Swat Game - Western Illinois University

Percent of a Number Swat Game

Grade Level: Middle school to high school

Overview: This is a review game in which the teacher reads questions and students use a fly swatter to swat the answer on the screen (or wall).

Purpose/Objective: This is a fun activity for reviewing how to find percent of a number mentally. There us usually only one non-zero digit in each factor.

Resource/Materials:

➢ Two (2) fly swatters,

➢ List of questions (below, with a list of the answers (“key”), Optional: index cards, if you wish to write the questions on the index cards.

➢ A way to put the answers on a screen or wall. Options include:

o Overhead transparency and project on the screen.

o Write answers on the board.

o Write answers on index cards and tape them to the wall or board.

Activities and Procedures:

1. Divide the class into two teams.

2. One student from each team approaches and faces the board. Each student picks up a fly swatter. The students may use a piece of scratch paper to write down the question.

3. The teacher calls out a question and the first student to successfully locate and SWAT the matching answer wins a point for their team. The student may only swat one answer (they can’t change their mind). If the first student swats (answers) incorrectly, the other student can still swat the correct answer.

4. These two students sit down and the next two students approach the screen/board. Continue to play the game, while keeping score until all questions have been called out or time runs out. Total the points for each team. Announce the winning team.
