Mount Saint Mary College Academic Mission
As reflected in its motto “Doce Me Veritatem” (Teach Me the Truth) Mount Saint Mary College, founded by the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, is an independent, coeducational institution committed to providing students with a liberal arts education to prepare them for lives of leadership and service. Through a variety of majors and professional programs, students are also prepared for career entry or graduate and professional studies.
Consistent with Judeo-Christian values and the Dominican tradition of education that values the inherent worth of the individual, the mission of Mount Saint Mary College is to create an environment which fosters close student-faculty interaction that enables students to reach their full potential as lifelong learners. Mount Saint Mary College strives to provide a stimulating environment that promotes the intellectual and personal growth of undergraduate and graduate students.
Athletics Department Mission Statement:
The Department of Athletics and Recreation fulfills the Mount Saint Mary College mission by actively supporting the academic, physical and moral character development of Mount students. The Department recruits women and men who value their role as student first. Our effective recruiting and ongoing coaching and support ensures our student athletes and intramural participants are motivated towards self-improvement, develop strong leadership skills, respect and value personal and professional ethics, and embrace community service.
The Department of Athletics and Recreation aims to cultivate students’ physical and personal development, enrich academic learning and foster a sense of community on campus. The intercollegiate program complements the overall quality of the educational experience by encouraging teamwork, discipline, social interaction and competitive excellence within the context of the College’s mission. Our competitive Division III varsity athletic teams contribute to the quality of life on campus by providing recreational activities and serving as a source of institutional pride. Intramurals create an atmosphere that encourages individuals to develop a lifelong learning pattern of positive recreational activity.
All of our work is carried out under the auspices of the NCAA Division III guidelines and philosophy that reads, “Colleges and universities in Division III place highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on the successful completion of all students’ academic programs. They seek to establish and maintain an environment in which a student athlete’s athletics activities are conducted as an integral part of the student athlete’s educational experience. They also seek to establish and maintain an environment that values cultural diversity and gender equality among their student-athletes and athletics staff.” (Revised 1/10/95)

ETHICAL CONDUCT
Mount Saint Mary College upholds the NCAA's philosophy on unethical conduct and in no way supports or pro- motes such actions. Specifically, the College aims to satisfy the ideas outlined in NCAA Bylaw 10.1 on Unethical Conduct, which states:
Unethical conduct by a prospective or enrolled student-athlete or a current or former institutional staff member may include, but is not limited to, the following:
1. Refusal to furnish information relevant to an investigation of a possible violation of an NCAA regulation when requested to do so by the NCAA or the individual's institution;
2. Knowing involvement in arranging for fraudulent academic credit or false transcripts for a prospective or an enrolled student-athlete;
3. Knowing involvement in offering or providing a prospective or an enrolled student-athlete an improper inducement or extra benefit or improper financial aid;

5. Receipt of benefits by an institutional staff member for facilitating or arranging a meeting between a student-athlete and an agent, financial advisor or a representative of an agent or advisor (e.g., 'runner').
SPORTSMANSHIP
Mount Saint Mary College students and spectators should abide by the following guidelines when attending Mount athletic events on or off campus. In addition, student-athletes are urged to remind their families, friends, and others who attend athletic events of the following rules and regulations:
1. Cheer for your team in a positive manner, not against your opponent;
2. Do not use abusive remarks, obscene gestures or profane language towards officials, participants or spectators;
3. All signs and banners should be of a positive nature;
4. Spectators (including parents) are not allowed in the playing area at any time during a scheduled contest;
5. Display good sportsmanship at all times; and
6. Under NCAA rules, all artificial noisemakers are
prohibited.
ACADEMIC POLICY
Under NCAA rules, all student-athletes must make satisfactory progress toward a baccalaureate degree. This is defined as being a full-time student maintaining a mini- mum course load of 12 undergraduate credits per semester in order to be eligible. Graduate students with remaining athletic eligibility must have a minimum course load of 9 graduate credits to be eligible. Additionally, each student- athlete must remain in good academic standing as set forth by the standards of the College (see below).
To ensure compliance with NCAA eligibility regulations and the 12-credit minimum, registration holds have been placed on all student-athletes during the semester of com- petition. A signature from the athletic department is required to make a change to your academic schedule.
All students with 30 or fewer credits must attain a mini- mum Cumulative GPA of 1.85 in each semester to remain in good academic standing. All other students must maintain a minimum Cumulative GPA of 2.0 to be in good academic standing. Additionally, failure to achieve a minimum Semester GPA of 1.75 will result in a student being placed on academic probation. The requirements are listed in the table below.
|Cumulative GPA Requirements |
|Credits |Good |Monitored |Probation |Dismissal |
| |Standing | | | |
|0-15 |1.85 |1.75-1.84 |1.00-1.74 |0.00-0.99 |
|16-30 |1.85 |1.75-1.84 |1.50-1.74 |0.00-1.49 |
|31-60 |2.00 |1.86-1.99 |1.65-1.85 |0.00-1.64 |
|61+ |2.00 |1.94-1.99 |1.80-1.93 |0.00-1.79 |
The Academic Standards Committee meets twice a year, January and May, to determine the academic status of all students. Academic status can change only after a student has completed 12 credits (one full semester) of course- work. Any student may appeal their academic status by submitting a letter to the Chairperson of the Academic Standards Committee. Only after the Committee has deter- mined to change the academic standing will a student-athlete be eligible to participate in competitions. Complete information on the College's academic standing policy is found in the college catalog.
No student-athlete may participate in intercollegiate athletic competition while on academic probation. Student-athletes on first academic probation may participate in practices provided they participate in a supervised study pro-gram approved by the director of athletics and the NCAA Faculty Representative.
For matters regarding Mount Saint Mary College academic policies, please contact Scott Russell, the NCAA Faculty Representative. For matters regarding NCAA eligibility, please contact Eric Seideman, Director of Compliance.
ALCOHOL & DRUG POLICY
Mount Saint Mary College prohibits the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol by student-athletes and employees on our property or as any part of our institutional activities. The Mount Saint Mary College Department of Athletics stresses that all student- athletes are to abide by these federal laws as well as the rules and regulations documented in the official Student Handbook as issued by the College. Disciplinary action may result from violations of these policies and procedures.
Any student-athlete found to be in the use of or presence of an NCAA banned substance or illegal drug, as outlined by the NCAA, faces an immediate two-game suspension within their playing season. If the offense occurs at the end of a playing season or during the off-season, the suspension will carry over to the following season. A second offense by the same individual results in a 365-day suspension (from the date of the second offense) from all inter- collegiate athletic activities. A third offense results in the loss of all remaining eligibility in all sports at Mount Saint Mary College.
Please recognize that the actions taken by the Mount Saint Mary College Department of Athletics are separate from any actions that may be taken by the NCAA or other college departments and officials.
Regarding illegal substances, the NCAA has issued the following warning: "All nutritional/dietary supplements carry some risk of containing an NCAA banned substance because they are not well regulated and may be contaminated. Failure to check out any supplement with your sports medicine staff prior to use may result in a failed appeal for a positive drug test. Student-athletes are responsible for anything they ingest."
Nutritional and Dietary Supplement Product Policy
Before consuming any nutritional/dietary supplement product, student-athletes are required to review the product and its label with members of the athletic department staff. Dietary supplements are not well regulated and may cause positive drug test results. Any product containing a dietary supplement ingredient is taken at your own risk. The following drug classes are banned by the NCAA:
1. Stimulants
2. Anabolic Agents
3. Alcohol and Beta Blockers (banned for rifle only)
4. Diuretics and Other Masking Agents
5. Street Drugs
6. Peptide Hormones and Analogues
7. Anti-estrogens
8. Beta-2 Agonists
The institution and the student-athlete shall be held accountable for all drugs within the banned drug class regardless of whether they have been specifically identified.
SOCIAL NETWORKING
Online communities (e.g Facebook and Twitter) provide social networking opportunities that enable people to share information and converse with others. They are places where you can promote yourself and meet people. However, student-athletes must be aware that these sites
are in the public domain where just about anyone can view anything you post. What you disclose on these sites is for all the public to see and judge. The information you dis- play is a reflection of you, your team, and the Athletic Department. Because the Athletic Department and Mount Saint Mary College have a vested interest in their reputation, an athlete may be required to remove a posting deemed inappropriate by the athletic director, coach, or staff member. Participation in an online community will be subject to the scrutiny of others and should you violate the student-athlete code of conduct, disciplinary action may be pursued.
When deciding to join an online community, keep in mind the dangers such communities present. Remember:
- Online communities (Social networking sites) create a false sense of security with the availability of privacy set- tings - make sure your privacy settings are set appropriately
- Detailed information (phone numbers, addresses, class schedules, social plans) about you is available to just about anyone - don't post private information to such sites
- Compromising and inappropriate pictures, statements, or other information can hurt your chances to gain employment - employers do monitor social networking sites
- Evaluate and monitor your account on a regular basis - How do you feel about a potential employer seeing what you have posted? What about your parents or grandparents?
GAMBLING
Illegal gambling is a crime. It is a federal offense to influence in any way a sporting contest by bribery. Further, it is a federal offense to use interstate facilities including the telephone, internet, or mail to place illegal bets. NCAA bylaw 10.3 states:
The following individuals shall not knowingly participate
in sports wagering activities or provide information to individuals involved in or associated with any type of sports wagering activities concerning intercollegiate, amateur or professional athletics competition: (Adopted: 4/26/07 effective 8/1/07)
1. Staff members of an institution's athletics department;
2. Nonathletics department staff members who have responsibilities within or over the athletics department (e.g., chancellor or president, faculty athletics representative, individual to whom athletics reports);
3. Staff members of a conference office; and
4. Student-athletes.
The prohibition against sports wagering applies to any institutional practice or any competition (intercollegiate, amateur or professional) in a sport in which the Association conducts championship competition, in bowl subdivision football and in emerging sports for women.
The provisions of Bylaw 10.3 are not applicable to traditional wagers between institutions (e.g., traditional rivalry) or in conjunction with particular contests (e.g., bowl games). Items wagered must be representative of the involved institutions or the states in which they are located. (Adopted: 4/26/07 effective 8/1/07)
The following sanctions for violations of Bylaw 10.3 shall apply: (Adopted: 4/27/00 effective 8/1/00, Revised: 4/26/07 effective 8/1/07)
1. A student-athlete who engages in activities designed to influence the outcome of an intercollegiate contest or in an effort to affect win-loss margins ("point shaving") or who participates in any sports wagering activity involving the student-athlete's institution shall permanently lose all remaining regular-season and postseason eligibility in all sports. (Revised: 4/26/07 effective 8/1/07)
2. A student-athlete who participates in any sports wagering activity through the Internet, a bookmaker or a parlay card shall be ineligible for all regular-season and postseason competition for a minimum period of one year from the date of the institution's determination that a violation occurred and shall be charged with the loss of a minimum of one season of eligibility. If the student-athlete is determined to have been involved in a later violation of any portion of Bylaw 10.3, the student-athlete shall permanently lose all remaining regular-season and postseason eligibility in all sports. (Revised: 4/26/07 effective 8/1/07)
HAZING
Mount Saint Mary College has a zero tolerance policy for hazing and negative initiation events. Hazing is defined as any behavior that is physically, emotionally or psychologically abusive to an individual or selected group of individuals, for the purpose of gaining entrance or acceptance into an established group. An individual's consent to hazing or initiation is not a defense for the behavior. The College and the Department of Athletics will take all hazing matters seriously. Specific consequences may include, but are not limited to: suspensions, cancellation of games, and losses of eligibility.
SEXUAL HARASSMENT
Mount Saint Mary College prohibits sexual harassment in any form by any member of the community. Such conduct is defined by state and federal laws and may result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal or expulsion. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has issued guidelines under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Mount Saint Mary agrees with the intent of these guidelines, as effective relationships among faculty, staff, and students must be based upon mutual respect.
The Title IX Coordinator for Mount Saint Mary College is Michael O’Keefe. He can be contacted at 845-569-3597 or michael.okeefe@msmc.edu. In addition, the Mount Saint Mary College Sexual Misconduct Policy is located on msmc.edu under Student Life or at under Inside Athletics.
DEPARTMENT FORMS
All student-athletes must complete NCAA and other required forms prior to practicing and/or participating in their first intercollegiate contest each year. The following forms (available on the website) must be completed:
1. NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Statement
2. NCAA Drug-Testing Consent Form
3. Self-release form
4. All additional forms required by Mount Saint Mary College including medical forms, insurance forms, sports information forms, etc.
Collection of all required forms will be coordinated by the Mount Saint Mary College Department of Athletics and Health Services personnel. All students are required to supply Health Services with proof of current immunizations and a completed physical to satisfy state health requirements and maintain good academic standing at the college. All student-athletes are required to complete a pre-participation physical examination performed by the Mount Health Services personnel. Failure to meet all of the above requirements will impact a student-athlete's ability to practice and compete in intercollegiate athletics at Mount Saint Mary College.
EQUIPMENT & UNIFORM POLICIES
Equipment and uniforms will be distributed to each team by appointment only. Appointments will be made by each team's head coach and a member of each team's coaching staff must be present when equipment and uniforms are distributed. If an athlete is unable to attend, the coach must notify the equipment manager and the student must schedule a personal appointment. Each athlete must sign an equipment/uniform contract, which holds him or her accountable for the equipment/uniform that has been issued.
The return of all equipment and uniforms will also be done as a team and a member of the coaching staff must be present. Student accounts will be charged for items that are not returned. Game uniforms will be laundered after each contest. The head coach will make arrangements with the equipment manager in to set up a washing schedule.
LOCKER ROOM POLICY
A number of Mount Saint Mary College athletic teams have the privilege of using a locker room during the sea- son. It should be made clear that this is indeed a privilege and behavior in the locker room should reflect this. Student-athletes should never be in their locker room when the facility is closed except for a scheduled practice or contest, nor should any non-team member ever be allowed in the locker room.
Locker room decorations and paraphernalia should always remain in good taste and must be completely removed when the locker room is vacated after the season. Any damages to the facility will be assessed to the team's fundraising account or to the individual(s) responsible for the damage.
Please note that abuse of any of these policies can result in expulsion of individual team members or an entire squad from a locker room.
RECRUITMENT HOST POLICIES
Student-athletes who serve as recruitment hosts are responsible for the health and well-being of all recruits for the duration of their visit to campus. All hosts and high school athletes visiting the campus are required to sign a contract that serves as a commitment to follow this policy. The coaches will distribute and ensure that the contract is completed for each recruiting visit.
A copy of your signed contract will be forwarded to
Security, Residential Life, and Admissions.
TEAM RULES
In addition to rules and regulations set forth by the NCAA, Mount Saint Mary College, and conference affiliations,
Mount Saint Mary College student-athletes are responsible for complying with team-specific rules as identified by their respective sport. Coaches reserve the right to adopt more stringent team rules related to curfew, conduct, etc., and these policies will be strictly enforced. Violations of these rules may result in disciplinary action.
TEAM TRAVEL
Student-athletes are expected to dress appropriately on team trips and to leave both bus and hotel rooms in good condition after use. Proper behavior and conduct is expected at all times. Family members or friends are not allowed to travel with the team.
Student-athletes are expected to travel to and from an away athletic contest with their team. Exceptions to this policy will be made for student-athletes traveling with family members only and must be approved by the athletic director. A detailed travel policy is submitted to each coach.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Community involvement is a part of the Athletic
Department's mission. All teams are expected to perform at least one community service project per year. Teams are strongly encouraged to complete projects in the greater Newburgh area.
STUDENT ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC)
In accordance with Article 6.1.4 of the NCAA Constitution, Mount Saint Mary College has established a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for its student-athletes. SAAC is comprised of representatives from every varsity sport. These individuals provide insight on the student-athlete experience and offer input on the rules, regulations, and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on campus. They also serve as a liaison between student-athletes, coaches, and athletic administrators on issues to improve the student-athlete experience and promote growth and education through sports participation. Athletes may be nominated for inclusion in SAAC by his/her coaches or by the athletic department staff. Interested student-athletes should speak to their coaches regarding inclusion.
STUDENT-ATHLETE ISSUES
Matters related to individual and team performance – such as playing time, position, or role on the team and traveling squad - are the province of the coaching staff. Those coaching decisions are final.
If you have an issue or complaint concerning your personal rights as a participant in intercollegiate athletics as impacted by team or Athletic Department rules, these options are available to you:
1. Discuss the matter with your team captain or your team's SAAC representative.
2. Discuss the matter with a member of the coaching staff.
3. Bring the matter to the attention of the Director of
Athletics.

All medical forms must be completed and returned to the Athletic Training Staff prior to the start of practice, tryouts or pre-season. Student-athletes will not be allowed to participate until the necessary forms are completed including questionnaires, authorization forms, insurance forms, and the institution's entrance physical. In order for a student-athlete to be eligible for athletic participation, he/she must complete the following information:
1. Entrance Physical Exam/Immunization Records
Before a pre-participation physical exam can be administered through Mount Saint Mary College, the student-athlete's private physician must perform a complete physical. In order for the physical to be valid, the form must state that the student is cleared to participate in intercollegiate athletics, be signed and dated by the physician, and include all necessary immunization records. The physical must have occurred no more than 12 months prior to the date of admission. Required immunizations include proof of two doses of measles, mumps, rubella vaccine; one dose of Tdap vaccine; and at least one dose of vaccine for meningitis. Though strongly recommended by Health Services and Athletics, the vaccines for meningitis and Tdap can both be waived. Please contact Health Services for waivers.
2. Medical History Questionnaire and Update
The Medical History Questionnaire allows the Athletic Training Staff to become familiar with the student-athlete's entire medical history. All questions should be answered to the best of the student's ability. If a student-athlete is currently under the care of a physician, the physician's name, address, and phone number should be listed. All current medications should also be listed. If there are unanswered questions, your forms will not be accepted.
3. Treatment Consent Form
The Treatment Consent Form states that the student-athlete consents to treatment of injury or illness by the Athletic training Staff, and or other qualified medical personnel.
4. Authorization/Consent for Release of Health Information
In accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Privacy Act (HIPAA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, this form gives authorization/consent for disclosure of protected health information between the athletic training staff and other health care professionals, as well as insurance companies, parents, coaches, for the treatment of athletic related injuries or illnesses and for the payment of claims.
5. Athletic Insurance Forms
It is extremely important that all insurance forms are accurately completed and on file in the Athletic Training Office prior to the start of the fall semester, to enable the staff to provide emergency treatment quickly and efficiently. Failure to do so will place the responsibility on the student-athlete.
6. Walk-On Candidates/Open Tryouts
In order for a student-athlete to be an eligible walk-on try- out candidate, he/she must have completed an entrance physical with his/her private physician, must show documentation of complete immunization history, and must complete all documentation described above. NOTE: Any walk-on candidate who has been under a physician's care for an injury in the past twelve (12) months, or has seen a physician for a medical illness in the past twelve (12) months, will be required to obtain a written clearance from the treating physician prior to participation. Should the student-athlete be added to the team roster, he/she must complete the remaining requirements for medical eligibility. Should an injury occur while trying out for the team, the institution will provide secondary insurance coverage, following all coverage from the student-athletes primary medical provider.
7. Pre-Participation Physical
In addition to the entrance physical, each student-athlete is required to complete a pre-participation physical within six months prior of competition. This physical is conducted through Mount Saint Mary College Health Services. Any student-athlete who has been under a physician's care for an injury in the past twelve (12) months, or has seen a physician for a medical illness in the past twelve (12) months, will be required to obtain a written clearance from the treating physician prior to obtaining clearance from Health Services.
8. Sickle Cell Trait Status
The NCAA mandates that all student-athletes have knowledge of their Sickle cell trait status. Requirements have been added to the pre-participation physical in which student-athletes must either
1. Provide proof of prior Sickle cell testing and return with physical forms.
2. Complete Sickle cell trait testing waiver form declining to be tested and return with physical forms.
If the student-athlete would like to be tested for sickle cell trait, please call health services or your primary care physician. Mount Saint Mary College can help you arrange for sickle cell testing through Omni Health care. It is the policy of Mount Saint Mary College that any student-athlete with a positive sickle cell trait be referred to a specialist for participation consideration.
IV. Rhabdomyolysis
Rhabdomyolysis (“Rhabdo”) occurs when muscle is damaged and a protein called myoglobin is released into the bloodstream. Myoglobin is then broken down into substances that can damage the kidneys. Rhabdomyolysis in athletes is most commonly caused by trauma, use of certain medications/drugs, severe exertion and/or severe dehydration.
Common symptoms of rhabdo include muscle weakness, stiffness, aching or tenderness; dark-colored urine; and decreased urinary output. If any of these symptoms occur, it is important to seek medical treatment right away to prevent damage to the kidneys.
Rhabdomyolysis can be prevented by making sure that you are in good physical condition prior to the start of the season (off-season conditioning is key), and by making sure that you are well-hydrated not only during the practice/game itself, but throughout the day.
V. General Policy: Injury/Illness
Medical care and facilities are available to all current student-athletes. Medical services will be provided for athletic-related injuries that occur during participation on a Mount Saint Mary College team. To ensure proper and immediate care, all injuries must be reported to the Athletic Training Staff within 24 hours. If a referral is deemed necessary, the student-athlete must follow the policy of his/her insurance plan, and complete and sign an insurance claim form. Mount Saint Mary College will provide secondary insurance coverage for sports related injuries.
VI. Authorization for Services
A certified athletic trainer (ATC) will evaluate and document all athletic injuries. Based on the evaluation, the ATC will determine the appropriate treatment and rehabilitation programs for all athletic injuries, including referral to appropriate medical professionals.
An appointment with the school physician, orthopedic, or other specialist may be made at the discretion of the Athletic Training Staff. The athletic training staff has a written directory of medical specialists and facilities. Student-athletes may also choose to make an appointment with their family physician provided that a member of the athletic training staff is informed; however, student-athletes are highly encouraged to be seen by a school physician. The student-athlete is required to obtain a written clearance from the treating physician prior to returning to athletics.
A student-athlete with symptoms related to an illness will be screened and scheduled an appointment with Health Services. A student-athlete can make their own appointment directly through Health Services. Both the student-athlete and Health Services must inform the athletic training staff of the visit and any restrictions related to athletic participation.
Any student-athlete who has been evaluated at an emergency room must have a follow-up appointment with the school physician or other medical specialist before returning to participation if deemed necessary by the athletic training staff.
In accordance with federal guidelines, parents, the Director of Athletics, and coaches will be notified as soon as possible if any student-athlete is admitted to the hospital and/or if surgery is necessary. Every attempt will be made to follow the student-athlete's primary insurance policy, but never at the expense of the care the student-athlete should receive.
Medication: At no time will staff certified athletic trainers dispense prescription medication. Staff certified athletic trainers may hold previously prescribed medications for individuals with whom they are working.
VII. Treatment and Rehabilitation
After an injury has been evaluated, the student-athlete will receive a treatment/rehabilitation program. Both programs work on an appointment schedule. It is the responsibility of the student-athlete to schedule treatment/rehabilitation time around his/her class time and practice schedule and to keep the appointment. Failure to show up for a treatment/rehabilitation appointment can result in a delay in recovery and return to play. Rehabilitation will only be conducted during practice if approved by the coach and ATC. The student-athlete is required to continue his/her treatment/rehabilitation until a member of the athletic training staff approves completion of the program.
VIII. Athletic Training Rules
1. Student-athletes must be dressed appropriately (t-shirt, shorts, etc.). Practice shoes are not to be worn in the training room.
