Rev. A 04Feb03

NOTE : These instructions apply only to IBM PC compatible systems using a Windows 95 / 98/XP OS.

Initial Local PC Setup

1. Set up system for ASU ethernet access or ASU PPP dial-in access. For dial-in, WINS server settings must be configured. See ASU computer support person for assistance or go to the IT Services Help Page () for step-by-step instructions.

2. Add Client for Microsoft Networks:

- Start( Settings( Control Panel( Network

- On Configuration tab: Add( Client( Client for Microsoft Networks ( OK

3. Reboot PC

4. Upon Windows startup, you will be prompted for a Microsoft Networking username and password. Username is ‘remote’. Contact Tom Colella for password. You will be prompted to confirm the password the first time you enter it. In the future, you will need only to enter the username and password once.

NOTE: Local-to-remote PC communication requires the client PC to be logged on with the proper ID/password combination and the host to be on with OS running. If you have trouble connecting, it is likely that one of these conditions is not fulfilled. First, check your PC, then contact Tom Colella to confirm host is working properly.

Connecting To Remote (GEL_Main) PC For Data Access

NOTE: Data files are automatically synchronized between instrument PC’s and the GEL_Main PC each time a run log is completed. If you have not completed a log, the data files will not be available for remote access nor will your data be backed up.

1. From Windows desktop:

Start( Find( Computer

2. Enter “GEL_Main”

3. When computer is found, double click on PC icon.

4. Open data folder.

5. Browse folder for data. Files can be copied to local PC but can not be moved or deleted from GEL_Main. Files can not be copied or moved from local PC to GEL_Main without special permission.

6. If file is not found on instrument GEL_Main It might have been archived on CD-ROM. These are available to use within the lab to access old data files. See Tom if you wish to use one.

Downloading Instrument Software

Instrument software can be downloaded from the GEL_Main PC and installed on a local PC. This allows users to view and process data on an off-site PC in the instrument operating software environment.

1. Go to \\GEL_Main\software\(name of instrument).

2. Copy folder(s) containing desired installation files to desktop.

3. Find setup file (will be in Disk 1 folder if multiple disks) and execute to begin installation. When multiple disks are used, it might be necessary to re-direct installation program to path (desktop, etc.) where next disk is located. If this still does not work, try copying files from each folder to separate floppy disks and install from floppy drive. In this case, do not copy folder, only the files within.
