Figure-01:- VoIP Network using Cisco routers
Procedure:-
1. Connect the equipments as shown in the Figure-01, that is, connect the analog telephones to the FXS ports of the gate-way routers and directly connect both gate-way routers by using its fast Ethernet ports and appropriate cable.
a. What types of cables, you can use to connect the two gate-way router in this Lab?
2. Connect the PC to the console port of the each Gate-way router and get the console access of the router in your PCs.
3. Make the end to end connectivity between two Gate-way routers using your last year routing knowledge ( You can choose any Class A, B or C private IP addresses for this Lab)
What is the private IP address range in Class A?----------------------------------
What is the private IP address range in Class B?----------------------------------
What is the private IP address range in Class C?----------------------------------
Write down the commands that you used to make connectivity between two gate-way routers?
Gate-way Router 01
Gate-way Router 02
How did you make sure the connectivity between two Gate-way routers?
4. Configure the VoIP setup between two end Gate-way routers as follows
Gate-way Router 01
Router1(Config)#dial-peer voice 1 pots
Router1(Config-dial peer)#destination-pattern 2221
Router1(Config-dial peer)#Port 0/1/0
Router1(Config-dial peer)#exit
Router1(Config)# dial-peer voice 2 pots
Router1(Config-dial peer)#destination-pattern 2222
Router1(Config-dial peer)#Port 0/1/1
Router1(Config-dial peer)#exit
Router1(Config)# dial-peer voice 3 voip
Router1(Config-dial peer)#destination-pattern 333.
Router1(Config-dial peer)#session-target ipv4: ip address of GW-02 router
Router1(Config-dial peer)#end
Router1# write mem
Gate-way Router 02
Router2(Config)#dial-peer voice 1 pots
Router2(Config-dial peer)#destination-pattern 3331
Router2(Config-dial peer)#Port 0/1/0
Router2(Config-dial peer)#exit
Router2(Config)# dial-peer voice 2 pots
Router2(Config-dial peer)#destination-pattern 3332
Router2(Config-dial peer)#Port 0/1/1
Router2(Config-dial peer)#exit
Router2(Config)# dial-peer voice 3 voip
Router2(Config-dial peer)#destination-pattern 222.
Router2(Config-dial peer)#session-target ipv4: ip address of GW-01 router
Router2(Config-dial peer)#end
Router2# write mem
5. Now, verify your configuration by making calls between two Offices. If you are not success, troubleshoot the problems and make it work.
6. Now, Select the different CODEC values for each voice gate-ways and make the calls between two office and find out the best CODEC value for this lab scenario?
You can use the following cisco commands to change the codec values
Router (config)#dial -peer voice 3 voip
Router (config-dial-peer)# codec g711alaw
7. What is the function of the CODEC in this VoIP network?
8. If you have to connect many telephones from both offices to above VoIP network, what is the device you will use between telephones and Voice gate-way router in each office? Redraw a VoIP network diagram(Figure-01) with the new device introduced.(Label the port types in each devices)
9. Port mirroring is used in this VoIP network to capture the network packets between two office voice gate-way routers.
[pic]Figure-02
Disconnect the connection between two voice gate-way routers and connect the port mirroring configured Cisco 2950 switch between two voice gate-way routers using suitable type of cables and also connect one PC (with Ethereal installed PC) to the switch as shown in Figure-02. Assign the suitable IP address to the PC.
10. Start the Ethereal and make calls between two offices and do some conversation and terminate the calls.
11. Stop the packet capturing on ethereal and analyse the different type of captured packets.
12. List down and explain about each VoIP related packets that you captured.

13. Configure the office-B as 3331 hunt group and test your configuration.
(Find the configuration Cisco commands using the internet)
Router2(Config)#dial-peer voice 1 pots
Router2(Config-dial peer)#Port 0/1/0
Router2(Config-dial peer)#preference 0
Router2(Config-dial peer)#exit
Router2(Config)#dial-peer voice 2 pots
Router2(Config-dial peer)#destination-pattern 3331
Router2(Config-dial peer)#Port 0/1/0
Router2(Config-dial peer)# preference 0
Router2(Config-dial peer)#exit
Now, check your configuration by making calls from office-A to hunting number 3331 in office-B.
14. Remove the hunting group configuration from gate-way-02 router and configure for one way PLAR (private line automatic ring down) functionality between two offices and test your configuration. (make the PLAR between 2221 and 3331)
Router1(Config)#voice-port 0/1/0
Router1(Config-voiceport)#connection plar 3331
Router1(Config-voiceport)#exit
Router1(Config)#dial-peer voice 1 pots
Router1(Config-dial-peer)#port 0/1/0
Router2(Config)#voice-port 0/1/1
Router2(Config-voiceport)#connection plar 2221
Router2(Config-voiceport)#exit
Router2(Config)#dial-peer voice 1 pots
Router2(Config-dial-peer)#port 0/1/0
15. Test the following Cisco command to monitor the VoIP Cisco network and explain what you can monitor using each commands
a) show call active voice
b) show dial-peer voice
c) show voice port
d) show voice dsp
e) show voice port summary
f) show dial-peer voice summary
g) show voice call status
