra credit, however, extra credit cannot be used to change a D or an F to a higher grade. You must take the final to pass the class. The final is in our lecture room at 1-3 on Tuesday, March 28, 2017.

IMPORTANT – To pass the class you need to pass the lab. 60% is considered passing for the lab.

I may adjust the curve based on the class results. However, I strive for:

A = 87.5-100% C = 75-65% F ................
