Group Organiser's Letter

I hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year. Many of you started your Christmas celebrations by joining us at Clandon Golf Club for lunch. Megan organised the lunch and her report of the event can be found inside.

Lots of exciting things have been happening and we have some lovely events lined up for the coming spring and summer. West Sussex Group have been in touch and we will be letting you know what they are doing and may be sharing some outings.

Our events this year start in May with the AGM. We are having a delicious lunch first followed by the AGM and then Charlotte Hunter is speaking about a healthy diet for coeliacs.

Unfortunately we will no longer be having a Bundy/white elephant stall as the committee member who ran it has retired. We are very sorry about this but as the committee is much smaller in size we are unable to do so many things. However, we are still running the raffle and cake stall. We are very grateful for the home-made cakes, jams and chutney you give us for the stall. It is always lovely to try something that someone in the group has made.

Inside we have details of all the events we have planned for the year. I have also included a survey to find out what you would like us to do and where you would like us to meet. Please fill it in because this is your group and you matter to us. There will be copies at the meeting as well.

I am delighted to say my son will be doing the 10k run this year for Coeliac UK and there will be sponsorship forms available at the meeting and a chance to meet him.

As always we are searching for more committee members. Coeliac UK recommend that a committee of 10 – 12 is an ideal number. At present there are only six committee members.

New Members' Coffee Morning

This is a new venture for us. Mark and Janet ran an evening event last year which was very successful. A lot of people asked if we could meet during the day, so we have arranged a coffee morning in April at Morrisons in Reigate. Some of you, I hope, will have been to the coffee morning in Gomshall in March, which was a great success. Although it is advertised for new members, I hope that any of you who are in Reigate will support this event. It is an occasion for us to meet and get to know each other and swap advice and tips.

What we've been doing

Hog Roast, August

On Saturday 15 August about 60 members, family and friends gathered for a hog roast at the home of Maria and John Bird. Vicky and Mike Westhorpe had been busy since early morning setting up the spit roast and cooking the hog.

The weather was lovely and sunny after rain on the previous days. The hog was perfectly cooked with superb crackling. Bread rolls were supplied by Glutafin and Genius, and there was a variety of delicious salads to accompany the meal. Helen Searle had provided a good selection of desserts.

A number of people had brought along games and there was ample space for children to run around and play. John organised a walk with a quiz for anyone who wished to join in, or people could relax and chat in the sunshine.

All in all it was a lovely relaxing afternoon. Our thanks go to everyone who helped in some way. Mike Harrison

Group Meeting 19 September 2015 Rudgwick Hall

We had a lovely sunny day for our meeting, with about 60 people attending. Vicky had made some pretty labels for our members and took a turn on the door greeting people as they came in, while Mark acted as MC to keep everything flowing.

First, Helen gave us a brief update on gluten-free food at the RSCH and informed us that a further meeting has been arranged which she will attend with Megan. Then, Sameena from The Art of Curry gave a brilliant talk with plenty of tips on curry making. She demonstrated her methods and provided delicious samples for us to taste. She was a very interesting and approachable person and was kind enough to donate a couple of raffle prizes to add to our existing stock of lovely things. Mike (who kindly took over the raffle as Lesley was unable to to be with us) found that we raised a gratifying profit of £125.06 in all.

We finished the day with tea and some lovely cakes made by Helen. We all went home with a few goodies from Shär. My overall impression was that we had a very pleasant and successful day, thanks to you. We were especially grateful for all the home-made cakes that filled our cake stall. Christine Hyatt

Christmas Lunch, 2015

This was another very happy event for our members and their friends. Seventy-three people gathered at Clandon Regis Golf Club for our Christmas Lunch on Saturday 5 December. We had already faced the hard task of choosing our meals from a varied menu, so on arrival at the Golf Club an excited group met in the bar to renew friendships, meet new people and exchange news, before being invited into the dining room. Here Helen and I helped folk find their allocated tables (which were named for Santa’s reindeer) and each table was hosted by current or past committee members.Everywhere was beautifully decorated for Christmas, and after introductions to our companions, folk were soon busy pulling crackers, and playing with the poppers, balloons etc. which were found in a gold box at each place. We all enjoyed a leisurely and delicious lunch followed by coffee and mints, knowing that everything was gluten free. No wonder that this is one of our favourite places!

We had the opportunity to thank the staff, both back and front of house, led very ably by Chef and the functions manager, Jenny, for another very happy and successful Christmas lunch, before returning to our homes. Once again a great start to the Christmas season! Megan Swayne

AGM

We are very fortunate that all the committee members are willing to stand again. Please see their names below. In the age of the internet there is plenty of information on eating gluten-free and now many more restaurants that will cater for a gluten free diet. The main reason for this is the tireless work done by Coeliac UK and the local groups. However, taking a large party to a restaurant will guarantee a larger selection of menu items which you know are safe without having to keep checking with the waiting staff. We can only organise events like this with your help. Our committee puts in lots of time and effort because there are so few of us. So please think of joining our team to have a good time and help promote gluten free. If you are not a committee type, maybe you have an interest that might help us. Any kind of help you can provide would be very much appreciated. I know there are some members who help at the meetings and we are all very grateful as we couldn't run our meetings without you.

Our Summer Events

Children 16 and Under. You may remember from our last newsletter that Megan Swayne talked to the Inner Wheel last year and they gave us a donation. We are hoping to arrange an afternoon's bowling and a meal at The Spectrum in Guildford in the autumn for which there will be a small charge. However, for any other summer events if you want to bring your children along, coeliac, or not, there will be no charge for them. Please contact Vicky Westhorpe as soon as possible as the response so far has been poor and if we do not get enough people we will not be able to carry on.

Saturday 16 April, New Members' coffee morning Morrisons, Bell Street, Reigate RH2 7BA 10 -12. Some of you may have attended one of these events already but are very welcome to attend this one too. Morrisons are donating the coffee and will have their gluten free cakes available to buy. We will be there to answer any questions you have as long as they are not medical.

Saturday 21 May, AGM Rudwick Hall,Guildford Road, Bucks Green, Rudgwick RH12 3JJ 12.30pm Lunch or 2pm for the AGM. We would like as many of you as possible to join us for lunch beforehand. To encourage our members with children to come we are not charging for meals for any child of 16 or under. We are serving jacket potatoes with a choice of filling, coleslaw and salad, followed by some lovely puddings. Once our AGM is over, a nutritionist, Charlotte Hunter BSc, is to speak to us about nutritious and interesting gluten free meals.. This promises to be a very entertaining and informative talk.

We will also have some goodies for you to take home and our usual raffle and cake stall for you to take advantage of.

Please let us know you are coming by filling in the reply slip at the back of this newsletter and sending it back as soon as possible.

Thursday 23 June, Chinese Meal, The Royal China, almost opposite Waitrose in Banstead.

Once again we are returning to the Royal China, where we have always enjoyed the treat of a gluten- free Chinese meal. This year the meal is booked for Thursday 23 June at 7.30pm. As usual there will be a mixed platter of starters, crispy duck or similar and a number of main course dishes. A similar vegetarian option is available but please indicate if you require a vegetarian meal. The price is held again at £24.20 which includes a 10% service charge. Drinks to be purchased on the day.

Saturday 9 July, Walk and Afternoon Tea, Tillings, Station Road, Guildford GU5 9NP

John Jones has arranged a two and a half mile walk for us. We meet at Shere Recreation Ground, Upper Street, Shere, Guildford, Surrey, GU5 9HE at 1.15pm It is an interesting route and there are two slight inclines, but no real hills. There are some lovely views and it incorporates a stroll through the picturesque village of Shere. There is only one stile. The walk starts at OS Explorer 145 grid ref 075479

People will need to drive a mile to Tillings after the walk. There is a small amount of parking there, or you can use Gomshall station yard, or there is another car park near Gomshall Mill which is in Goose Green approx 100m from Tillings. The walk will be followed by afternoon tea at Tillings at 3pm. Anyone who would just like tea can book for that alone. However, there is only space for 30 people and our walkers get priority.

Bill Hyatt-Steel is going to run the British 10K on 10 July to raise money for Coeliac UK to help more people with coeliac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis, (a skin condition caused by intolerance to gluten).

Bill says when my mum was diagnosed with coeliac disease, she was so pleased with the help and support she found at Coeliac UK and her local group that she wanted to raise money and increase the profile of the charity. I have been a runner for a few years now and she felt that if I ran the 10k it would raise awareness of the charity with my work colleagues, my running club and friends. I was delighted to do so because her diagnosis made such a difference to all our lives. She is no longer tired and ill.

She found that the local groups provided help and support and a chance to talk to other coeliacs, share tips and suggestions, share meals out knowing they were safe and hear talks about coeliac disease or ways of cooking with gluten-free food. Coeliac UK has enabled so many people to cope much better and live more fulfilling lives. Even in these days of the internet, it is good to be somewhere where you can ask questions and swap ideas.

My target is £200 so please do sponsor me if you can by visiting my JustGiving page . JustGiving sends your donation straight to Coeliac UK so it’s a quick and safe way to donate or text BJHS83 £2 to 7007

There will also be an opportunity to sponsor me at the AGM. I am coming along, so if you have any questions for me, please come and talk to me. Bill Hyatt-Steel

A World Cruise

Cameron and I set off on January 4 on Fred Olson's Boudicca for the first part of a world cruise. She had about 500 passengers and my food was specially prepared. I chose what I would like to eat for lunch and dinner from the menu the night before. I could have had Warburtons bread, muesli or porridge with breakfast and at tea time a selection of cakes and sandwiches.

Our first port of call was Porto, where it rained cats and dogs! This was the only rain we had in the four and a half weeks. We visited Madeira, Tenerife and two Cape Verde Islands. By this time the weather was hot and sunny.

We took six days to get to the Island of St. Helena, a British overseas territory. It is only ten by five miles but reaches up to over 2600 ft. We anchored offshore and took a small tender in heavy swell to land on the island. Keeping up with us was a pod of dolphins and a twenty-foot whale shark. Later we saw humpback whales. Most of the island is barren but the tops of the volcanic rock get some rainfall and we visited a farm with luscious vegetation where I was offered gluten-free biscuits and cheese. The population is about 4200 and they were very friendly, only seeing visiting ships two to four times a year.

Next stop Namibia and then we had three days in Cape Town. Beautiful weather, more than 30C and blue sky. We had afternoon tea at the Mount Nelson, the famous colonial hotel. They provided me with delicious gluten-free mini sandwiches, pastries and cakes with wine and pots of tea for less than £10.

Our cruise finished in Durban and we flew home, having had a very restful cruise with good company, food and weather and seeing interesting places and wild life. Helen Searle

Hospital visits

Helen has been working tirelessly to improve the catering for coelaics at the Royal Surrey County Hospital (RSCH) in Guildford.

Below is a precis of the advice Coeliac UK gives to coeliacs visiting hospital. Hopefully the new standards will help Helen to raise the status of gluten-free food at RSCH.

1 Staying in Hospital

If you have coeliac disease, it is important that you communicate your need for a gluten-free diet with hospital staff. Hospital catering is variable – some are excellent whilst others may find it more difficult to cater for you.

The good news is that new standards mean that from 2015 there are mandatory standards covering hospital food in England and Scotland.

Knowledge of the diet may vary amongst staff and they may not have a very good understanding of coeliac disease. Some hospitals highlight on the menu which meals are gluten-free, and some even have a separate gluten-free menu. You may also see some dishes on a menu labelled as ‘no gluten containing ingredients’ or ‘NGCI’. This means that the meal does not have any ingredients containing gluten and it has been made with care to avoid contamination with gluten. Ask to see a dietitian when you are first admitted to hospital, as it is often the dietitian who will order a meal for you.

Be aware that well meaning staff may get it wrong as they may not fully understand the gluten-free diet. For example, they may add croutons which contain gluten to soup that would otherwise be OK for you to eat.

If you are unsure if your meal is OK for you to eat, check with the ward housekeeper or a member of nursing staff.

To make sure that your stay goes smoothly, here are a few questions to ask beforehand:

do I need to see the hospital dietitian to make sure I can get meals and snacks that I can eat?

does the hospital have a gluten-free menu?

are gluten-free snacks available?

Take your Food and Drink Directory and your Coeliac UK Membership card with you, it has our Helpline number on it so if you or the staff are unsure about a food item, you can call us.

Places to Eat or Stay

Recommended by our Members

Please remember to phone first to check that your chosen place is still serving

gluten-free food as eateries change hands at an alarming rate.

We have a real mixture of eateries, places that will provide private dining, those that will cater for an event for you and places to stay.

The Compass Inn, Winsor Road, Winsor, Hampshire, SO40 2HE Tel 02380 812 237

Recommended by two of our members.

Found in the village of Winsor which is situated between Southampton and the New Forest National Park. The landlady is gluten intolerant and so decided that she would make it safe for all coeliacs to eat there. Megan Swayne

They have all the things you usually find on a pub menu and can't eat (fish and chips, pasta, pies, apple crumble etc). They have gluten-free beer (and also ordinary beer at the bar). I had beer battered fish and chips. The helpings are very generous too. All meals include a free pudding, but as we had a starter we really couldn't manage one! Highly recommended by Veronica Watts

1 Niche 100% Gluten Free Restaurant, 197-199 Rosebery Ave, London EC1R 4TJ 020 7837 5048.

2 Niche is a modern British gluten-free restaurant with an accessible menu that everyone can enjoy! Near Angel tube and next door to Sadler's Wells theatre.

A friend who visited was delighted with the choice and the fact she could eat anything on the menu.

Legend of Curry

A small pop-up curry house set up by Howard Denhart – the son of one of our members. His parents mentioned the venture to Vicky Westhorpe at the Christmas lunch. We visited his website – and discovered a list of events he would be attending, one of which was the Dorking Farmers Market on 13 February. We duly loaded the dogs into the car and off we went to Dorking. We found a decorated white tent full of gently simmering curry by simply following the enticing aromas. A helping of the very mild offering and a fairly spicy alternative (there were three on the go but we decided not to be greedy) went down very well and we would advise any curry lover to try them. All gluten free – Howard is a coeliac himself. Nick Hyatt-Steel

Surrey Spice

All my curries are freshly made and they are all gluten free. In fact people come for a supper club and they can eat all eighteen dishes without any problem: Tel no:-07876135096

Musgrove House, 63 Oving Road, Chichester, PO19 7EN

A very good, small, friendly B&B in Chichester which caters for coeliacs and has very good breakfasts. They have off-street parking and it is not far to walk to the city centre.

La Fish, Fish and Chip shop, 110 The Hornet, Chichester, PO19 7JR

They serve gluten-free fish and chips from 6-9pm on Weds-Sats and there is a room at the back of the shop so you can eat in and you can also have alcoholic drinks.

The Apple Cafe upstairs in Waterstones, 5 West Street,PO19 9HD (opposite Chichester Cathedral) has a good choice of gluten free on their menu, both for a light lunch (quiches and salad, soup and gluten-free bread) as well as cakes etc. Veronica Watts
